I agree with many of these, but saying that Mario 64 is the 3d game that started it all, so to say, i disagree with, atleast i never looked at it that way. It was a great game for its time, but i never found it "wow omg!" because of the 3d.

Pretty nice list, though I've never been a huge fan of hearing DMA referred to as "Rockstar" (especially when referring to their earlier titles). Also, *snicker* @ "Herzog Zway".

They made some interesting decisions with their video recording, such as using the Genesis version of Dune II, console versions of The Sims, Gamecube version of Legend of Zelda, etc.

Pac-Man was not on the list.

I disagree with it entirely.

Why disagree on Wolf 3d? That game and Doom 1 & 2 shocked the world :)

Cool list, well put together video too. It's about time Yie Ar Kung-Fu gets some love up in this piece! However I was suprised there wasn't a turn based role playing game mentioned.

You could arguably say it does nothing new and that the gameplay structure isn't very ambitious, which is true. On that same note though, Wolfenstein 3D provided a refined, fast paced take on the FPS that was unheard of for the time and definitely paved the way for later developers to develop original engines capable of more interesting level design.

I was dissapointed with this list. I thought that innovative would mean "doing something that had never been done before," not "being important in the history of games." Space Invaders and Pac Man were much more innovative than Pong, in my opinion. I think this list is an attempt to make people think that American developers are more innovative than they actually are. "So the Japanese made Mario and Zelda, huh? Well, we made the first person shooter and, um, the... crime simulator?"

How exactly does Pong NOT fit your criterion of "doing something that's never been done before?"

Since it's the first video game, it damn sure did things nothing had done before it.

It wasn't the first, though. I remember reading about a tennis game that was played on an oscilloscope(sp?) in some sort of lab back in the 50's or 60's.

Yeah Pong was by no means the first game Spacewars! had quite a few years on it.

Atari actually got sued because of Pong being a ripoff.

If we're going to get into this debate, try OXO.

Cool list but I personally believe Doom 2 was bigger than Doom 3. There were a lot of FPS games on there, what about RTS? MMORPG?

An original game that started it all (ie. pong, ttt, ect) is important because it was an establishment of the idea electronic systems could be used for things other than computational sciences. Big arcade games like Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Pole Position, ect belong on a top 10 as well due to bringing gaming into a mainstream, which also belongs to slot machines, like the ones that first started in California. One thing that bugs me though is I'm sure there are games that went under the radar that made huge impacts on other programmers somehow that sparked new inovations in gaming.

Well.. its not the first FPS games in the world, but thanks to John Carmack's genious coding it was something completely new that the world hadnt seen before. I dont think FPS games would be that big today without these games and John Carmack's work :)

I knew about Space War and Tennis For Two.

Actually, I didn't know it was called "Tennis for Two," but I always considered the game that Higinbotham made to be the first kind of Pong.

In any case, even though OXO came before it, it was the first game that let the player control video motion. That is certainly innovative.

And even if you consider Tennis for Two not to be Pong, and you say that Space War came before the first Pong, Pong is still more innovative, because Space War is a crappy game.

With inovation i think they mean how things have evolved in the gaming world. Altho that something was being made first, like the Tennis for Two, its not that who made it into the home consoles, it was Pong :)

Well, Mario 64 may have not been the first 3D platform, but it was by far the best for its time and everybody copied it. As for Wolf getting the cred, I agee. Some console people dont want to admit, but the shooter market is HUGE. As for the American devolpers pot shot, I would put our programmers up against any other country. Pong may have not been first, but help pave the way for everything that we play today.
