I want to talk about Genesis games now.

I dont quite understand why people bash Golden Axe 3, for example. This site is the third one i visited, which has quite a negative review of that game. I remember the times when it was all the rage in the game clubs, though then i had no idea how Golden Axe or Golden Axe 2 looked or played. Now i go back and look at them - and they got nothing on GA3 !

Golden Axe 3 has :
Bigger, more clear sprites.
MUCH better animation.
Better hit detection.
Better music.
Better sounds (well, not that much better, but still)
Better FX.
Branching paths.
Better enemy design (while still quite crappy compared to some other beat'em'ups)
Coolness factor (panther, gah !)

HOW can people say things like (i quote) "GA3 is a dreadful game that craps all over the good name of the series" ?
Are they mad, blind, stupid, handicapped, or all of the above ?

Oh, and dont get me started on Shinobi series. Quoting from this site "Shinobi 3 feels very similar to the previous entry, Revenge of Shinobi." Like Hell it does ! All previous Shinobi's suck major ass, and only in Shinobi 3 they did every single thing right. God, i wish i was ANN right now, so i knew what to say about Shinobi and Revenge of Shinobi...

I might forgive you for the Golden Axe 3 being better than the first two games (deluded as that thought might be) but if you seriously think Shinobi III is better than Revenge of Shinobi, then you need to put down whatever's in that pipe you're smoking.

Well I don't know about Shinobi, so I'll just comment on GA3.

Having played all the Gen incarnements, I have to say that the likely GA3 is bashed more is due to the difference in GFX style and implementation of level design, rather than anything else.

Frankly I enjoyed it slightly more than the earlier titles, but that might just be as I tried 3 before them.

I thought the GA3 hate was due to the cheap enemy hits. Seriously, this game seems so cheap and brutal compared to the previous two entries.

As for Shinobi, well, I greatly disagree that Shinobi and Revenge of Shinobi suck... but I do agree with the karnot on Shinobi III being the best entry of the series.

Shinobi 3 had tighter control than "Revenge" and that makes it superior.

The original Golden Axe is the best of that series. 2 was just a soulless retread, and 3 just doesn't seem as tight as the others - despite bringing some new concepts to the Golden Axe universe.

As for the Shinobi debate, all three Genesis games were amazing. You can easily make a case for any of them being your favorite. To say that Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer sucked is just crazy.

Golden Axe 3 seemed rushed to me. The programming team could have done more. I felt it was lacking. I do need to play it through just to see it all, but I don't see it as superior to the other two.

Now, for Shinobi III, I enjoy all three of those games equally. You have to consider the playability of the games before coming to a "I hate x" conclusion.


Though Shadow Dancer is difficult to me. :(

Anyway, what i see here are people who say they disagree with me, but not bothering to argument their POV. I gave you the reasons to my thinking - you lot didnt. Thats exactly what i called "nostalgia clouded eyes".

Golden Axe III was alright. The main reason it was bashed was because it looked like it had not improved one iota over the first Golden Axe. Same gameplay, same type of enemies, same type of music, same type of graphics, same type of spells, same type of level design. Branching paths or not, it just didn't do anything new with the series. It looked and played just like a Sega Genesis game that came out in 1989 and they were trying to release it in, what 1994?

There is a big difference between Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros 3 and those came out on the same system as each other, a few years apart (and it showed in the improved graphics and gameplay).

There is very little difference between Golden Axe I/II and Golden Axe III and those were also released on the same console as each other, again a few years apart (so there could have been some growth in the series).

It is not a bad game, man. It is just a series that stopped evolving, kind of like the later day Final Fight games on Super Nintendo. I liked those games, too, so it is hardly a bad thing if you are type who doesn't require change in your sequels and are happy getting more of the same.

Honestly, I think a lot of well-meaning people bought into the rip job that EGM did on Golden Axe III in one of their issues when they previewed a bunch of imports. If EGM doesn't do that horrific write-up on the game, I think there would be a lot fewer negative reviews floating around the internet. A lot of people who played the Sega Genesis and liked the Golden Axe games were reading them back then. For every Golden Axe fan who was pissed at EGM for the review (believe me, I was) or disappointed/pissed with Sega since it didn't get released over here, there was another person who thought it did suck just because EGM said so (and the fact it never came out over here).

I have to wonder if the original poster was referring specifically to the review I wrote that's on the site, or one that's somewhere else here on the forum. For the record, the review I wrote is a couple years old now, but I still feel exactly the same way about GA3 now as I did then. It's not bad, but it's not great either.
