So far it's working great, but I don't want to hurt the CD drive. Is there a good chance that standing a PSone vertically like this would hurt it?

Yeah I would imagine that gravity is not working in your favor there. I would advise against it because it will most likely scratch your games.

Hm.. i doubt it. The only thing i could think of is that the motor for the laser would wear out faster because it takes more power to push the laser upwards than sideways. It might take years before it takes any affect tho, just guessing here hehe.

Is this tate mode for shooters or something?

Yeah. DonPachi is practically unplayable outside tate, since the screen scrolls whenever you move forward or back and makes you run into bullets.
So, one against and one sort of for. I'll play something else until I get some more opinions.
look at PS2, you can play it both ways anyway, and all the new consoles play that way, so i wouldn't worry.

I've done this quite a few times with my PSone + LCD over the years...no problems to report so far.

I've never believed in standing a video game system on it's side even if it was built to do just that. Even if it does not harm the system/games, there is always a chance it will get knocked over.

It'll be fine unless you knock it over.

I can't believe Donpachi would be playable on that little screen, tate or not.

You'd be surprised. Those PSone LCD's are incredible. I would like to get an actual TV when I move to a bigger apartment, but this little setup has worked surprisingly well for me with my limited space.

I used to have to run my PS1 like that to read some games :P

It's fine that way. As stated before, PS2 allows you to play with the system vertically or horizontally and I've taken MANY PS1 and PS2's apart, there's no significant difference in the way the lasers move. My own PS2 has been vertical ever since I got it on launch day. I've also had various PS1 systems running on their side just to get them to play at all, which should tell you something.
Don't sweat it. Play the game the way it *feels* right. Your PSOne won't let you down.

Ding!
Don't knock it over or change its position when its running and it'll be just fine.

They sell a screen that hooks to the PS like that and it can turn horizontal or vertical, no need to stand the system on the side. Get one of those

Does anyone have any info on this screen?
