View Full Version : Anyone excited for Crackdown?

This looks like quite a good game, can't remember the last cel-shaded game I played.
It's a shame it will most likely be known as "that game that had the Halo 3 beta". The beta is really just a nice compliment to the package in my opinion.
For those who don't know, there is a demo available Jan. 23rd on Xbox Live Marketplace.

I'll be honest, I'll be buying Crackdown for the Halo 3 beta invite. The game was a definate "try before you buy" for me before they announced the Halo bombshell. But after seeing some gameplay footage im a little more excited about it.
How can you not be excited for a GTA clone...with super powers?

The Halo 3 Beta is the only reason Crackdown is being reserved. The cool thing i guess is that the people invited for Halo 3 Beta will be able to offer their input/suggestions, and pros/cons of the game so it can be perfected for fans before it launches in november. I think the sword is getting traded out for a hammer...which is a great thing...god halo is lame.

Beta testers don't really have that much of a say, there responsible for finding bugs almost exclusively.

And the demo coming tomorrow.

I'm getting it purely for the Halo 3 beta since I didn't make it in the first round (nor the second one which should be about to happen). I'd really not heard alot about the game (nor had paid it any attention) so I'm just looking forward to the 'bonus' of it. Just like alot of people that bought the original Zone Of The Enders for the MGS2 demo disc.

...and no, I could give two shits about the beta. I'm buying this game for the game.

As interesting as a sandbox game with superpowers could be, I'm wary of the quality of this title.

I played the demo last night--and at first was totally hyped to play as a superhero in an open-world game. It just seems like a great concept that hasn't been done right yet.
My impressions:
-Average visuals, cell shading seems uneccessary for this game type. I wonder if it was used to make programming easier. From what I undertstand it is not very taxing on the system.
Visuals: 7/10
-THIS IS GRAND THEFT AUTO + Super jumps + Super Strength. I was woefully underwhelmed by the super powers available. I can't fly? WTF? I'm just really strong/really accurate/really agile and can kill ANYONE by kicking them? zzz. These are ALL of my powers? And the demo says that I'll have to level up (for much longer mind you) just to get these shitty powers? Have these guys ever read a comic book...ever?
Concept Implementation: 5/10
-Gameplay offers literally NOTHING new to the genre. There are seemingly limitless enemies thrown at you that you must kick, shoot or throw shit at. You can't walk 3 feet without being assaulted. How in the world do people even buy groceries in this city? Follow your map to the markers, kill said gang leaders and move on. Kill, jump, shoot, kill, drive, jump. The game technically plays well but offers nothing new (unless you include shitty underwhelming super powers).
Gameplay: 7/10
My #1 complaint (besides having felt I've played this before) would have to be the total underwhelming feelings I got from playing as a supposed Superhero cop. Does anyone else feel this way? I really thought there would be more to this game, and the average visuals just don't help. Maybe I should try co-op. But for now, this is a definite no-buy for me.

Preach on brother. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. The game has some excellent textures too. Go take a close look at the giant pizza in the funpark and see what I mean.
And those of you who aren't having fun, go level agility or strength to max level. If you have NO FUN with that...well..
This game has the best visuals I've seen stylistically too. That also means excellent draw distance. Go get your agility to max and climb the agency building and look around.. wow. Between this and Just Cause, I haven't seen better.
Very satisfying game, I hope those of you buying it strictly for the beta at least check it out.
EDIT: Oh yeah, Co-op FUCKING owns in this type of game. No restrictions to where you both have to be either.

I'm happy to see the 10 zillionith GTA clone continues to satisfy the masses. At some point we will see GTA4---and FINALLY HOPEFULLY see an actual evolution (not an upgraded clone) to the genre.
-Halo evolved the FPS genre (pardon the pun) and clones came out
-Mario advanced the platformer genre and clones came out
-GTA created the sanbox genre and clones came out
I enjoy games in the same genre that are clones. Don't get me wrong. I just ask for something new. And when it is new---make it legitimate. I still am waiting for superpowers that make me feel super in Crackdown.
Nesmaster

People like what they like. Most GTA clones do suck (and I really hate that term, I feel these games have evolved into a genre all thier own). I'm not forcing anyone to like this game. I absolutely despise Halo, but respect what it's done for that genre. Despite it being the 10 zillionith Doom clone, it really did evolve the FPS genre. And I feel that Crackdown is to the open world genre as Halo is to the FPS genre. GTA4 will likely be good, but between Crackdown and Saints Row it has it's work cut out for it. I hope the brillant minds at Rockstar truly do make it the best open world game that sets a new standard, because that only means better games after GTA4 has long been out.

01-24-2007, 06:52 PM
I played it again and stick by my sentiments. Boring. Ill-fitting graphics that don't flatter the genre, ridiculously simple and repetitive mission structure (as shown in the demo), half-ass superhero/cyberguy moves, and the city feels dead to me (I can't fathom how anyone could say this feels "alive" with scattershot cars and people). And I even LIKE sandbox clones. I've played and enjoyed Scarface, Just Cause, hell, even Gangs of London on the PSP. Sorry, this sandbox fan thinks Crackdown is crap. Might be the kind of game that appeals to people who don't usually like the genre ...

I didn't have a 360 when round 1 hit (and didn't think that I was going to have one) so I didn't enter. I also know that my playing online with any games has been really sporadic so getting in the 3 or 4 needed hours in Halo 2 and being one of the first 1000 people to email them most likely wasn't going to happen either. I just went the safe route and If I do make it in via the Halo 2 playing then w00t for me.

I played the demo more today. It's not exactly going to dethrone GTA (though it does top Saints Row) and I don't think it will necessarily evolve the sand box genre but it is a far more interesting twist on it than any prior game.
It's quite fun, I like it alot. It will most likely be a day 1 buy for me.

Well, the way the 2nd phase works is that you play 3 hours of halo 2 online within 3 days, and then on feb. 5th you be among the first 13,333 people to sign up. Still, the odds are against you ;p

Damn the demo was awesome! I leveled up to star power 2 and went to the carnival and jumped around the ferris wheel, It was awesome to see from the top how detailed the world of crackdown is. I can see cars from like a mile away in this game!
The co op was even more fun, I was playing one match, One guy kept kicking me off of a 20 story building... And In the same match I accidentally kicked him underneath a roof and it took a couple of minutes before he got out. Fun stuff.

After playing the demo this is a no buy for me. I played it for a couple hours last night and it feels like I have done everything. I didn't max anything out and I have no real drive to. I can't imagine putting in more than 2 or 3 hrs with the full game because it will take longer to level up just to get to the point where I am in the demo. I'll probably rent it at some point but thats most likely all it will get from me.

I started playing at 5pm last night, and didn't quit until around 11:30pm. A few breaks in between. I've already killed 8 bosses, and found about 150 of those green strength icons. About 70 of the secret icons.
This game is just a blast. Gameplay totally makes up all the little flaws.
Plus, there's nothing like jumping off a skyscraper, and landing on the ground with a huge crunch, and putting a huge crater in the spot you land.
I give this game a solid 9/10.

This will be one of the best games this year. Collecting orbs has been turned into the scurge of platform gamers to the most fun you can have on the 360.
Tons of multi-player contests too if you use your ingenuity:
Head up to an easily scaleable cliff next to an expressway. Spot a car incoming at full speed, target front tires, watch the fun. Whoever makes them flip the most or jump off the street (prefferably into water) is the winner.
Head into the chop shop. Both get into cars. First one to explode their vehicle WITHOUT hitting each other is the winner.
In the same place as the latter, let one player get into the car. Have them drive around while the other player tosses explosives in the way of the other player, whether barrels or grenades. Least number of tosses is the winner.
Find a somewhat straight rooftop. Pick two spots a decent distance apart. One player must charge the other WITHOUT FALLING OFF THE ROOFS while opposing player is launching grenades.
Who can stay alive longest after picking off pedestrians and cops?
Head to the top of the ferris wheel (easier said than done I know). Get kicked off. Whoever hits more poles/cars on the way down wins. Surviving the fall adds an extra point.
Jump on the head of your buddy from a solid height. Try three times. Whoever hits their target more is the winner.
Those are off the top of my head right now. I'm sure others will think of more.

Jeez, what a game. I've put about 30 hours into it in 3 days. There's not many games that get that much attention from me in such a short amount of time :).
A few things to note:
- Yes, collecting orbs is CRAZY addicting. I am NOT using a guide to find any right now, as it's more interesting to go through with a partner and try to find them. I need ~120 hidden orbs yet, these are beginning to be a bitch, and I'm down to 8 agility orbs and they're TOUGH to find now too...
- Finding those stunt markers can be quite challenging without a guide as well,as they don't seem to show up unless you're incredibly close to them. I found one, only to spawn 2 others RIGHT there when I hit the first one. heh :P
- Create an explosion so big that it almost makes the game freeze! LOL. Grab a friend, start mashing a bunch of stuff together, until you have a sizeable pile. Works best if one of you watch the pile and the other adds to it after a while, just in case something wants to disappear. One of you should have limpet mines, the other cluster grenades, and both rocket launchers. once you think your pile is big enough, and you'll know cause the game will start to lag, have whoever has the mines toss them around the pile. when he is done, the person with the cluster nades has enough time to launch 2 grenades before they explode. the SECOND after they player throws the second grenade, have both players fire a rocket each into the pile. Sit back and watch the fireworks. I did this with a pile so big that the game went like 1/3 of a frame per second. I did this explosion right by the beach on the Los Muertos island, by the little beach houses where the long chain of explosive barrels are. And yes, I added every one of those barrels to the pile. :)
- Take the agency supercar - works better if you're a higher level or maxed driving, and find a straightaway. Have your friend get into the little smart car and sit on opposite ends of a straightaway. Count down and drive at eachother, and when you guys collide straight on, well, bye smart car person (ie. HUGE FUCKING AIR!!!!) :)
-The agency SUV at max level, has the ability to drive up a flat wall FOREVER if you have the timing to do it. find a flat wall, park the SUV up to it, and drive slowly up the wall so all four of your tires are touching the wall. Press B right now to suck in your suspension, and hit the gas. You'll start to drive up the wall! If you have perfect timing, you can continue to go up and up, just hit b again THE SECOND that the suspension gives, and you SHOULD stick to the wall again. This is REALLY hard, I've only managed to do it twice successfully. My aim is to eventually maybe get to the top of one of the two huge Shai-Gen towers this way...
- Co-op is really where it's at for this game. It's so much better to run around and complete the game together, as well as kill each other from time to time or attempt any of this crazy stuff I've mentioned.
This game really is as deep as your imagination, and being that you're a much more capable protagonist than ever before in a sandbox game, it makes it that much more fun to continue to push the envelope of things you CAN and will do :)
EDIT: One other thing, this game RAPES you on psychotic. My agent is maxed and I can die in a few seconds flat if I'm not careful. Bosses take 12+ rockets to kill and thier health refills MAD if you give it time. I hid to regenerate my shield only, and I had the boss onto his last bar of health. By the time my shield regenerated, his health had regenerated completely. YIKES! Regular goons take 50+ shots from the machine gun that holds 80 per clip, and they have one bar of health! Remember that my firearms skill and explosive skills are maxed too! Oh, these numbers are from The Volk, so Los Muertos are probably a little easier. I didn't head to the Shai-Gen islands. I was too scared LOL

And all I have left to max out my agent is the driving skill.

-More futuristic weaponry
-Higher skill caps.
I definitely see this game getting a few awards when the time rolls around.

Funny story:
I've been home with the flu since Wednesday night. I bought the game Wed. afternoon and have been playing it nonstop since (easily 25-30 hrs put in so far). When I started the game up this morning I noticed that I've been playing it on "Psychotic" mode (the hardest difficulty) the whole time. This could explain why it was taking me 15-20 times to kill each gang leader. The Los Muertos "car guy" killed me at least 30 times...and I couldn't figure out why.

Okay - I now have almost 400 agility icons. But only 70 secret icons.
I beat the game 3 days ago, now. I'm still playing it collecting the rest of the icons, doing the roof and car races, and trying to get some of these achievements, and causing general mayhem. All with the ambient crime turned on..
I was looking at IGN earlier, I find it odd they gave it a pawltry 8.0 (The Aussie review was an 8.4). This game honestly feels like a total re-invention of the sandbox genre. What flaws did they see that I must've missed? I dare say, I'm enjoying this game more than Gears Of War...

C'mon man. I'm a sandbox fan myself, but this game certainly hasn't re-invented the genre. The missions are repetitive and relatively uninspired, the ambient world is on par with other this-gen efforts (e.g. Saint's Row), and if the superhero thing floats your boat, the Hulk game a year ago gave that to us. 8.0 is generous IMO. They've pulled together some neat concepts, but nothing here hasn't been done elsewhere, and in some cases (e.g. missions) better.

Just picked it up today thanks to that $10 off coupon I found in the BB sale thread. Hopefully I'll get to spend some time with it soon, but I'm just scared I won't finish Gears if I start playing this. My time is a bit limited.
So once all the generals, kingpins, and final fights are cleared, do all the gang members in the city disappear for good, or are there still some enemies left hanging around the city?
If they disappear for good, I'd better stop stomping the leaders long enough to get all my enemy killing-related achievements in before everyone disappears, or else I'll have to start over just for those achievements.

Yeah I didn't know that at first. I'm down to about 12 agility orbs but I still need a TON of the hidden ones.
Can this "ambient crime" become intense enough (after sufficient provocation) for me to obtain, say, the "Pop the tires of 20 gang-operated cars in 60 seconds" achievement after I've beaten all the bosses? If so I'm going to continue on my merry way.

It can indeed. Just fill the gang meter all the way up and you will provoke a gang war, just like before you killed all 21 gang members.

Of course you don't even need gang heat on you to do this. There's 5 gang cars just sitting there in Diaz' car garage, even long after you have killed him. Just put the cars in a line and walk up and down each side of the car shooting tires.
