I was just messing around not thinking it would work but I plugged in my power base converter to my CD-X and it works. I thought for sure it wouldnt be compatible but it was. Maybe a wasted thread but I could have sworn I had seen someone else say it didn't work and just had to post it.

Yeah, first thing I tried out when I got mine. It just pushes on the AC adaptor plug a little bit.
It really is an all in one sega machine. The only problem is that Beggar Prince won't save on it, so i'll have to hang onto a spare genny 1 until I beat it.

That is so COOL! .. and what a coincidence because the last few days I've been thinking about coming here and asking about that myself! In the past couple of months I have sold ALL of my various models of the Genny, my Sega CD units, my X'Eye and a used 32X. ALL I have left is my CDX.. a brand new in box 32X and an immaculate JAP Gen I model. I already knew about the 32X compatibilty.. but I wondered about the SMS convertor because I have also sold my SMS models I & II and I practically forgot that I had one of these until the other day. Only SMS game I have left is Phantasy Star but I kinda' thought that I'd have to pick up a junker SMS to play it on.. NOW I DON'T!
Quick question though.. are you guys talking about the 1st model convertor? (The one that was kinda big and semi-round shaped.. had a card slot as well) or the second one? I've seen a smaller rectangular one.. but not that often (BOTH are official Sega products) and they are usually being sold out of Europe.. I believe they DON'T have a card slot as well (much like the SMS II didn't). I thought that just by looking at it and observing the "curved' underside of the SMS convertor (I'm assuming to fit snugly against the top of a model I Genesis obviously.. because they DO look like that's the model they're made for.. besides that little "hole" so one can get to the reset button on the Genny).. I thought it wouldn't fit in the cart slot of the CDX.
Anyways.. thanks for that info!

I'm talking about the big one. It is kind of funny because it dwarfs the cdx.

Yup.. that's the one I got.. awesome. I was gonna' try it on my JAP Genesis but I figured that would definitely be incompatible.

My friend chris did this and he used some RadioShackery to eliminate the plug pushing. I'm not sure exactly what he did or how but if I can get a hold of him he may remember. There's enough smart guys here though that I'm sure it could be figured out pretty easily.

Be wary of leaving it in too long, though. I used my CDX to play through Phantasy Star 1, and left the PBC in the machine when not in use. Apparently as the back of the PBC was pushing down on the power cord for so long, this caused something to come loose inside the system, as now the power will randomly cut out for a brief moment, just long enough for the machine to reset. I replaced the power supply, but it's still doing it.
I dunno what's messed up, but as soon as I find someone to fix it, I'll definitely get a radio shack plug to avoid that happening again.

Good to know, I had only tested it for a minute but was planning on playing through Phantasy Star sometime soon.
What do you mean by a radio shack plug? Is it longer? More durable?

That was probably a reference to my post. The problem there is that it isnt just some magic plug you can buy. My friend Chris is some what of a MacGuyver and rigged up a custom job with parts from RadioShack. It's not a product you can buy fully assembled. I can try to contact him and ask him what he did, but it may be hard. His job at the UPS store sent him to Bolivia recently.

Ah, not too big of a deal but if you get a chance i'd be interested in knowing what he did.
Maybe I could just operate on the PBC, the majority of it is hollow anyways.

what i want to know (and i know nothing about this)
Is it possible to make the PBC to play games without a Genesis?
like to attach a power supply or is it alot more detailed, like it would need something from a Genesis to work like that?

I think the PCB requires the Z80 that is inside the Genesis.

He probably just soldered a couple wires to the inside of the unit at the power port and led them to outside the unit where a power port could be extended to outside the unit. That way, the plug is nowhere near the PBC.

He described it to me on the phone. It sounded very similar to what you said. I'm not good at that sort of thing but you've basically got it. He also told me that if damaging the unit wasnt a concern to the user you can just saw or sand off the back part where you were supposed to use a screw to secure it. That portion is just extra plastic and cant be used on a CDX anyway.

Yep! That's what I ment. The convertor in there is so damn tiny. Look at this thing...
