I know this has been brought up in the long past but I posted this on another forum just wanted some answers. :)

Anyone remember the competion Blockbuster threw back in the 1990s with NBA Jam and Judge Dredd for Sega Genesis?

I remember back than winning my store with a couple million points when I say a couple I mean (2-3million). I do remember calling around some stores and some having final scores of $8-15million points. How was it ever possible to get that much? I know there was 1 part on Judge Dredd that had a point in the level where you could get a million point bonus thing, but I've played the emulated version, have not found anything to get point totals that high. It's been bothering me for a long time now. Any ideas how it was done and has anyone ever seen a copy to buy on EBay, if so how much did it go for?

Edit: As promised today (1/31) I have added the picture frame from the competition in a below post

Well I can answer the ebay thing...Nope...There hasn't been one of these up that I have seen in several years. I think there's been 2 I've seen sold total. 1 went for a $50 BIN on ebay, and the other sold for big money here on this board.

The one listed on eBay was listed twice and ended $1500 or so with no reserve. (The buyer wanted $2500) THe only two copies I know of (someone said there may be more) are owned by myself and Nicola.

I would assume there would be more than just 2 out there, since every Blockbuster store was using it for the competition. Wouldn't make sense to destroy all of them after the contest was over.

Here is one that sold right here on the forum. Apprently, someone has two copies out there.

AcePuppy: If there are more, no one has found them. Blockbuster did not really sell or give many of these away.

rbudrick: Portnoyd bought one on eBay, sold it to Nicola.
4th Survivor sold to Nicola. Nicola traded to me. Still two copies.

Esquire: Those extra copies are unconfirmed. Again, I am sure there are more than "2" but the grand total is under 5 right now for sure. There are only 2 CONFIRMED copies.

I remember a year or two ago seeing 2 of them on Ebay (by the same seller I think). I think 1 was red and 1 was blue (the label).

chicnstu: You are confusing it with Game Factory carts. The only time this appeared on ebay other than the portnoyd BIN was from the 4th Survivor, who listed it twice. The game does not have that type of label.

The one that Portnoyd sold to Nicola was the one that sold for $50 BIN on ebay. I saw it like 2 mins after he bought it :( ad 4th survivor was the other one I was thinking of, so yeah those are the only 2 I know of.

In my daily search I have different and in-depth strings for the Blockbuster cart. Nothing has yet been found.
The copy I've bought from 4th Survivor is the only one I know with 2 booklets and the letter you had to submit to partecipate.
As for the booklets, one is the same that comes with Donkey Kong Competiton carts, the other is completely different.

I've seen the cart before (back in the 90s when competing in the competition) however have never seen the booklet.. any chance of posting a screenshot?

Edit: Last night I remember going through my basement looking for the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship picture frame with my name on it and found it. I'll have to post it later when I get home from work.

The frame was kinda nice. Black metal if I recall. And they were also giving away tons of X-Men cards as well. I still have about 50 unopened packs of those. My friend and I won the DK comp at about 5 stores each and we still have all of the "stuff" that went along with it.

As far as the Genesis cart, it hasn't been widely distributed as far as eBay and other areas. They're probably stored away somewhere at Sega or whoever was responsible for the carts.

Any ideas who produced the carts? If that could be determined, then that might be where all of the carts were returned.

Acclaim?

DreamTR
01-31-2007, 03:33 PM
Yeah, it was Acclaim. So if a bunch of them were not found by now from the bankruptcy auctions, and Blockbuster does not have a bunch stored in some decrepit storage facility, then we aren't seeing 'em anytime soon.

As promised this morning here is the picture frame. I blacked out my last name just for privacy purposes and marked AcePuppy on it so people can't pass it off as there own. Believe it or not its still in Mint to Near Mint condition. The metal frame has minor scratches but thats about it. :) Picture was taken using my Camera phone, the digital camera does not have workable drivers yet in Vista.

That's pretty awesome, but just to let you know, they used just some cheap frames from Wal - Mart. The reason why I know this is because when I won a store comp on the SNES, they broke the frame's glass while inserting my certificate. The guy made a comment about the frames being cheap frames from Wally world.

I need to find my certificate now.

Please make no confusion here: the II on the cart refers to the Competition (second competition).
The carts used and made officially for the tournament were this Genny cart and the DK one for SNES. This for sure, since is told on the rules booklet.

The infamous BWVGC I and III don't exist.

Instead, there could have been different games for demo plays, just like the NWC.

For the first competition, as is clearly told in the event booklet (check your copy od Donkey Kong's one too, since it's the same), they have used:

NBA Jam
Sonic 3
Clay Fighter

The final round has been held in Fort Lauderdale.
Winners:
SNES-Mark Guinane
Genesis-Fred Dughty

Between the prizes, they have been "digitalized" to be put in the Sega CD game Super Strike Trilogy (unreleased?).

$2000.00?!??!!?!? Holy CRAP!

Hey DreamTR, about the prices, I thought I read that in an earlier post on DP about the Blockbuster VGC... Course I could be way wrong... But... No one still answered the question, how much would one of these things go for today?

DreamTR
02-07-2007, 03:48 AM
It's hard to say what it would go for. There are a handful of collectors that would pay $1500 on the spot for the game, I am sure of that. As far as rarity, it is nearly impossible to locate, and since the two confirmed ones are in collector's hands, it's not going to be possible to see what it would go for on running auction until someone puts one out there.

There are not too many Genesis collectors, and this definitely does not have the lore behind it like the NWC. Rarity does not always equate to value. I think as a running auction, no reserve, it would hit $1200-1600 MAX.

If you advertise an ebay auction on here and other forums that are heavily dedicated to classics and people want to own in there collection you may get more money for it. If your not willing to sell it unless for a specific price just set a reserve on it. I'd be willing to lose a couple bucks if I owned something that rare and it didnt meet the price on EBay, you'll whind up making up for it anyhow in the end by selling it to someone on here or on another collectors form. Just ask for another 10-15$ or however much u spent to list the ad on EBay to make up for ur loss. :p

Cant wait to see the picture. Haven't seen the actual game since the actual competition. :)

4ever2600
02-07-2007, 11:23 PM
I don't quite have an asking price yet... I'm just letting the offers roll in... I'm sure most of you want to know... the cart is in great shape... White label is in good shape, has a couple little dirty spots, nothing major. Yes, the cart works as I would never sell one that didn't... Even has remnants of what Blockbuster used to put on their carts (silver security stickers) that once peeled off, left a checkered silver pattern. Yes, it definately under those terms came from a Blockbuster... Any other questions I haven't answered, by all means don't be afraid to ask... I can't believe one of these things sold for $2500.00! I never really realized this cart was soooooooooo friggin rare! But I can understand why... I'm definately interested in serious offers, if I decide to just set a price outright, I'll post it here...

4ever2600
02-07-2007, 11:49 PM
Here is alot clearer picture of the cart.. Learned lots about my digital camera tonight! :) The things we teach ourselves when money is on the line... LOL

On the front of the cart, the couple little 'dirt marks' aren't dirt marks at all, they are actually part of the silver label that blockbuster used to put on the back of the cart which was long enough to wrap around the cart to a small portion of the front of the cart. If you weren't lucky, some idiot employee would put that OVER the paper label which meant it would NEVER come off without removing the entire label... This baby was lucky! Which makes one of you even LUCKIER!

The back of the cart has the 'remnants' of one of those security stickers on it...

Now don't get me wrong, I could googone ALL of that and make it a completely clean cart, but I think leaving the label in tact makes it a little more authentic... CMON, how many of us rented games from blockbuster and HATED that stupid security sticker! But, nonetheless I think I'll leave that up to the person that buys the cart. Give me all of your thoughts on that one...

Thanks! - D

DreamTR: I should have clarified... What I meant was, I was going to start a thread in the Marketplace / Buy / Sell section offering the game for sale with what I wanted to get for the cartridge.

Only question is, what if two people hit me with the same offer? Who do I decide gets it? First come first serve? Should I do auction style?

PS to those of you interested, I noticed on some of the other posts, some people prefer to remain annonmous if they purchase the cart and that is no problem, I would be discreet if that is your preference...

Not to get too off topic here, but...

I read about so many people over the years that say that their Genesis (or SNES) collection will never be complete without these ultra-rare competition/championship carts. But why? Why should these be listed as games to complete the collection in the guides?

My point is, these are *not* retail releases. They had to be obtained a special way (ie: win a competition) and never available to the public in the way that retail games were. In my eyes, they are *almost* prototype status in a sense. I think they should be listed as such in the guides, and that a "complete" Genesis or SNES (or what have you) collection should consist entirely of retail games only. Games that could have been gotten by any average joe. Maybe these should be listed in a "Special" category in the guide. Maybe I should convey this message in the other forum regarding the guide :)

At least that is what I think about it. Awesome carts to have (I have SNES comp carts myself), but should not determine what a complete set for a said system is.

EDIT: Posted in the guide forum as a matter of fact. Any replies to this particular topic should go there. Thanks!

Let's not get into the slippery slope that is a "complete" collection. Safest bet is going by retail releases. Once you start counting giveaway carts, prototypes and other random carts your going to extremes. There fun to own these games (personally have the snes ones) but I don't go out of my way to overpay for them either. If we start saying complete genesis, will we include the different variations such "sega classics" versions, paper box and plastic box versions, etc??? It's a road that never ends because someone will always want to be the "ultimate" collector by having everything for that 1 system.
