Dead Rising - Xbox 360
Doom 3 - Xbox, PC
Doom 3: Ressurection Of Evil - Xbox, PC
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories - PSP (The "Brawn of the dead" Mission)
House Of The Dead 3 - Xbox

Possibiliities:

Condemned: Criminal Origins (Xbox 360, PC)

Condemned may have zombies. There are enemies in this game that have blue skin and move like animals. There were also some wierd enemies in the burned section of the library but they may have not been zombies.

You missed some of the Resident Evil games. I'm no specialist on zombies, or anything, but there's also Return to Castle Wolfenstein. One of the Metal Slugs had them, too (I can't remember if it was 2 or 3 or both). Don't forget the first two Houses of the Dead (or DOOM and DOOM II) :)

The most obvious (other than RE series) is still overlooked I see. Castlevania, and pretty much all of em. I'm thinking there are literally hundreds of games featuring zombies. Gotta list 'em all! Best of luck to you. Oh my, I'm late for Ghoul School.

Don't forget one of the grandaddies of all the zombie games;

Deathrace 2000 (arcade)

zwackery
01-20-2007, 11:40 PM
The game Death Race (1976) was only very loosely based on the film Death Race 2000 (1975) (so indirectly, really, that New World Pictures never sought any sort of intellectual property infringement). As far as all of Exidy's official literature is concerned, the stick figure that the player runs down is not a zombie, but "an intelligent acting, evasive, running Gremlin" (quote is from the game manual). Some players - and more importantly, their parents - thought the Gremlins were supposed to be representations of people, hence the public outcry. Video game lore has spun the Gremlins into zombies. Even in Super Death Chase (1977), Exidy still referred to the creatures as Gremlins.

I'm not exactly following your rationale, especially given that what is defined as a zombie has changed over the years and particularly since you include the other Resident Evil games on your list (i.e., in RE4 it's Las Plagas that are changing people, but in the first Resident Evil it's the T-Virus). Are you defining a zombie as a human that was once alive, then had to die in order to be truly reanimated, no matter how that reanimation takes place (e.g., (voodoo) magic or scientific explanation)? Also, what if the game does not specifically call said creature a "zombie" such as the Evil Dead games where the creatures are "Deadites"?

I can say confidently (98%) that i remember zombies being in FF II (SNES) well its actually FFIV, but yeah. Final Fantasy for the nes might have em, not too sure.

If your unsure about the Rpgs check www.rpgclassics.com and check the enemy listings, they even got screenshots.

Good luck w/ your endeavour.

EDIT:
OK, you can add Final Fantasy (NES) Dragon Warrior II (NES) Final Fantasy II (SNES) .. Dragon Warrior III (NES) has a venom zombie so i dont know if ull include that.

I'm listing games with the living dead in them. I do not consider the people in RE4 to be the living dead because insects took over them and they didn't die before they were taken over.

Splatterouse - TG16 (Wich splatterhouse game(s)?)
*DP's resident Splatterhouse expert steps up to the plate* :D

EVERY Splatterhouse game, aside from the LCD handheld, have zombies in them. That list includes:

Splatterhouse (arcade)
Splatterhouse (PC Engine/TG16/FM Towns - all ports of the original arcade)
Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Grafitti (Famicom)
Splatterhouse 2/Splatterhouse Part 2 (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive)
Splatterhouse 3/Splatterhouse Part 3 (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive)

Don't forget Monster Party on the NES either; that game was home to the infamous Japanese dancing zombies.

PS: a list correction: that's Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, not Super Gouls And Ghosts. It's also available for the GBA.

Gotta add Final Doom & Doom 64.
And I'm pretty sure that every Castlevania game be it NES,SNES,GEN,PCE,N64,PS1,GBA had zombies in it, and usually at the very begining.

And I'll 2nd the removal of RE4, no zombies.

How about Twisted Metal 4, it had Rob Zombie?
And Way of the Warrior had White Zombie!

There's all kinds of zombies.....

Black Arts Zombies - created using spells, curses, possession or a simple concept of Hell.
Example:
Oane-Chapara
The Evil Dead
Hunter Reckoning
Darkwatch -zombies are created by the son of Satan
Doom -warp tunnels have tapped into Hell

Revenge Zombies -these have returned from the dead to exact revenge for some injustice they'd suffered in the past.
Example:
Stubbs the Zombie
Silent Hill

Viral Zombies - created by viral infections.
Example:
Resident Evil T-Virus

Genetic Zombies -created by genetic mutations/manipulation
Example:
Castle Wolfenstein
House of the dead

Chemical Zombies - created by toxic chemicals
Example:
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Alien/Space Zombies - created by alien infestation.
Example:
Half Life
Half Life 2
Halo
Halo 2
Quake 4
Zombie Nation

There's an entire undead race in Warcraft (Warcraft III and World of Warcraft). Lord Raptor from the Darkstalker games. That big guy from Guardian Heroes. More than half the enemies in Onimusha (never played the sequels).

The reason why I asked the question of Slate, and provided a couple of types of examples (and I just provided two for the sake of simplicity of discussion, but thanks for your list), was that Slate seemed to be thinking of zombies in a certain way but hadn't defined the term yet, and so I was curious about the slippage that made Resident Evil okay but RE4 not. I think there is also plenty of crossover between genres. If the virus comes from space, would you consider it a viral zombie, a space zombie, both, or something else?

From Slate's reply, what reanimates the person isn't the issue, only that the person has actually died first and is then becomes the "living dead".

BTW, as for Stubbs the Zombie, there is the suggestion in the game that the chemicals/technology used in Punchbowl are at least partially responsible for his reanimation, and his desire for revenge isn't so much the driving force as is his desire to be reunited with his lost love, Mrs. Monday.

Some people don't even classify "revenge zombies" as zombies, but refer to them more rightfully as revenants, and not all revenants who seek revenge are doing it for noble purposes. Revenants first appeared in medieval stories and typically have more intelligence than your average slack-jaw or wormpie.

Speaking of zombies, any fans of The Goon comic book in the house?

Actually, this is similar to something I've been trying to figure out, so I propose a bit of a side-quest to this zombie hunt.

Chinese and Japanese society have a specific type of zombie known as a jiangshi or kyonshi. They are generally shown with their arms extended in front of them in a similar fashion to some portrayals of Western zombies, but instead of shuffling or shambling, they hop, in fact that's what their name means: "hopping dead." They're the bodies of people who died far away from home and led home by Taoist priests, hopping all the way.

They were a common feature of a certain sub-genre of Hong Kong martial arts movies in the '80s, but they've also showed up in a few video games. The only example I've been able to track down for sure is Super Mario Land:
[IMG]http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/thumbnail/1111442263-00.png[IMG]

However I have clear pictures in my head of jiangshi in other video games, but I'm not sure which games I'm thinking of. I thought Psycho Fox maybe, but I was wrong about that. Anyone got any ideas? They're often depicted in shades of blue.

I played the PC version, it wasn't that bad. Sure, there's quite the annoying thing about shooting Zombies... and you get bit a lot but you don't die, but it's NOT that bad of a game.

The ending, though... and that fucking final battle. What a fucking disappointment those two were.
