At the risk of starting a flame war, who thought columns on the Genesis was better than Tetris on pretty much any other system. I have always liked columns better, dunno why, except for maybe the two player mode where a chain reaction can completely change the direction of the game.

i think tetris is a better game in terms of gameplay, its frantic while columns is relaxing. i think the two are polar opposites. and compliment each other well

Bust-A-Move > Puyo Puyo > Tetris > Columns
But I love Columns so they're all winners in my book. :)
You don't hear much chatter about Wordtris...

I commend you for being brave enough to say you like Columns better than Tetris.
Unfortunately, I cannot agree. Tetris and Dr. Mario are still my two favorite puzzle games, even after all these years. Super Puzzle Fighter gets an honorable mention, and Tetris Attack wasn't too bad either.

I have Columns on the Sega Genesis 6-pak cart, but as much as I've tried, it doesn't keep me hooked like Tetris does, and I rarely ever play more than one round at a time.

Columns came after Tetris. Same as stuff like Dr. Mario and Yoshi's Cookie. Unlike fighting games, sports games, driving games and action games, puzzle games do not usually "evolve" and "get better." Just my opinion.
If someone were to say Columns is better than Tetris, then that would mean that it could be argued that stuff like Dr. Mario or Yoshi's Cookie are also better than Tetris.
Tetris is still the best. Next thread, please :)

Columns FTW, Ive been playing it an awful lot lately and have managed to eclipse my higher scores of many moons ago.
The Genesis/MD version is still the best, ive been trying the sega ages version
out and its good but not as good as the original, damn i wasted
more of my childhood on this game then any other, the Master System version and GG version are good too.

It depends on the mood! I like tetris when I'm in the mood for some sweaty fingers.

Awesome puzzle game there, one of my favorites too.

Once Dr. Mario got to be too easy, even at the fastest level, I started playing drinking Dr. Mario. Take a swig for every level completed. It really ramps up the difficulty.

I've never much liked Columns (or Puyo Puyo, incidentally). I used to like Tetris a lot, but in the last five years or so I can't really play more than a round or two at once. Tetris Attack, though...2-player vs with someone at about your skill level, that just takes the freakin' cake.
I've had single rounds go as long as 20 minutes on that, throwing garbage back and forth. Some of the most intense vs. gaming I've ever had.
Tetrisphere is one of my favorites on the 1P side.
Anyway, the battle variations on Tetris or Columns are the only ones I can really play nowadays...Tetris Battle Gaiden on the SFC, or UPP on the PlayStation. There's something to be said for turning Columns upside-down...
EDIT: Completely forgot about Exchanger. I can't stand Magical Drop but Exchanger is just fun as hell.

I find Columns to be too long and boring. I no longer have the cart, so I bought the game on Virtual Console for the Wife (she's into puzzle games, so it's something we can do together). Even our very first game of columns felt like it lasted for eternity. Tetris has a difficulty level that advances faster, and the gameplay is more entrancing for me. I find myself wanting to die in Columns, but sometiems it seems that will never happen.

I've always loved Columns more than Tetris... probably because it doesn't require as much thought to do well at it... you can usually just drop gems at random and still survive long enough to get very far into it... and it gets just as frantic as Tetris does, but it takes alot longer for it to get really frantic... probably why those who prefer Tetris don't care for Columns as much... less thought required and a slower rate of increasing the pace makes it seem less frantic and less challenging, but it's really not... if you're skilled enough to do well at it without just dropping gems at random, then it's every bit as frantic and challenging as Tetris is, but I have to admit that I get bored with it after a while because it just goes on and on forever... Tetris does too, and I get bored with it also, but not as much as I do with Columns... or at least that's the case with the original version... later versions are far more interesting...

both games, on handhelds.
Personal winner: Tetris. I didn't have a Game Gear these days.

Columns is better!
I never got into Columns. The game just seems random to me. Obviously I can see where I should put the next block, but I never managed to build up some strategies as I did in Tetris (i.e. try to get a Tetris....). But maybe that's just because I had been playing Tetris for about 18 months before I started my first game of Columns....

Comie hating column haters. Columns is a pretty relaxin puzzle game. Super columns is good'' when going up levels pyramids in the background start forming and become cities.Plus I love the music in these games.

I actually preferred Klax back in the day (and the Lynx version was amazing). Tetris and Columns were fun too, but I thought they were a bit too simple. Columns III is fairly complex, and probably my favorite.

I never could get into Columns. It always felt like it was just random and completely without strategy. Just drop pieces insanely and "ooh" over the big chains.
On the other hand, games like Klax, Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Fighter sort of take too much strategy for me, so I can't relax with them like I do with Tetris.
Tetris is perfect because it requires some strategy, so keeps part of your mind engaged, but it's a very narrow strategy, so you can relax the other 98% of your brain. It's a great sort of meditation.
There are some other puzzlers that I like a lot--Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon, Baku Baku Animal, Zoo Keeper and lots more--but Tetris is beyond them. It's really on another level along with the great trance-inducing video games of all time like Pac-man, Tempest, Rez and so on.

Both are fun and have their redeeming qualities, but I'd have to say that Columns was slightly easier and more fun. Not meaning to discredit Tetris and its many spin-offs, (Quite a few good.) but I'd have to say Columns for the win.

I've loved Columns ever since I bought the SMS version back in the day. Actually, I like the SMS version more than the Genesis version. I like Tetris as well (and Klax too), but Columns is the best puzzle game.
