Anyone have any info and know how rare the mortal kombat controllers for the sega genesis that used cartridges with cheats loaded on them are? There was a version 1 and a version 2. I believe they were made my "interactive." I tried looking them up on the guide but couldn't find anything here or on ebay. Any info would be great!

Thanks!!!

if you are talking about the official sega genesis 6-button controller then...no. I'm not sure how many buttons are on the controller. They came with different carts for different cheats for each character. I've tried looking for pic, but can't find any...

Back in the "Day" I had a programable controller that I used for Brutalities and max combos on UMK3. It also had an LCD screen that showed the 6 buttons on a screen so that you knew that you were inputting the right moves and counter circle and so-forth.

Prob. not you were looking for though as I have never seen an official MK genny controller. Are you sure one exists. Seems I would have knew about back in the MK heyday.

If you have a pic please post it.

I saw it at the flea market so I don't have a pic and I can't find one online. Not ebay, google or on here. And as to my knowledge they were made my a company named interactive and I don't think they are official. They were also made for MK3, I think.

I remember seeing an ad for some cheesy controllers deep in the catacombs of a 400 page ad-filled issue of EGM during their "Street Fighter 2 era." It has been so long but I am pretty sure they were controllers that could be used for the Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat games on both Genesis and SNES.

I seem to think that they fell into one of these two categories:

1. Controllers which came with moves ALREADY programmed into certain buttons (extra buttons) like Ryu's Dragon Punch and things like that. Basically a one-button Dragon Punch which takes most of the tension out of a Street Fighter 2 contest.

2. Controllers which allowed YOU to program moves from those fighting games to correspond with certain buttons, which may have been extra buttons somewhere on the controller.

EGM used to run ads for some serious vaporware that I still don't believe exists today, mostly by Innovation. Game enhancers called the Game Wizard and Gamage. A Street Fighter clone, which I think was for Game Gear, that I also saw in an Innovation ad. I've never seen it mentioned in a rarity guide, probably because the game didn't exist.

EGM used to have weird stuff advertised in those huge EGM issues from 1993-1995. I got burned by at least 2 fly-by-night companies I ordered from who I learned about through ads buried deep in EGM. When they had issues that long, sooner or later they ran out of credible advertisers and had to fill space somehow.

Go back and pick it up, post a pic, and I'll buy it for whatever it costs you if you don't want to keep it.

I have this controller and also could not find any info about it when I first got it. It's called the Mortal Kombat II Kontrol pad. It has 3 "Kartridges" with pre-programmed moves like fatalities and friendships. Turbo and slow buttons, and character select buttons. The booklet offers other carts for other games like fatal fury and Streets of Rage 3 but I haven't even seen any on ebay or in the wild. I've also seen these controllers for SNES but I will try to get a pic of mine up tonight if it helps.

They're neither rare, nor sought after since they're just a crutch for non-MK-gamers. Folks that bought them because they couldn't really play MK wouldn't have kept them and folks that can play MK never needed them in the first place. A curiosity or an odd little extra controller for a die hard MK or controller collector, but not much more. :)

Cool, I didn't know there was a Genesis version of this controller.
I've got the SNES version, never seen it before or after i bought mine.
There's also a SNES version for MK2

Here's the MK3 SNES version:

This quote made me laugh harder than I have in months.

"Now You Can Master Over 250 Moves!"

Uh, not quite. Somebody else already "mastered 250 moves" at a factory and programmed them into those cartridges. All for the low cost of $7-8 per hour.

I wonder how many kids used this baby for a few months and walked into an arcade to play a few games of Mortal Kombat 3, believing they had "250 moves" under their belts.

Regardless of my comments above, I still think it'd be pretty neat to own, though.

Or they used them and made you use one without them programmed in and laughed at you when you were unable to do fatalities with ease like them.

Well I am a "Die hard MK fan" and Iv'e never even seen them. I was serious when I said I'd buy it from ya if you bought it. PM me. That would look awesome with my MK collection, (Although I never needed one to whip ass)

I even went so far back in the heyday to have the UMK logo airbrushed on my jacket. Looks like you paid 15 bucks for it. LMK

Hey, you've never told me exactly what is in your MK collection. Let's see. You said pretty much all of the home versions, I know that much. You'll have to tell me what you have the next time I hear from ya.

I just noticed something funny about the "kartridges." Above on the sticker where it says "by innovation" somebody at the factory marked out "for SNES" with a permanent marker. If you look hard enought on the picture I posted you can see a slight discoloration. If you look on Bangtango's pic, it shows the "for snes"

...cheap assess...

Just thought I'd throw that in.

I have had a set of these for years tucked away...never knew the value. But I also have more than just the three carts I see everyone showing here. I believe I have six different carts...and you plug in one for whichever character you wish to fight as. Any idea how many carts were actually available?

Well, see if your carts are any different from the ones that are posted already.

The Genesis one I see has:
Sindel/Sub-Zero
Liu Kang/Kano
Nightwolf/Jax

The SNES one I see has:
Stryker/Kabal
Cyrax/Sektor
Kung Lao/Sheeva/Sonya Blade

There's only two more characters- Smoke and Shang Tsung.

Of note is the fact that the SNES one is version 2 and the Genesis one doesn't state 1 or 2, so it may be version 1 and neither have the same characters.

Just found this site which sheds some light on a few things.

Kontrol Pad (http://www.gameexpress.com/product_detail.cfm?UPC=738012870013)

Apparently, there were versions 1 and 2, you could purchase karts for the other version and the Smoke/Shang Tsung Kard came in a bonus set.

Has anyone ever seen carts for additional games? The manual for mine advertises other carts available for games like Art of fighting,Samurai Shodown,Eternal Champions, NBA Jam, Super Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage III,TMNT Tournament Fighters,Double Dragon V, and Fatal Fury special just to name a few. Theres also a 4th bonus card for MKII if you ordered a second controller. It would be cool to see some of them if anybody has them. Anyone know how rare they might be?
