I have need for a replacement NES connector, but I have read that all NES connectors are not created equal. Some cheap sellers sell "refurbished" original Nintendo connectors. Others sell unreliable MCM Electronics connectors. I have seen some Gold-plated connectors, but I think they will not last long. Refurbishing my old connector is not an option, so is there a relatively trouble-free source?

MCM connectors have always worked for me.. I have seen a few of those gold connectors on Ebay, I even bought some once, but they don't seem to work any better then the regular ones. I've bought 10+ 72 connectors off of Ebay, Electric Quarter, and NintendoRepairShop and I've never had one single issue with a replacement connector.

Anyone know of a replacement source for the cartridge connector in the top-loading NES?

Top loader?
Don't know, never had one go bad.
Maybe by using a pink looking cleaner shaped cartridge by Noriko. I use isopropyl alcohol 91% and do the in out in out thing. Rinse and repeat a few times, cleaning off the cleaning cartridge with a q tip, the charcoal color needs to be minmized to nil. It can take a while but it will help the contacts.

Cleaning your games thoroughly helps too. Again:
www.electricquarter.com

He has the security bits drivers for sale, both sizes.

I put a MCM in my old NES awhile ago and it works fine for me. Holds on to game very tight though.

Yeah...too tight. I bought and installed a couple MCM's a couple years ago on my 2 toasters and it's so tough to remove a game that it actually scratched the sides of my side pocket cart.
Not worth it IMO, so i stick to my top loader.

Still kind of half-ass looking for looser fitting ones tho...cuz u can't run a game genie on a model 2 unfortunately. :(
