I was wondering if anyone's ever seen one of these. First a brief story.. I like things to "match".. so when I bought my PS2 years back I searched high and low for an official black Sony PSX (as in Playstation 1) memory card for it; then an official black digital (no sticks) controller for those games which didn't require analog (the sticks just get in the way for games like.. Culdcept IMO). I eventually found both.

Sooo.. when I got my little PSOne.. I had the same problem. I started looking for a white Sony PSX memory card (to match) and a white Sony digital controller. Found them.. but as you might guess.. they never really matched exactly on account of early Sony white stuff being somewhat "bright" white and the PSOne being off-white (I think the official Sony color term is "bone"). Fast forward about a year or so and one night I'm surfing evilBay and I see a "PSOne Sony memory card" being sold out of all places.. Turkey. The picture was blurry and kind of crappy and it was only like $10 US so I bought one and waited.

When I got it I was surprised because I never saw one of these in the states. I doubt very much that it's counterfeit either (even from Turkey) because there's way too much in this card for someone to fake and turn around to sell for so little. It looks EXACTLY like any other Sony brand memory card except it's the exact color of a PSOne. It comes in a very tiny little silver box with the PSOne symbology on it and looks like a miniature version of the early PSOne boxes. It also has a plastic case and the case and card have Sony all over it. The little manual/insert is also professionally printed with Sony logos and serial/part #s. Lastly.. in the spot where any other Sony PSX memory card has the word "Playstation" on it.. it has been replaced with "PSOne" and the newer PSX style logo. This is a legit Sony card.. no doubt.

I've tried to take pictures of this thing before and I've been meaning to ask about it for ages; but it's so small that I can never get a clear one.. and I keep forgetting.

I was just wondering if anyone's ever seen one of these? I'm not saying it's "uber-rare" or priceless.. I'm just curious.

Come on Papa Stu.. enlighten me ;).

I will have a look through my memory cards tonight and see if I have one like the one you are talking about. I think I have got one of these but am not too sure.

You can't see much from the picture because it's in it's little box HERE (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/emdeesee/Collection/PSXhrdwr.jpg) but it's just to the left of the pocketstation.

Ooo not seen one like that before. I thought you meant it was boxed like the PSOne in this picture here (http://www.defconsoft.co.uk/pmwiki/uploads/Hardware/HSpryoConsoleBits.jpg).

Do you by chance need a PSone dual analog controller in it's original box? I'm eBaying one right now. ;)

No.. maybe you'd know though.. at one time.. didn't PSOne units come in a silver box like the one in my picture? I seem to remember seeing them but I could be wrong. The boxes were silver and had the "X,O,square, triangle" symbols on them.

If I was still collecting I would; but at the moment.. I'm trying to get rid of all this stuff. Have you seen my thread in the B&S forum? I'm selling my ENTIRE collection.. everything post Xbox,GCN,PS2 era.. in one fell swoop; gigantic, enormous, humongous lot. All the stuff in the picture is a small part of it.

Yes they most certainly did as seen here (http://www.defconsoft.co.uk/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Hardware.PSOne)

Yup! That's the one! The box for the card looks like a tiny miniature version of that.

You rang?

Sony did release a 'Bone' colored Playstation memory card. It came in the usual short blister pack with a silver insert. I have one, but I can't seem to find my PSOne cards at the moment (i'm thinking that they are back in California). I do know that Dangerboy has one so worst case scenario we can still get you a picture of one for comparison. I however don't remember the card saying PSOne instead of PlayStation.

Trust me, these cards are easier to fake than you think. I've seen ones in almost official packaging (just a few small typo's in the fine print and Copyright/Trademark snafu's on the package let me know that it was a fake that I was dealing with. There are 2 give aways for it being a fake. First is how it fits in the memory card slot, it does, but they are 'tight' and it just feels off. The other way is to open the card up and look at the board. Fake insides look nothing like official cards.

Yeah.. but that's my point.. WHY would anyone go to such great lengths to make the little box, print up a instruction leaflet (BTW.. I checked.. no typos anywhere and the sheet is VERY sharply, cleanly printed).. put it in a case with the Sony logo on it (Did I mention that there's a card sticker as well? With the SONY name on it?) and then silkscreen the card with the PSOne moniker.. just to turn around and sell it for $7 ($3 S&H made $10)? Even from Turkey?

But now you've got my curiosity going. It's already packed up and sealed away in one of my barrels for my lot sale.. but I'll dig it out and try and take some pictures (maybe my old failed pics are somewhere as well.. kinda' blurry). It's also got a part number on it and in the manual.. so I'll try and retrieve it. Undoubtedly.. this thing was never released in the states.. but oftentimes we all know that means nothing.

Because these cards cost next to nothing to make. And if you get 100 of them for 50 bucks, sell each for 7 your making money hand over fist. The one fake I had was totally wrapped and to the unsuspecting eye looks like a real card. The card stock was damn close too. I know where some of the older PSOne cards still are, i'll see about getting one or two and looking into this a bit more.

When I had a PSOne, I looked everywhere for the damn color that matched. All I could find was the bright white. I ended up just getting the colored ones. None of them say "PSOne" of course. Maybe the "PSOne" versions in the little box were only at launch (which is when the PSOne came in that silver box).

Could be.. but I'm beginning to believe that mine is legit.. and a Japanese release. I haven't dug it out of storage yet.. but looking at the old blurry pictures I found and posted jogged my memory. As I recall.. that instruction sheet is in Japanese. Those posting that their's came in a "blister pack" are from Europe. I've never seen one in either kind of packaging here in the states, and we all know how the Japanese enjoyed this kind of special stuff. Also.. one CAN see the word PSOne on my cart where Playstation normally was.. but all the other design elements are exactly the same as the older cards.

On a side note.. that white wireless controller pictured? It's the new revised version of the Fountech Airstyle.. which has been renamed the SurfWave and has the Sega logo on it rather than the AirStyle one. They're radio controlled rather than IR, and now operate at 2.4Ghz instaed of 900Mhz. They work MUCH better than the older airstyles. Very nice.. though it's also a bright white as well.

Oh, Scorch, now that you attach those pictures I gotta say those are really familiar to me. They are still currently sold all over Malaysia and Thailand. In fact, all of the PS1 memory cards i've seen on sale here in recent years look like those.

I would surmise that they are not legit released items, just by virtue of being sold in Malaysia in Thailand (legit 1st party accessories being nearly impossible to find here). I'll try to run by one of the stores selling them tonight and ask to find out for sure. But the 3rd party manufacturers here sometimes go to great length to make their products look like legitimate products!

Ok.. Ok.. Ok.. you guys are going to make me do it, aren't you ;) ? I'll dig the card back out of storage tomorrow. I'll open it up and compare it to one of the many stateside bought GENUINE cards I have. I'll try and get even sharper pictures of the entire thing.. including the instruction sheet. I'll grab the part # off it as well.. but still.. YOU'RE going to have a hard time convincing me otherwise. I STILL don't see why someone would go to SUCH great lengths to "professionally", clearly, accurately and I dare say.. "high-qualitywise" produce such a complete and extensive packaging and presentation.. just to sell for a few bucks. Not to mention the exact color match. There may be a lot of poor people in Asia.. but come on.

Lastly.. once I have the part number.. I'll simply e-mail Sony and ask them. I remember once years ago when I e-mailed them a question about what PSX models came with the "light-show" feature.. they were very friendly and more than happy to answer.. maybe I'll get a definitive answer again.

Looks pretty cool to me! Should be easy enough to tell if it's legit or not simply by opening it up. If the chips say Sony or ATMEL, I think it's safe to say it's an official Sony product. There were some pics taken of the insides of Sony and 3rd party memory cards in this thread....

Well.. I'll be damned.. it's a pirate. Why didn't one of you guys tell me there's more to these little bastards than two screws? ;) I just annihilated a legit card out of frustration! Anyways.. after finding the tabs inside the legit card I tried to simply pry open the end of the PSOne card just enough to peer inside and the first thing I saw was the black blob.

Damn thing SURE looks legit though. The entire instructions are in Japanese and there's SONY all over everything (even molded into the little clear case!). I'll give them credit for the little silver box too.. it's perfect and the writing on it IS in English. Has a part # of SCPH-1020.. just like all the others.

Only thing that might have given it away on the outside is that the sticker on the back is in Japanese.. but I'd suspect that official cards sold in Japan are too. Then if you look at the raised molded lettering on the back where it says MEMORY CARD Sony Computer Entertainment Inc .. etc. the molded lettering is not quite as defined and sharp as the legit card.

Other than that.. it's indistinguishable from a real one. Sure had me fooled! I still say I'm impressed! Someone went to a lot of trouble. Card stickers, a SONY embossed little case, the box.. it's still quite a presentation.

Thanks for everyone's help.. another mystery solved.

Thanks Scorch, saves me the trouble of buying one only to destroy it and find out its fake. You have just earned yourself your daily 'Good Work Fella' award.

Sony did indeed release a memcard to match the PSone's colour. I can post a pic later but it cam ein the usual PSone style packaging and in a blister pack. I( bought one a few months ago at Zellers.

I still don't believe that there ever was the exact PSOne color in memory cards. When I was looking for it, the only colors I could get from the Sony website were grey, white, blue, red, and green. These are also the only colors I even found on Amazon, TRU, Ebay, etc. To save my sanity, I bought the blue, red, and green ones (called "island blue, "crimson" and "emerald"). so I didn't even have to think about them matching the system. Hopefully, these three cards hold all of my future saves (45 slots should be enough for ~25 games), otherwise I will go crazy about which color to get for the fourth card.

Get a black one. I have a black one and I KNOW it's genuine. The cool thing is it matches your PS2 when you plug it into it.
