Im at the "tank/spider" boss and you shoot the 4 huge pipes and they roll into the middle and break apart.. Ive gotten far enough when he starts blowing the floor up and the lavas showing, then i usually run out of ammo, and die,what am i doing wrong?

The mechs on the sides are key. There are a few rocket launchers and the all-too-deadly laser up there that has unlimited ammo. I hid behind the mechs, took the weapons off and popped him when I had an opening. I never hit him with the pipes, and I'm not even sure if they do damage. It was a long fight, but that laser is the key.
