I'm really picky. I want fun gameplay, and if it's turnbased I want it to be something different at least. And also no or not frequent random battles.
Thanks in advance.

just get Mario and Luigi. Great game, no random battles.

I loved FF3 DS, but that might fall under "too many random battles" by your definition. At least, the job system is fun, the adventure is satisfying, and the graphics are beautiful.
I want to get Tao's Adventure, because it's a semi-sequel to Azure Dreams for PS1 (which I loved to pieces), but I haven't played it yet. Gamespot and a few other places tore it apart, but the battling is definitely different. It's a hybrid action-RPG/turn-based system. Hard to describe.

Um, yeah. If you don't like random battles, stay FAR, FAR away from FF3.

I second Mario and Luigi. I haven't played the 2nd one on DS, but the first one (for GBA) is pretty good, with excellent translation and lots of tongue-in-cheek humor.

You cannot go wrong with either SuperStar Saga or Contact. Contact has a very similar flavor to Earthbound. The battle system is pretty unique, and you either like it or hate it. I own and play both, I dont think I could pick. I would stay away from FF3 and Lunar: Dragon Song though.

I will 3rd Mario & Luigi, but also recommend you try Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime.
I still need to pick up and try out Contact.

Here's another vote for Rocket Slime, Tank Battles for the win!
