I know that there are no direct sequels in the series with the exception of FFX and FFX-2, but is there a best order in which to play the games? I will be making use of the new releases for the GBA and DS rather than the original NES and SNES versions. Thanks.

Well, seeing as how most of the games are unrelated, the order you play them in really doesn't matter.

If you're someone who hasn't played any of the 2D Final Fantasies before though and plans to do so, I guess I could suggest FF4 and FF6 to start with, seeing as how those are the most popular, and pretty easy to get into.

I would play them in reverse order if you're not someone who is used to 8 bit RPGs.

Hell, I mean it seriously does not matter so if you want to really go for an adventure why don't you put all of the names in a jar and draw out one at a time.

It looks like it doesn't matter too much which one I play. I have already played VII, IX, and part of X. The only ones I don't have are XI, and XII. Since I tend to like the older ones, I guess I should work my way through them. Just wasn't sure if there was some prefered order.

in terms of quality, i think the best are VII, VI, XII (in no particular order). although everyone will disagree with me.

Your list isn't to bad there I can't disagree per se, but I would only suggest leaving XII for a rainy day that one can be quite frustrating at times.

Play them in the order they were numbered. You'll see a progression in how the game changes in various aspects.
