Seriously?
Why has this not been mentioned?
You're all terrible, terrible people, because this is completely my dream Nintendo DS game, as it should be yours. This should be all the rage. I'm disappointed. You call yourselves gamers? Hah.

Seriously though, Picross seems to be like Earthbound to Nintendo. Nintendo released one title, and despite gaining a cult fanbase, they won't give future releases a shot in the US. It's a shame.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, the game was released last week. Even Play-Asia has it in stock. I wasn't suggesting you should buy it from that ebay auction - it was just a point of reference.
And if you don't understand the hard-on for Picross, then you've never played Picross. I will suggest that.

It's the same game as Picture Puzzle on NGPC. But the Nintendo Picross games do have a Nintendo attention to detail. The only US release was Mario Picross on B+W Gameboy. There were Japan Gameboy and Super Famicom sequels.
Does anyone know of DS Picross will support color Picross puzzles? DS Puzzler: NumPlay Fan & Oekaki Logic - The import DS Oekaki (picross) game I picked up - has hit or miss puzzles (sometime I'm not sure what I'm looking at after solving them). But it does have 500 puzzles and many of them are multicolor which is pretty cool...

Still not caring. Also, that DS Fanboy site didn't tell me what my non-DS-loving, penny-pinching, shmup-playing self would like about the game, so I still really don't know what's going on. It's a puzzle game with lines, that's all I know.

But they're not from Nintendo, so they automatically suck.
(Just kidding, though if you look around the internet long enough you'll find someone who says the same thing and isn't. </captain obvious>)

Holy crap man.. It's an awesome logic puzzle game where you use clues to draw a picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picross). It starts out simple then it gets a lot more bigger and detailed as you get better

Agreed. And of course Picross DS is the same pedigree. You can download classic puzzles from Mario Picross (the GB & SNES versions) and it even has remixed music. Good stuff :D

Awhile back I found a copy but knew nothing about it and was very stupid to not buy it. It was gone the following day after investigating what the hell it was. I swear, next time I find it it's mine (unless some crazy guy is selling it for 60 bajillion dollars).

Its only $20, and a great game to boot! I was glad Nintendo brought it out over here.....
I only wish they would bring out more obscure titles.
Unfortunately, I wonder if this game will sell over here? Magnetica was fun, but it didn't sell all that well. Yet, when you look at the success of games like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy, maybe this title will sell as well!

It hasn't left my DS since release day. I think it's great. I thought that the stylus controls would be great but I still revert to the d-pad for anything above 10x10. I'm aiming to have Normal Mode finished up by next week.

RetroYoungen
08-29-2007, 07:06 PM
I dunno about a difference, but I doubt they'd change much, save for the default language. I've bought it, it's ABSOLUTE crack (and that's meant in the greatest, most best-est possible way), and it's only left my DS once since I bought it (and that was today; I've had it since a day or two after launch... I had to compare the DS Mr. Driller with the Wonderswan version, so sue me ^_^ ).

I've been playing the jap version for months.. almost done with it.
That being said, I definitely like the "Free" mode better on the more complex puzzles. I love being able to test out possibilities using the testing mode and being able to undo them to your last decision point in a snap. It's too bad the regular mode doesnt allow you to do this.. but I guess it wouldn't have worked with the penalty system in that mode.
Great game.. some of the themes are awesome (the grass), while others don't work so well and are hard to see through (space). The only thing I wish it could have had is larger puzzles or even something like in Mario Picross 2 where it you solved 4 individual puzzles to solve one massive 40x40 grid or something like that.

I've been with Mario's Picross right from the start, and the DS version here a couple of days ago, and loved it until I got to the part where the grids are big enough to require zooming. The mechanic is handled clunkily and it really impedes on my overall enjoyment of the game.
Regardless, it's totally worth the $20.

You'll get used to it. I didnt like the zooming in, until I slapped myself on the forehead and realized the unzoomed puzzle just moves to the top screen. That being said, once I got used to it, I preferred looking in the zoomed in part.. it actually works out well. You glance at the top for the big picture and then focus on an area.
The important thing though I think is Do NOT use the stylus on this game. It totally sucks on the zoomed in parts. And you can't even fill in the tiny squares when you're zoomed out (it doesn't allow you to at all). But with the D-Pad, it does. Go figure.
Picross is all about the D-Pad anyway. :D

Just picked it up on Monday and am loving it. I have to agree that the puzzles that require zooming in take a while to get used but have to disagree about the stylus. It is alot easier to use then trying to use the D-Pad to fill in the squares.

Except for the fact that if you ever wanted to, you can't fill in the squares in large puzzles when you're zoomed out. You can only do it with the D-pad ;)
Despite that though, I guess it's just the Mario Picrosses that got me used to the D-pad. One button for X's, and one button for fills. Precise + nice and easy. It's D-pad all the way for me :)

I agree that the stylus is a bad idea, except for the Daily Picross portions. They require top speed, and are all small, so you can use the stylus effectively. On the 15 by 15 squares, just stick with the Dpad. It's so much more effective.

I'll have to locate my friend code this weekend (don't have my copy on me). Since I've beaten all the puzzles on it, it would be nice to have some other reason to play it. It also forced me to replay Mario's Picross (which I have, also, since beaten).
