View Full Version : Games (and/or movies) that are supposedly confusing...?

I was talking to the wife about Back to the Future 2 the other day, and I remembered that I had not seen it in the theaters because my older cousin Dave told me it was "really confusing". So I waited to see it until it was released on video. And I never found the confusing part. Maybe Dave went out for popcorn over and over, or something. All I know is that it made perfect sense to me.

This recollection then reminded of a time when my NES was a new system. I had a nearby friend who was also friends with a kid who had 5 or 6 NES games! Yay!

I had my friend call the kid up and act as an intermediary, and we found out what he had. He had Athena, Rambo, and Trojan (as well as games I already had.)

I didn't care about Athena, but Rambo sounded interesting, and I definitely wanted Trojan, being that it was one of my favorite arcade games.

The kid said that I could borrow Rambo anytime, but that I would have to wait on Trojan, because it was pretty complicated, and he would need to have enough time to show me how to play it. I insisted that I could probably figure it out (!), but he remained adamant that I would require some sort of training.

I figured the guy was just stalling in order to not give out the game. But lo and behold, a few days later when he had "time", we went over to his house again and he actually sat down and explained how to play Trojan! He was really serious!

Anyway, I can think of more than a few times where I have had people either attempt or successfully deter me from reading/playing/watching something. Don't read Dune! (didn't) Don't ready Da Vinci Code! (did anyway) Don't watch Matrix Revolutions! (did anyway), so on and so forth. I can't think of a single time where a supposedly confusing piece of entertainment actually confused me.

Maybe my acquaintences just have lower expectations for me?

How about yourself?

Interesting observation, but I have to say I do pretty much everything I want to regardless if people condone or condemn it.

Remember kiddies, its the innocent mischief makers and innocent trouble makers that live the most enriched lives, as we have so many stories to look back, share and laugh about when we are older and never regret cause we did it all!

Oh and in reference to Trojan, I totally think that person was stalling, Trojan was an arcade beat em up game by Capcom, it was really simple to play.

As for games... Breakdown on Xbox is confusing as hell! Vagrant story leaves some questions too.

The Silent hill movie left me with a few questions, but I think they did that to make a sequel. Good movie though.

If there is an end to Athena, I never found it. All I know is that the enemies suck life out of you like crazy and with the way power-ups are always appearing, your character never has a special weapon longer than 5-10 seconds. Most of the time, you end up "passing" over a power-up much weaker than the one you are currently carrying. Too bad because I thought it was a very fun game, aside from the insane difficulty level.

The movie version of Back to the Future 2 may not be that confusing but the NES game sure as hell is. As for the movie, I am sure film flub web sites break down a whole bunch of continuity errors or goofs in BTTF2 but it is pretty easy to follow when you watch it on-screen, assuming you saw the first movie and knew the storyline already.

I had a friend sit down and explain Robocop to me. He didn't think I could follow the plot. This was when the movie first came out. I was little, but come on! I did like the movie though.

Usually games, movies or tv shows that require too much thinking tend turn me off... I think if you are going to make a tricky game or movie, you better be a damn good director/producer to ensure the person playing your product gets involved without getting frustrated...

Just like how novel-film adaptations are almost always worse [I'm thinking you, Jurassic Park], it's only natural that film-game adapations are much worse.

Confusion and what not can often result from missing plot elements, a condensed storyline, and other restrictions.

Play throught Metal Gear Solid 2, and I can say with 100% certainty that you will be confused. In fact, you would probably still be confused about some things even after your fifth play through.

Play it, I dare you. (It's about a 12 hour game on average I would say)

If he didn't say it I was going to. ;)

The Carnage Heart games are too confusing for me. Maybe a professional computer programmer could play them, but I can barely make my robots not run into stuff.

You bet that one was a letdown. Many people who never read the Jurassic Park book do enjoy the movie, until they read the book. I should know because I did see the movie a year or two before reading the book. Looking back, I would have loved to see it turn out more like the book.

At least the Genesis game bothered to include the raft scene............
