View Full Version : A question about Soukyugur . . . uh, a shooter.

Has anyone ever played the PSX version of Soukyugurentai (http://hh141.hiphip.com/templates/frmTemplateS.asp?CatalogID=5347&SearchYN=N&subFolderID=1)? With the Saturn title being somewhat pricey, I'm looking hard at this PlayStation re-release, and even holding out hope that someone releases it over here as part of the recent wave of budget shooters.

Yes. Many Japanese people have. :splat:
I've only got the Saturn version, but I hear tell that the PSX version has an extra ship and bonus slow-down not found in the Saturn version--nothing to make it unplayable, though.
If I didn't have the Saturn version already, I'd probably grab this one. Who knows--having a copy might come in handy if I pick up the PSone LCD monitor.

Has this been emulated yet? Dodonpachi got the MAME treatment about a year ago... I'd like to give this one a try as well.

Nope, still not emulated. Arcade Soukyugurentai runs on Sega ST-V (Saturnish) hardware, I think, which is at least being worked on by mame and a few other emulators right now, but nothing's playable yet as far as I know. I was hopeful for the ST-V driver when Die Hard Arcade showed up in mame a couple releases ago, but it wasn't playable at all, and it was removed with the next release. Ah well.
That PSX rerelease does look pretty tempting, though...I know the Saturn version is awesome (second-best shooter on the system, easily), and assuming the PSX one isn't too different, I'd say it's definitely worth the cash.

I wish Konami would release Gradius Gaiden in the US as a budget shooter title. I know the likely hood of that happening is slim to none though.

Whoa, Sardius! What brings you here?
The Saturn hardware seems to be awfully hard to emulate. Same goes for the N64, which nobody seems to have gotten a handle on... I've played nearly a half dozen N64 emulators and they all STINK. Project 64 is the best one I've tried so far and even that isn't terrific.

Eh, I first got an account here just so I could read the members-only forums and tell RW how much of an idiot he is, but this place is starting to grow on me.
And yeah, N64 emulators are an exercise in frustration for sure...Project 64 is the best by far, but it still seems like every game it plays is critically flawed in some way, often to the point of unplayability. Sucks. I mean, I want to play through Castlevania 64 sometime just out of morbid curiosity, but not if it means having the gameplay freeze up for a period of ten seconds after every few minutes of play FOR NO DAMN REASON. Arrr!
Arn - Keep hope alive. If Sol Divide and the Space Channel 5's can be released in the US, anything's possible.

Hey, where are people finding this reissue? The only place I normally order from is Video Game Depot and they don't have it.

It's not out yet. I presume that VGDepot will carry it when it comes out. I ran a search for the title at ncsx.com, and found this:

Thanks man. God I'm getting lazy. I suppose I could have looked that up myself, but I assumed it was out. :P
Still waiting for Gunbird...err...Moble Light Force to drop. :)

Speakin' o' Mobile Light Force, why didn't they just call it "Sexy Gunbird"?
Worked for Parodius...

Someone informed me the other day that XS Games is apparently based in West Chester, Ohio. Since that's about twenty-five minutes away from me, I'm tempted to head down there and bang on their door until they answer my every question about this "Mobile Light Force" thing.

Check the main new board... it seems that Sega has come up with its own saturn emulator and will soon allow Japanese to download Saturn ROMS (as well as Mega Drive/Genesis and Sega CD) and play them, for a fee. I'm surprized anyone was able to come up with a decent Saturn emulator being that the little beast is so complex, but technology marches forward nevertheless!!!
