My 360 is in for service. Can I use my current xbox live account on my regular xbox so I can amuse myself on Halo 2?

I think you can do that, using the same Xbox gamer_id login and such, if you had a pre-existing original Xbox membership. If you signed up for a 360 membership first, Microsoft won't let you use it on the old one.
