View Full Version : All US SNES "dustcaps" were the same, right?

For some reason, all these years I've been under the assumption that SNES dustcaps came in both plain and SNES logo varieties, just as NES sleeves came in both plain and "Nintendo" labelled, for third party and first party games, respectively.
Since I've been amassing SNES dustcaps recently and not one of them is blank, they all have the logo, I must be wrong, right? There are only dustcaps with the SNES logo, is this correct?

I just made a quick check and noticed all of mine have logos. It's weird, I just assumed they were like the NES sleeves too. I guess third party can exist, and I wanna say I've seen one, but I can't say for sure.
Later,

Aha! Maybe we were just under the same delusion.
I'm guessing non-logoed caps don't exist...

A bit off topic, but does anyone know when they stopped including the dustcaps with games? I distinctly recall getting a few new games (sealed) with no dustcaps even upon initial opening.

pretty sad that we care even if dustcaps for games had names on them or not...

I believe they stopped shipping games with dustcaps in about 1994. I'm pretty sure games like Donkey Kong country and Final Fantasy III never came with caps.
Personally I'm just capping all my SNES games regardless of whether or not they originally had them. I can find the caps for cheap, they make the games fit better in my game rack, and why not have the extra dust protection?

Not sad at all. NES games pretty famously came in black sleeves for third party games, and Nintendo-marked sleeves for Nintendo games. That's NES collecting 101.
If this theme continued for SNES (and we've established that it doesn't), even the most casual of collectors might be interested in knowing....

What's more, the texture on the third party sleeves can change from game to game...

Didn't they stop using the dust covers around the same time they redesigned the carts, and yeah my old style cartridge for ff3 came with it (version 1.0) but my 1.1 did not.

Aha.. that's why I thought FFIII didn't come with a cap.. I bought mine later. It had the cart redesign.

I'm pretty sure that there was only 1 model of the SNES Dust caps. Who knows, maybe some 3rd party made some

Probably not... all games/caps/sleeves were made in house at Nintendo.

Ahaha. I forgot about how Nintendo changed the carts so you could pull them out without powering off the system. I remember wondering if there really were that many idiots out there breaking their SNES trying to yank the cart out. I thought the whole point of the original design was to prevent people from pulling the cart out without turning the system off.
I guess this goes in the "stupid americans" file along with the SNES design specifically made so people don't put their drinks on top like they did with the NES.

actually they changed the cart design to make the snes game genie less stable and harder to use

Actually.... ;) I believe they redesigned the carts because for some reason people were having a hard time getting the games out, they were getting stuck or something... (maybe they didn't know about the eject button :P )
