Ive always praised Sega, it has been my favorite video game company for years and will remain that way for many to come. One of the biggest reasons for this is because back in the day, there wasnt a thing as violent video games... at least none that i played (except for chiller on the NES). Now before Sony came along with the playstation, you had your two MAIN competitors: Nintendo and Sega. Now some violent video games did make it to Nintendo such as wolfenstein 3D and mortal kombat... but as you know they toned down the violence quite a bit. But sega has enough balls to put these games out the way the should be put out. Now, the game Im going to review isnt the most violent game ive ever played... i mean it doesnt have blood or anything, but it is a good game... and serves us with some good old fashion chaos.
Skitchin' for the sega genesis was the first game i ever played that had a warning at the begining because of the illegal activities that take place in the game along with the crazy stunts and violence, which i thought was awesome. Not too many games had that at the time. Alot of people that i have talked to about this game have either never heard of it or they thing road rash is alot better (a simular game made first by the same company). Of course road rash was a good game... but i dont think it has anything on skitchin.
The game play is great, racing on inline skates, beating other skaters with pipes, chains, bats etc, hanging onto the back of cop cars in fear of being arrested lol (great stuff).
The game modes include: single player story mode, 2 players alternating, tournament, 2 players competitive and 2 player head to head.
So lets jump into a single player game. The first thing you will do is enter your nickname, which will show you where you rank in the races and what not. Next, you will see your status menu which will show you how much money you have, your password for this level and the condition that your gear is in. It also gives you options such as the shop where you buy new gear such as skates, knee pads, etc. You can also go to cd player were you can choose the music you would like to listen to during the next stage. This gave me the feeling that i was in control of the game, which is different for a lot of games that came out at this time (besides RPGs). Ok so lets just go ahead and start the first race.
Before the race starts you will get somewhat of a story. A punk looking reporter will interview the #1 racer in the town that you are in and he/she will give you a little inside scoop of what you are about to expect, sometimes they even give hints... so it is a good thing to pay attention to the talking parts.
Ok, so the race has finally started. Well the graphics are very good in my opinion, they look a little bit blocky... but that is normal for a game of this time. Your on screen menu has several things. First of all, the most important thing that you will be using this most is your mirror, this is an essential so that you can see upcoming cars and other racers. Then you have two meters. One meter tells how much your gear has until it becomes useless, the other is your health bar. If your health bar runs out then you will be taken to the hospital and will get money taken out for the bill. Then you have another bar, but instead of this one being your heath, it is how much of a beating you can withstand before you let go of a car or just fall down (if your fighting in the middle of the street). Under this bar is your enemies withstand bar. Then you have a spot that shows you what place you are in. Finally, you have your inventory. You can hold 3 weapons or speed boaster. To select an item, hold down the start button and move your d-pad left or right (you wouldnt believe how long it took me to figure that out... and how stupid i felt when i finally did lol).
Now lets talk about the controls. They are not the worst controls i have ever seen in a game... but they are not the best. Everything has sort of a late reaction, for example: if you press start to pause the game, it takes about a whole 1 Mississippi second for it to actually pause... ok maybe not that long, but it sure seems like it. Of course, you learn to ignore it. To perform commands is a little strange too, but easy to learn. To grab onto an upcoming car on the left side of you, you must hold down A and left on the d-pad, and the same thing for an upcoming car on your right except you hold (you guessed it) right on the d-pad... simple enough right? To make your skater skate, all you do is hold down the B button and steer him. To excicute a punch or strike with a weapon, you push the C button and left or right at the same time depending on what side of you that your enemy is on. Now you also use the C button to jump, all you do is press C while holding up on the d-pad. Tricks can sometimes be difficult to pull off. To perform a trick, wait till you hit a ramp of some sort and press a direction on the d-pad or any of the 3 buttons A B and C. For your own safety, try to only push one button while in the air, it is next to impossible to perform more than one trick at a time... but can be done.
There are many ways to make money on this game... and if you have been living on a different planet for the last... million years, MONEY IS GOOD lol. If you complete the race in under a certain amount of time then you will get a bonus stage and if you complete the bonus stage then you will get some extra cash. You get money depending on your what position you finished the race in, knockdowns, tricks, number of vehicles skitch’d, number of cop cars skitch’d and how long you skitch’d the cop car, thrash bonus and warp bonus. In my personal experience, skitchin’ cop cars is the best way to make money (besides bonus stages). For every second that you stay attached to the cop car you get a dollar, but make sure you stay crouched while skitchin’ a cop car because you can get busted... which will cost money to get bailed out of jail.
This is another game with great music. Its catchy fast paste tunes that really help you get into the game... or you can just turn off the music in the options and see what the game is like without music... go ahead try it, ill wait......... boring huh?
As you progress in this game it gets a lot more challenging, don’t think this game will be a walk in the park. You will have to deal with cars on both sides of the road, road construction and very long levels.
As for the multiplayer modes... i cant say that they are just as fun. They move slower, look worse and handle badly. But if you can get over that then by all means... share the joy of this game with other people by joining a head to head match or tournament.
All in all, this game is a very exciting experience and deserves the purchase... besides you can probably find it for 5 bucks at a local second hand store. Just give it a try if you haven’t... i dont think you will regret it... i never have.
