Well I've really stopped collecting the last few years. But I was on ebay the other day and came across Final Fantasy VII auctions. Holy cow! They printed a butt load of these things and its getting that much? Heck it was even a greatest hits title.

Then I thought of another RPG I had called Suikoden (I and II) and sheesh II alone is getting a lot.

Is there something I don't know? What other PSX rpgs are getting big dollars? Now I wish I had been buying more when Gamestops/Funcolands used to have used psx games.

FFVII is an anomaly. Yeah, you might have been able to stock up on GH copies of VII a couple years ago and make a small killing today, but that's probably the only title.

The RPGs that fetch dollars today were usually full price when they came out, they rarely hit the bargain bin, and then they maintained or increased in value as soon as they were OOP. In other words, Valkyrie Profile was $50 until it disappeared from store shelves.... there was no moment you could have scooped it for cheap. In the case of Suikoden II for example, I remember that being rare the year it came out.

I think you'd also find that FFVII is the only game where a common GH copy will really sell. I chalk it up to its very wide popularity: there is no shortage of softcore gamers who want it, and they don't care about it "GH" unlike your average RPG nerd. With every other RPG, and every other RPG's fanbase, you probably won't be so lucky.

Yeah its the fact that the movie came out more than anything thats what is boosting sales, another example of this is Silent Hill many people want the game now, because they saw the subpar movie and thought it was gods gift to earth.

I never got a chance to play the Silent Hill games but some of my friends did and they enjoyed them. I saw the movie when it came out and found it entertaining, even plan on buying it at some point. It's a matter of opinion (as always) if it was good or not but overall most people I know liked it too. Maybe it's just a backlash on the gamming community that believe the game deserved a godly epic movie.

As for the PS RPGs being over-priced, I think it's due to not only movie releases but also the people buying them whom are either:
A) Adults that grew up playing these games and want to revisit the classic game now that it's back in the popularity.
B) Kids that heard lots of hype on these games and want them to play on their PS2 or PS3.

As far as Suikoden II goes, a few months after it came out I saw it on clearance at Target for $20, but I already had a copy...everybody was playing FF8 at the time, I guess... Damn fine game BTW...

Cheers,
Ben

Which is kind of funny since that is the game that made me finally stop liking Final Fantasy after being a fan of it for so many years. X_x

Yeah about the silent hill thing, just play the series and you will begin to compare the movie to the game. Its just plain out innavoidable, but the movie is not all that bad, its just very grotesque as compared to the game which are gory yet rely on the sense of loneliness to make the game scary.

The other reason good PSX games fetch a high price is that they're gettingd old(FF7 is 10 years old) and discs get mishandled and scratched up. Try finding any good PSX game in the wild. It doesn't happen.

I replayed FFVII recently and I would pay $40 for that game today (I put in 70 hrs or so) new and I think that is what is keeping some of the PS RPGs at decent levels today, they were just good.

Oh, I have no doubt and I plan on getting them sometime, but for now I'm screwed because for the oddest reason I have only seen Silent Hill 3 in the past 2 years or more. It's freaky that a massly produced game just doesn't pop up around here, but I'll snatch it the day I find it (and it's not over priced).

That's exactly it. Silent Hill is a creepy little game series that's much loved. Silent Hill the movie was a creepy little movie. What kind of magic did ppl expect when it made the jump to film? Like it was going to ooze meaning and importance and awesomeness?

No. The game was about a man looking for his girl, and it is creepy. The movie was about a woman looking for her girl, and it was creepy. It was a faithful adaptation, but when something is in movie form and being watched by everyone, it's a little harder to convince yourself that this 'little horror tale' is incredibly meaningful and important.

I think the writing was on the wall when every SH fan was apparently very pretensious about the games.

NES is on the way out as the popular system of choice to collect for, and PSX is on the way in. Watch for prices of one to keep dropping and the other to keep climbing.

PS RPGs have generally been pretty pricey out here in the boondocks [the PAL regions, as in]. Especially those that have never been released here officially [Xenogears, Chrono Cross, etc].

We did get the Suikodens, though, except they're near impossible to find.

As long as you're not paying retail price, it's not unreasonable to pay at least what the game cost new for an older title - if you want it.

OVER retail is what I consider "pricey" for an older RPG.

I'm glad I decided to pretty much complete my PS1 want list immediately after getting my PS2 in 2004. I was snagging games like Silent Hill, Suikoden and FF7 for $10-15 from local shops. I sold a few excess copies on Ebay for only a few dollars more. At the time, Valkyrie Profile was going for about $50 on Ebay, but I had decided (and still feel) that it wasn't a game I would enjoy.

The only game I was unable to find locally was Suikoden 2, which I ended up getting mint and complete from Ebay for $70. Sadly, my local game shop had just sold their last used copy literally a week before I started collecting PS1 games. Of course, it hasn't shown up since.

I've found Tactics Ogre at a Replay's last year. You just have to look at non-mainstream stores now. Pawn shops are a good place to check.

As for the Rarity and Price increase? It's because gamestop and such do not carry them anymore, so for many people ebay is their only option.

wrong screen, sorry! But while I'm here, I'll reiterate a tad...

Basic economics, IMHO. The old supply vs demand vs availabilty. Which also is proving true that the market will bear what people are willing to pay.
