Hey guys

I wanted to know how the convention is from a Buying/Selling standpoint. I might be coming from Japan and I'll bring a lot with me to sell to cover the cost of the trip, but since I've not been to one of these conventions before I don't know to what extent commerce takes place. I thought I'd come here and ask what experiences others had in the past.

I was thinking that I could bring quite a few Japanese retro consoles, different types. Mostly the software would focus on more famous titles and Neo Geo CDs/carts. I could probably offer a shipping service for people who don't want to take stuff back on the plane with them.

Anyway, I'm just taking stabs in the dark. Any tips or advice?

Thanks,
Eric

Eric, usually around 1,000-1,500 people attend the show, and from a Seller's standpoint, if you have goods like this, there is great chance they will sell because people come to this show to BUY BUY BUY. Billy Galaxy's Japanese friend came, and he cleaned up with sales. Usually, a lot of things end up being discounted on Sundays, so keep that in mind.

I know that was one of the highlights of my trip in 2K5, buying a ton of Japanese goodies from the Billy Galaxy booth.

Thanks for the reply.

How do console sales stack up with software sales?

I never been to CGE before, but ususally PC Engine systems, Famicom systems, and other popular import systems in Japan are usually popular in the US.

To sell a sysytem, you must have a lot of games for THAT system. Not all of them must be common and cheap in Japan, perhaps some hard to find titles.

For the Neo-Geo CD titles, you're most likely going to clean house with the software side of things (it's still popular with people).

Personally if I'm going to the show (most likely I will), then I would buy out most of your NGCD titles (if I don't have them). Having a good cheap copy of Ironclad always helps. ;)

fighter17: This expo is a lot different than what you are thinking. He does not need to sell a lot of games per system. Boxed systems, regardless of what they are, tend to sell decently at CGE.

Glad to see we have people showing up to this years EXPO!

Just was wondering who they plan to buy from. Are all the 2005 sellers showing up, or is it a SECRET?

I don't think they even know yet everyone that is going to get a booth. They have not announced pricing for booths themselves!

Yeah, I am really interested in knowing the pricing for booths this year (hoping it is lower than $400).

I'm hoping they keep the "trading" room again. That was great for sellers like me with only a couple of tubs...

I wasn't able to find any information about reserving a booth....? Has that not been posted yet or did I just miss it?

Also, what is provided in the booth? An outlet, chair, table?

Thanks!

Agreed. That was a highlight of last CGE for both the GF and I. We didn't have much to sell and maybe broke even with the hourly rate, but it was fun setting up shop and shooting the shit (unless you're talking about some other trade room and not the "swap area").

Japan-Games: As a buyer, I spent 99.9% of my time outside of the swap throwing wads of cash at resellers. I can't imagine affordable import hardware/software not going over big at CGE. Personally speaking, you'll probably end up with a good chunk of my cash. =P

Is it unreasonable to think that Sellers will get prices that are higher than eBay but less than online stores? It's about $3,000 in costs to get me and my products into a booth at CGE....and lord knows I can't afford to do it for less than what I'm already getting on eBay...heh.

I have never been to CGE, but I am going this year with plenty of money to spend, so here is my take. There are some things I will be willing to drop alot of money on, around ebay/yahoo japan auction prices, but those things would be mainly rarer items that I have been weary of buying until now. (basically I'm using CGE as an excuse to spend money) But more common items I can probably manage to get for a lower than ebay price if I wait around, so there is no rush. As an example, I would certainly consider Card Fighters Clash 2 at $150, but I probably wouldn't want to spend more than $10 on densha de go for NGPC.

As far is your $3k in travel costs, I would suggest asking other sellers who have gone in the past how much they have sold. I don't know if they will share, but you might as well try.

Thanks for the info.

For example, take a Neo Geo AES system. The ones in Japan sell for about $150-$175 boxed on eBay. When you add shipping it's about $225 to $275 depending on what seller you use.

I was hoping to get a price between of about $200 to $225 at CGE. I figured the buyer would still come out ahead plus he can actually see the merchandise before buying. But if people know they can get a boxed system for $150 on eBay and come hoping to best that price and pick it up for $130, then I'm about to lose a bundle...heh.

If you're going to be doing that, then I think we can do business with a good number of imports.
