View Full Version : My Odyssey 2 - 1978-2007 (R.I.P.)

The first video game console I ever recieved back in 1978 finally bit the dust last night. There's a metal strip sticking out of my cartridge slot, and now I can't insert any carts. No to mention the keyboard is almost completely gone from almost 30 years of use. The only keys you can make out are the reset key, the Q,R,T,8,9,and zero keys, and the space bar.
I finally just decided to put the thing out of it's misery. But I'm gonna find a replacement. But it's just weird that the console is almost as old as I am, and it lasted this long... And I won't even get into the things that console has been put through over the years!
Looks like my games are gonna be lonely for a while. Funeral services (throwing it in the garbage) will be held tomorrow ;) :(

maybe you can find a cheap beater/broken system and part it out to fix yours?
sounds like you only need the cart connector and a keyboard thingy
i would want to keep my original system, especially after throwing out my original 2600 after it wouldnt work, because i could probably fix it now as to back when it broke :(

i would keep it for parts incase you find something that ha something broken that yours has that still works
especially for the controllers
what kind of controllers does your broken one have? are they hardwired into the system or removable?
either way keep those atleast, i have 2 systems and my hardwired one has a bad controller, and a guy gave me one of his and its all better now :)

Unfortunately, there's probably not much salvagable. It's gotten 3 repairs alone, in the past year. I just decided no more... It had a long, fruitful life.
I will probably open it up to save the joyticks and whatever else, before I chuck it.. I had the ones that were hardwired. And the console was modded for composite cables.

i think you should do a proper burial since your already gonna take parts of it for science :D , call all your buddies from the past that played it with you, post pictures of the system when it was young, if you have them
play the music as you all walk it to the curb
i still have my first ever pong system i got in 1977 from my uncle, if it died i dont know what i would do as i havent seen another one anywhere ever

I called up my dad, earlier. I told him "The Christmas present you got me 29 years ago finally died". He went "The Odyssey!?" and kinda giggled. "That thing lasted forever!"
He then proceeded telling me the story of the day I got it and the look on my face when I opened it. I feel like an old pet just died, now. I'm about to take it down to the basement and gut it.
Unfortunately the friends who played it with me back in the day, live in other states now. Since none of my friends now are gamers, I played it myself. Whenever anyone saw it sitting in my collection, they kinda giggle, and I get the typical "Atari was better" comment.

I would keep it on the mantle as a trophy of sorts. Keep it, don't gut it, and just have it there for the memories. Really no use in throwing it out. Too many memories man.

Brilliant!
Personally, Id keep it, the fact that you wore out an O^2 is like a badge of courage.
As a fellow lover of the system, I mourn with you over its loss, however.

I would at least take some of the plastic and put it in an urn style vase and place it in your colleciton. It makes one hell of a story. Dont throw it out, Just retire it.

Didn't have the heart to gut it. It's going on the 'retirement shelf' next to my R.O.B. that I accidentaly left the batteries in for almost a decade and destroyed the circuit board.
The GF and I are already searching Ebay for a replacement.

I would say you got full use out of it though. I hope I can say that in 30 years about my DC or PS2.

the death of an O^2 is always a traumatic experience...i hope you are coping okay....
....mine from the same time period (ie, purchased new) is still ticking....but, sadly it hasn't gotten as much play time as yours (none of the lettering is worn off).....
having a complete collection, i should bring out my O^2 and play some of its 49 glorious games (most of which I have never played)

Diskoboy, first of all sorry to hear about your Odyssey2. It was almost 30 years old, hell it's was older than me. but I do have something for you.
I live in Nashville and I have a Odyssey2 I am getting rid of. Would you be interested?

30 years, damn, thats a long time, solid stuff :) I would probly keep it even if it was broken, just for the nostalgia feeling. I still have my original NES that we got in 1989. But on the other hand, you cant keep everything :\

Just bury it in the ground, don´t throw it in the trash! ´Would you throw a buddy you´ve known for almost 30 years into the garbage? I think not.

Man sorry to hear that. You really should have dug a hole and buried it and then got a tomb stone. That would have been sweet. Unless a neighbor saw it then they would call the cops

Dont do it !!
this is how you repay old faithfull shep...!
you know that the replacement system wont be the same, it will be soulless.
why dont you give it an overhall, swap the innards of the new system with the old one at least maintain the shell, you know it makes sense.
we can help you through this difficult time, I have several videopac machines...but none are my original...you dont know how lucky you are.

Good. Throwing out something that old and part of your life just isn't right. I'm glad you're keeping it around :)

Hey, I also own a Odyssey (it´s called Philips G7000 in Germany), but I didn´t spend that much time with the system.
Anyway if I were you I would just store it somewhere to keep the memories...

Well you certainly got you parents monies worth : )
I still have one that was bought new when they came out, havent fooled with it in about 4 years but it was pretty minty when I put it in storage [ no moisture etc ] so its probably still ok. One of these days I will have to fool with it some, Ive really enjoyed it over the years and Im only missing about 3 games from being complete ; )

DEFNITELY. Don't gut it. Don't trash it. Keep it on a shelf as a personal museum piece. Sort of like having a taxodermist stuff your pet.

Diskoboy said he was holding onto the system (retirement shelf) earlier in this thread, unless I misread, and there are still replies telling him not to trash it :)

My first ever game system, a Coleco Telestar, is long gone. While it lasted it played, well, variations of Pong. I sold that thing some 20 years ago. Probably shouldn't have done that.

That's total BS. I would contact Magnavox and demand that it be covered under warranty.

Instead of just keeping it on a shelf gut it and turn it into a media box. Find a mini-sized motherboard with built in sound, video, TV-out and ethernet, and a small (10-20GB) hard drive. Download stuff to the hard drive and watch it on TV. If you're really technically inclined you might be able to make the Keyboard work somehow, but I've got no idea how. And one of the joysticks could work as a mouse!
Let me know if it works because I'm too busy to try it myself . . .

Sorry about your O2. I own one and actually it was my very first console back in 1979 in the form of a Philips Videopac G7000.
Keep it in a shelf is nice.. I would polish it and place it behind a showcase along with some carts and manuals.. something that noone else can ever touch..
Get another one too by the way.. :)
