I hadn't heard a thing about this before.

Sega has previously released its PC ports of the Sonic games in several collections, including the Sega Mega Pack (http://www.amazon.com/Activision-Sega-Mega-Pack/dp/B00014WYOK/), Sonic Action Pack (http://www.amazon.com/Activision-30613-Sonics-Action-Pack/dp/B0000507FQ/), and more, but I guess this is supposed to be a port of the recent XBox release. It's the first time Sonic 1 has been officially playable on the PC that I can recall, anyway.

I'm guessing this was a Euro-only release. Anyone familiar with it? Is the emulation quality improved over those previous PC releases?

On one of my old "warez" CDs from high school I had a version of Sonic 1 that was written for Windows 95 - one of the first Direct X games. So I think it's been released before...

That was most likely Sonic CD.

And no, neither of the Sega Smash Paks included the original Sonic either.

Yeah now that I recall all the PC versions of Sonic games never actually came with the original.

I thought the Sonic and Knuckles collection for the PC had Sonic1, 2, & 3 on it? And of course only Sonic 2 and 3 allowed the use of Knuckles. I have it somewhere nearby and will look for it in a bit.

ehh..guess not. Just pulled it up and it only has Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, or Sonic 3 and Knuckles. So not even Sonic 2 is on this.

Nope, I think it's the second. However, it is the first release onto an official CD. Have you ever heard of Real Arcade? Well, back when they first started up, they got into some sort of contract with Sega. Sega allowed them to sell for $5.00 or so official emulated titles of Genesis games, one of them being Sonic 1 (among other Sonic games). However, they're not available for purchase anymore. I'll pull up a screenshot of S&K within the emulator they had once I get the chance to redownload it (Sorry, I don't have Sonic 1, but I did play the demo once).

Yes, but it's a port of the PC port. :)
