Super Magic Drive (MD/GEN Floppy Drive)

Hey hey!
I scored this bundle last week on eBay as i thought it was about time i had the chance to play Snow Bros on my Megadrive without the price tag!

The bundle also included 2 Super Magicom devices for the SNES :)

Anyways, ive encountered some trouble with the Super Magic DRIVE (SMD)
I cannot seem to get any disks to load whatsoever!

Here is the setup im using, 100% correct, Megadrive all leads, SMD Plugged in with the Cable going to the external disk drive. The Disk Drive has its own power supply too... Its setup exactly!
Im using a Megadrive 1 as my Megadrive 2 has a 32x and this device doesnt work with it.

Loads up fine, got the GUI up there, all is looking good...
Ive put in a floppy disk with Sonic.smd (Sonic 1 Rom) to try things out, a nice simple rom which should work. However...

Once i try to initiate the disk drive, it gives me this message :(

I dont even get chance to chose the rom from the disk or anything, it makes a small disk read sound then says that message

I know for a fact that the disk drive, the disk and the power supplies are fine because the Disk Drive works on the Super Magicom (SNES Floppy Drive) flawlessly
So if im not mistaken, the problem lies within the Super Magic Drive itself.

Im pretty sure it isnt the disk im using either, ive tried others, also tried Amiga formatted disks and so on, however the same error occurs.

So does anyone have any tips? Anyone own one of these and had/not had this problem?

Absoultely any info would be greatly appreciated.
Ive had a good search online, however it seems the ratio of SNES Copier material to MD Copier Material is 999999999:1 :(

Greetings good job on that score... I have an SMD and it works pretty good, but you may have the unit with more memory so I would open up the unit and make sure that daughterboard with the memory on it is connected well. In shipping it might have jarred loose, as these were add ons to expand the memory.

My unit does not have the extra RAM board and if you do consider yourself super lucky as they are pretty much impossible to find now.. hey if anyone knows where I can get one please let me know, I have been dying to find one now for years!

I hope this helps out, if you need me to pull out my SMD (I'm going on memory, PM me and I will go through all of the menus for you)

Wow, haven;t seen one of these since...well..1991 :) Try backing up a real cartridge on a clean formatted disk and see what happens.

The SMD manual is pretty useless, it's a single sheet of paper. You aren't doing anything wrong, it could be any number of things within the copier itself and is more likely a hardware problem. If you decide to sell it, let me know :)

Your best bet is the tototek.com message boards for everyone that needs something in this thread. There's a lot of copier collectors there and you may even find your extra RAM. Tomy may even know how to make some, as he does this for the GD SF7 SNES units.

The SMDs are different beasts, there's a couple different hardware revisions of them. The original only has 8mbit and only supports 8mbit, you cannot upgrade it at all. This is probably the one that you have. It's possible that the onboard battery has leaked and caused damage to the circuit board. You'll definitely need to open it up and take a look before we can help out further.

The battery has leaked and caused green stuff on the connections :bawling:

oky i know now what the problem is.. the memory was bad
luky me i buy a broken super megadrive and this memory was oky.
it came whit 10 games for 75 euro so no los there now i have streets of rage 3 and a lot of games cool :)
And a super megadrive that works YES:bday::bday::bday:
