I have a Genesis multi tap made by Performance called Super Multi-Play. I can't find anything about it online. Is there anything special about it or is it just a regular multi tap?

I could use some info on this too. I have a small genny multiatap made by EA. Does that mean it is only compatible with EA games that utilize multitap? Gauntlet comes to mind...
Maybe they are all the same? I don't play sports titles much, so I have no idea.

There are indeed compatibility issues between the Sega and EA multitaps. Perhaps this was the start of the rivalry between the two companies, who knows.
Did they ever release that Genesis cartridge with the controller ports built in? I think Codemasters was working on it.

codemasters DID release a tennis game on its J-Cart format here. they also put out at least 3 micro machines games and i think a few other titles in the uk and europe that utilized this feature.

This multi tape is still in shrinkwrap (for the most part), so I can't get it out to test its compatibility.

The EA '4-Way Play' multitap indeed functions only with EA games. Not too sure about any others, but I'd imagine they'd all work with non-EA games.
The following games were released on Codemasters 4 player 'J-carts':
Pete Sampras Tennis
Pete Sampras Tennis '96 (PAL only)
Micro Machines 2 (PAL only)
Micro Machines '96 (PAL only)
Micro Machines Military (PAL only)
Super Skidmarks (PAL only)
(the 1st Micro Machines was on a standard Codemasters cart)
<blatant plug> I'm currently working on a comprehensive PAL Megadrive gamelist, a first (sketchy) draft of which was added to the DP archives a few days back. Check it out kids!</blatant plug>

... and you can look all of them up at www.GenesisCollective.com, with pictures of the carts. Pete Sampras Tennis even shows the circuit board for those who want to see inside! http://www.genesiscollective.com/ShowPage.php?GameLink=640
