It's that time again... automatic yearly renewal for Xbox live. But, seeing how my Xbox is thousands of miles away, I don't think I'll have much of a need for it. So I need to cancel, but here is where things get interesting.
Currently, I'm in a position where a. I don't have my Xbox on hand and b. being overseas, I don't think I can call the 800 number to cancel it myself.
So, I'm going to have someone back in the States cancel it for me, but.. I've never canceled a Live account before. The big question is, what information does Microsoft ask over the phone? Credit card info, passwords, Gamertags, anything like that? I need to know this so I can pass it along to the person who will be doing the cancelling for me. Thanks.

I'm 99% sure you don't need the Xbox on hand to cancel an account.
Why not try calling them and giving it a shot, letting them know that fact up front?

I'm fairly sure only the monthly auto renews. My 1 year subscription just cut out on me and it auto reverted to silver.

My yearly gold just expired and was automatically renewed. Could be a US/Canada difference.
To the original poster...you can call 1-800 numbers from outside the US. I did it for years without a problem.

Or possibly due to the use of a prepaid card. MS uses the credit card you originally used to buy your Live service when it's time to re-up your subscription, be it a 1-month, 3-month, or 12-month sub.
I've found that they don't do so if you've used a store-bought prepaid card.
YMMV, I guess. :monkey:

Skype or similar technologies are also an option ;)

OK, so when I call, what information should I have ready? I still don't have my original Xbox on hand.

If you want to pay insane fees, you can. Down here, Telnor charges about 60 US cents PER MINUTE if I want to call an 800 number. It's cheaper to go to a payphone across the border. :P
