View Full Version : Dreamcast S-Video cable--which brand to get?

I'd like to snag one of these from Amazon or eBay or whatever, but I've read bad reviews for some and OK reviews for others. Before I commit, which brand do you use and recommend? Or are they all really the same and the bad reviews full of beans?

On a somewhat related note, anyone have an extra Jaguar S-Video cable they'd like to sell for relatively cheap? (I'm not terribly keen on shelling out $50 for one; are they truly worth that much? If so, I'll suck it up and stick with the composite I've already got.)

Most likely the negative reviews are reflecting the fact that the Dreamcast's s-video output is not that great compared to other consoles. There's quite a bit of shimmer and bleeding. On the other hand, the positive reviews you've seen reflect the fact that even subpar s-video still looks quite a bit nicer than composite. So the reviews probably have little to do with the actual cable being reviewed, in my opinion. I've used a few different s-video cables with my Dreamcast and they all look the same to me. Get whichever one you want.

VGA definitely looks the nicest as you probably know, so you might just prefer to get a VGA box. Even if you don't plan on using VGA, most VGA boxes have s-video output as well--with the industry standard s-video connection--so it might still be worth your while to get a VGA box and then you'll have one if a situation in which you can use it ever arises.

I'm looking for one of those vga boxes, preferably one with s-video too. Any idea where I can find one? I've been looking and can only find on without the s-video.

thanks

They're sold out now, but a few years ago, I bought one of these:

The S-video jack placement is pretty poor but it can also do VGA and composite.

I guess the question I should be asking is: Is there a significant improvement with S-Video over composite on the Dreamcast? Or is it negligible, if any?

It's definitely enough of an improvement to justify getting a cable or VGA box, either of which will be pretty cheap.

Your jaw's not gonna hit the floor when you see the Dreamcast in s-video or anything, though.

this past summer i went on an obsessive overhaul of my gaming setups cables, buying the highest quality cable for each system i own. i thought the dreamcast s-video upgrade was a worthwhile purchase after watching it in action. its not the biggest jump as others have said but it is noticable. i find that all the 2d fighters i play look much more crisp and that alone justified the purchase.

besides s-video cables for the dc are cheap enough anyways so you might as well just grab one for the hell of it.
