I have no idea where to have post this... it kind of goes with the original forum because the ps1 / saturn might have something. But anyway... What do you guys consider the scariest videogames of all time to be?

Barney's Hide & Seek Game gave me nightmares...
Let's just say this... These are the games my wife won't let me play if she is home.
The Suffering (xbox)
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (dreamcast)
Fatal Frame (xbox)

Friday the 13th on the NES was damn scary, considering that Jason often popped out of nowhere when you least expected it. No matter where you were, on the path, on the water or in a house. It may seem stupid today but let someone who has never played it before try it for the first time in the dark. The thing that rattled my nerves the worst was that every once in a great while, from what I recollect, he could show up in a house even when his energy bar wasn't on the screen (which usually indicated he was inside). This was usually if you actually pursued him on the path, or he pursued you, and he was in between stops with the kids or counselors.
Sure, Friday the 13th doesn't scare quite like Resident Evil or Silent Hill but the way the music suddenly changed and Jason just appeared on the screen to attack you still gets to me once in awhile.

For me, it'll always be Clock Tower: The First Fear.
I don't see how people can possibly get scared in any game that features heavy weaponary. Surprised maybe, but a real horror fan knows.

I second Friday the 13th for NES. That game is scarier than RE. Slient Hill2 is pretty freaky.

Condemned for the 360.
I really should have played more of that when I rented it.
As for requirements, I'm more a fan of things with a creepy atmosphere or ambiance as opposed to those that rely more on cheap 'jump' scares over and over again, more of a 'Lovecraftian' approach, if you will. That said, I remember jumping pretty excitedly when the first of the zombie dogs came crashing through the windows in that lonely hallway in the first Resident Evil. I must say, the whole "evil children" (especially the singular long-dark-haired female variety) gimmick has worn itself completely and thoroughly out. In what little I played of FEAR, I just sort of shook my head whenever a 'spooky kid' was on-screen. Time for a new cliche.

Seconded. Fatal Frame 2 and System Shock 2 are pretty scary too, but nothing compared to CT.

Don't know about the scariest video game of all time, but as a kid I was scared of that Demon looking head that said "Beware, I LIVE!" in Sinistar. I dunno for some odd reason that always unnerved me, seems stupid now but back then I hated it. Made my hair stand on end. CLOCK TOWER on the Saturn (iirc) was pretty fucked up IMO.

My dad raised me on monster movies & Sci Fi (in the 60's kids.. ;) ). Therefore.. I grew up totally desensitized to horror and being scared. To this day.. there's only one movie that ever made me "jump", and up until recently.. no game. But I broke down last year and finally bought Silent Hill 2. I CAN'T finish that game.. 'nuff said.
I DO think Pyramid Head is the coolest guy since Pinhead in the Hellraiser movies though.

How could we, on a retro-gaming site, forget a game like Project Firestart? If you haven't played it already, then do yourself a favor and grab a C64 emulator and this game. You'll be switching disks relatively often as the game is huge, but the atmosphere this game creates, especially considering the hardware running it, is astounding. Some jump scares here and there I admit, but at points it really will have you second guessing whether or not you want to open that next door, even if you do have a laser rifle in hand. I suggest playing it night, by yourself, for the best effect.

Some of the insanity effects in that game are pretty neat. I'm still hoping for a sequel to that game.
Silent Hill (PSX) is probably the scariest one I've played, although there were a couple of areas in Killer 7 (GCN) that had me jumping.
Kuon for PS2 has a rather creepy ambiance - there's nothing like old-school Japanese historical horror games. :)

"D" on the PS and Saturn too I think. Alien vs. Predator on the Jaguar was scary as hell back in the day. Oh and of course...YOSHI'S STORY!!! Haha...Just kidding.

I'll have to back that one up there, at least at the time. Being 6 or 7 and seeing the words "You and all of your friends are dead" is a very frightening thing to read on a game over screen.
For me it'll have to be the first two Silent Hill games. The first one scared the shit out of me back when it came out, it was probably one of the most intense gaming experiences I ever had. The second one was scared me on a completely different level, the cell scene with Maria still gives me chills to this day.
The original Alone in the Dark is also up there and really got to me when I first played it. It's a shame I never really hear anyone say much about the game, especially since it created the survival horror genre. I'm really surprised there hasn't been a re-make of it yet, then again the interest in the series isn't very hight anymore.

Lol, I went into a panic on that too. I jumped up like !@#$, what the hell did I do?!?!? Felt so retarded afterwards, especially since I even READ about that sanity effect online and it still got me.

At first "7th guest" was kinda creepy, until I realized that nobody was really out to get you.
I always thought the lack of other living things in "Myst" was really bizarre, and downright spooky.

my vote goes to the Resident Evil series and Silent Hill series
also, Haloween for the 2600 was surprisingly scary

I agree that 7th guest spooked me abit...especially since I was so young when I played it.
But I have a personal favorite that no one has actually stated yet and that's Silent Hill 4: The Room. Most disagree and think 4 is lame, but I take a different stand. I love the SH series and have played through all (except 1, because I can't get a hold of one) and wasn't really scared by anything until this newest one (4). Yes, SH2 had obliviated Maria in the cell which was bizarre and Pyramid Head, and 3 had the creepy blood covered bunnies, and the crazy room that fills with blood in the mirror, but 4 had that and more as far as I'm concerned:
**Spoilers, if you haven't played it**
- How about the gal that ended up massacred right in the beginning? That has to be on the same level or higher as the Maria cell inccident right there.
- Ghosts that go through walls, got to be honest every time I hear that static noise and can't see the ghost I get freaked out.
- Not to mention the other deaths in the game...poor guy being lit on fire, another by the electric chair; all as you're watching.
- Let's not forget abused children locked in cells with people peeping in on them and keeping tabs.
- Few other parts that creep me out is when the ghosts invade your house (pair of shoes you can see in the kitchen, another messing with the window), the shadow of a little kid crying in your bedroom closet, and that freaked-out giant head in the hospital room.
I know most dislike 4 for being different from the rest of them and not having the same SH elements...but even so this one spooked me the most. Despite 4 being different 2 and 3 definitely have their lame parts/downsides.
I hated how thick the fog was in SH2...had to be 2ft away from anything to see it and the other characters involved were just about pathetic and if anything dulled the creepiness of the game.
SH3 was not what I was expecting at all...I felt the monstrosities were a bit ridiculous (giant club legged mutants and those small 2-legged things) and that a lot of rooms entered were just empty and wasteful of time & space.
I realize that I may have ranted and rattled on for a bit too long, but I hope someone out there might agree or be reasonable enough to understand my point of view.

Doom 3 becomes much less scary once you learn to walk through doors backwards...

I enjoyed SH4 more than SH3, mainly because I just couldn't get into SH3 and forced myself to finish the game. I will have to disagree about the ghosts tho, they turned from creepy to damn right annoying by the end of the game. The haunted apartment got annoying as well, since you'd end up losing half your life because you stood too close to the haunted TV.
Other than that SH4 was great and got depressing by the end when you find the letters.

I too like the creepy kind of horror as opposed to the jump-scares. I haven't played a great many horror games, but Eternal Darkness was really good. After playing the game through the third time to get the full ending (I don't know if you can really call it a "good" ending), I had to get out of the house for a bit, go for a drive.
Well, if you've played the game you know that when you're in between stages, in the house controlling the girl, the time of day is twilight. Everything coming through the windows is that weak, golden light. I think that in some rooms you could even look out the windows and see the silhouettes of the dead trees in the distance.
Well, I left the house and went for a drive to clear the creep out of my head, and it just so happened that it was twilight outside. The light conditions were exactly like they were in the game. There were even dead trees to provide that creepy silhouette. Needless to say, my drive didn't help too much... LOL

The only game that really scared me was Alien vs. Predator on the Jaguar. I played it late one night with the lights off, sleepy and not paying all that much attention to details. I was playing as the Predator, and without the motion tracker I didn't know there was a facehugger crawling up to me until it jumped up on me. I damn near shot through the roof when it filled the screen.

Sweet Home on the NES/Famicom has some very scary moments to it.
And to add on to what was said about Silent Hill 4 being disturbing the parts that got me were both in the hospital. The first being the room full of ambilical cords and the second being when you walk in the one room and there is a huge head of the girl you are trying rescue staring at you..CREEEEPPPY
I also like SH 4. I liked the part where you walk out of the pet store. As the door closes you hear the gunfire, then end up going back into the pet store only to find it a bloody mess, I love that part! I liked SH2 the best of the SH games, have only played the XBox versions of both. Right up there for me would be Resident Evil 4 on the GC. I really enjoyed Fatal Frame on the XBox. Also, heading over to the Dreamcast, D2 was decent. Violent, some nudity and freakyness. It had the touch of Fatal Frame as you can actually take pictures. Could not get many as the VMU would fill up fast, but a pretty cool feature. I enjoyed the story as well as the character build ups. Don't know why many said the game wasted too much time doing it, isn't that what Silent Hill does in its games? So those are my top picks for scariest games.

Let's just say this... I am so very whipped.
Anyway, I don't know what the scariest game is. Of course, it's going to vary from person to person, but from what I hear in the press most people agree it's one of the Silent Hill titles. OTOH, the press is a bad source for information regarding opinionated matters.
I'm looking forward to Project Firestart. Thanks for recommending that, kd.

Since the original Resident Evil I've played through nearly every survival horror title, and I have to say Silent Hill 2 is one of the few that genuinely creeped me out. Aliens vs. Predator for the PC (different game than the Jaguar version) was really intense and shocking as well, and was probably more nerve-racking than Silent Hill 2 overall.

... wow. It takes me an entire day to realize that I made a double post. Now THAT is scary. Or stupid. Kinda like Uwe Boll's take on House of the Dead. Only... that wasn't scary. That was absolutely stupid and a waste of film. Poor unfortunate film canisters...

I played Clock Tower on the SNES for about five minutes. Then a very loud musical shriek startled the utter chrap out of me as a hand reached out of the mirror and strangled me. I never ever went back to it again.
Does that count?
EDIT: Oh, dang... this is the modern forum. Well... the original Resident Evil still gives me the jeeblies. I can't tell you how absolutely frightening it is when you enter a room and have a Hunter rush at you full speed ahead. I also can't tell you the bloody screams from my own throat as they did a sneak attack and sliced poor Chris' head off. >_<

That was my feeling too. IMO the whole claustrophobia thing and theme of the game just didn't translate well into gaming, thus making it a lot less frightening than was probably intended. Had it's moments.
