Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja

Finally, a dungeon RPG strong enough for a man... but played as a hot chick! Drop your stylus, you pansy, and get back to the old school, hardcore, monster bashing we all grew up on! See if you have what it takes to conquer the impossible levels and gruesome bosses. After all, does it get any better than the feeling of cold steel at the palm of your hands? Hi there! I'm Izuna! So you see, we were canned because "Ninjas are sooo yesterday," and now we're looking for a nice place to settle down... That stupid lord... Just wait'll I get my hands on that jerk! So anyways, we found this quaint little village, but... Everyone's actin' all weird. Grandboss's acting like a kid... Shino-Sis's all mean... What's going on!? I mean, what is up with this place!? Features deep, challenging labyrinths that change every time you enter. Use Talismans to cast spells or power up your equipment. Customize and power up your weapons, which gain strength over time.

Anyone else pick this up?

I just got mine today and played a little. It's actually a pretty fun roguelike type game, and is a breath of fresh air compared to most of the generic rpg offerings for the DS.

So it's literally a dungeon hack like the old Ultima's? No BS distracting side-quests or collection tasks?

Some of the gaming mags gave this bad reviews, saying it was too old-school, so I figure it must be at least half-decent.

I'm interested in this. Maybe once I have some more money...

So is it pretty good? It kind of reminds me of azure dreams for PS One. Is there anyone who has played both and can do a comparison?

I didn't know it was out already. I may have to check it out.
have you (or anyone) played Lunar Knights? I was interested in maybe getting that as well.

Nope, none of that. It is a bit lighter than most roguelikes, though.

Yeah, Lunar Knights is great. Probably one of the best games out for the DS.

It's not as good as AD, but it's pretty close in terms of gameplay.

I haven't played Izuna, but you know they did make a sequel to Azure Dreams for the DS. It's called Tao's Adventure, but unfortunately, it's not nearly as good as the original Azure Dreams. The control system is bad, and they replaced the randomly generated levels with pre-mapped levels. Oh, and there's also almost nothing to do around town, unlike in the original.

Other than that though, very much in the same vein as AD. A tall monster tower, refining your weapons and shields with sand, having little monster sidekicks, and so forth.

Tao's Adventure is garbage. It may be a sequel, but it's nothing like AD or Izuna. Stay far away from that one.

Izuna is decient. The safest nag I have about the game is that they programed some of the town NPCs to dodge your movement so you can't them stuck nor you. The problem with this is that fact that when ever you go to talk to them, you can't catch them. What they forgot is they gave you the rest option which would just make them move the next frame anyway. What I just realized I haven't tried yet is to talk to them diagonally.

Eaither way, this is a nice game to just get some basic gaming in. Not sure if I would say it would be worth $30s from what I have played so far though. It may get deeper.

Ha! I just bought this game today for my B-day. It's pretty cute and the dungeon portions sure does remind me of Fatal Labyrinth for the Sega Genesis.

Just about everything, from the "fog of war" when walking through the dungeon to the enemies moving with every step you take, to the weapons and equipment you can find and use.

Yup, this is pratically an updated Fatal Labyrinth.

Wow, deja vu here guys. I've fucking dreamt about typing this months ago....

Nooo!! A game I must buy now.

It looks crazy awesome and with great style. What's the selling price? $25, 30... $40? DS games just tend to not go down in price due to popularity. Damn you popular culture!!!

When's the Dragon Warrior X game comming out?

Yeah remember seeing ads for it in magazines. Its funny how the magazines will give it a horrible rating, but plaster the ads all over the magazine. If they were really adamant about not liking it they wouldn't even advertise for it.

um, they don't have a choice. Companies pay to have those ads there, it has nothing to do with how much a reviewer likes a game or not, they don't have any say in it.

Good lord. So it's bad because it resembles classic games? JESUS FRIGGIN CHRIST.

Looks ok...the reviews here are actually turning me off to it though. I might get it simply because it's Atlus and I rarely dislike Atlus stuff, but....

And Lunar Knights....have it but haven't played it yet :(

The fact that both Pokemon Mystery Dungeons (same gameplay style taken to absolute minimalist un-fun extremes) scored higher than this game (at Gamerankings, 70%, 66% vs. 59% for Izuna) frightens me greatly

I'm having fun with it so far. Sometimes you do get pitted in "no way in hell" scenarios, but there isn't much you can do about that. So far, I like the game, despite its basic (but challenging) level.

I also like the off the wall slapstick humor.

Any idea how long this game is? I'm flying out to Vegas in two weeks and I've got a 4-hour layover

I'm not sure I understand this post. This is a minor annoyance, but you can 'rest' in the town (L+R), just like you can in a dungeon.

Probably 12 to 20 hours depending on your pace.

Awesomes. Unfortunately I need to fork some money out over the next few weeks for other things outside the gamming world. A bud of mine is picking this up his next pay check (tomorrow?) and I'll have to hang out at his place and check it out def.

I'm glad to find some people who've enjoyed this game! I got it when it came out and was a little turned off at first by the difficulty but after that, it's been a good game for playing in bed when I can't sleep. Maybe the general dislike just seems to be dying as a game mechanic other than a sign of utter failure.

I'm levelling up in the last dungeon right now with high hopes of beating it soon, if Phoenix Wright stops distracting me.

It's ok. Been playing it for awhile and it's not really very captivating. Way better than Pokemon Rescue Team, but nowhere near as good as Azure Dreams or even Chocobo's Dungeon. The items aren't really very useful. The pills are almost useless, and you pretty much have to save everything else for the boss fights.

Game Informer (who don't seem to be very informed a lot of the time) gave it a 3 out of 10 this month. They hated it.
