Does anyone have complete lists of what titles were re-released in those sega classics blue boxes with smaller version of the original artwork on front and also a list of what ea games were re-released on standard sized genesis cartridges and not the square-yellow tabbed ea cartridges.

Here is the list according to what people have posted (let me know if anything is incorrect or post any other additions) Also anything that they is not a note for I have searched and found picture of online.

Sega Classics (blue):
Joe Montana I
Buster Douglas Boxing
Arnold Palmer Tourney Golf
Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer Secret of Shinobi
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Super Monaco GP
Golden Axe
Pat Riley Basketball
World Championship Soccer

Sega Classics (Red):
Joe Montana II
Columns
Sonic the Hedgehog
Streets of Rage

Mega Hits / Value Series:
Desert Demolition Starring Road Runner and Wyle E. Coyote
Ecco: The Tides of Time
Mega Bomberman

Super Off-Road

Small cart re-release (other):

I would love to have this as well. I can list the ones I have, maybe we can all just look to see what ones we all have. Here is what I have as in the Blue Sega Classics series boxes

Buster Douglas Boxing
Arnold Palmer Tourney Golf
Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer Secret of Shinobi
Tommy Lasorda Baseball
Super Monaco GP
Golden Axe

I dunno if this is a complete list or not, but these are the ones that I know of:

blue classics:

Golden Axe
Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer
Super Monaco GP

red classics:

Columns
Sonic the Hedgehog
Streets of Rage

The EA carts that you speak of were Majesco re-releases. They weren't done by EA themselves.

The Lost Vikings was also rereleased by Majesco. I think.

F-22 Interceptor was another EA game that was re-released on a standard Genny cart.

Goodwill Hunter

Combat Cars by Accolade also came in a standard Genny cart, and a larger cart similar to those used by EA.

I remember a re-release of Vectorman. It wasn't the blue Sega Classics, but I think it did say Sega Classics on it.

Majesco re-released a ton of games. Good luck listing those. I can confirm that they also did Castlevania Bloodlines and World of Illusion.

Currently I'm only looking at ones either re-released as blue or red classics boxes or re-released with a different sized cart as in the ea or combat cars re-releases. I probably will care down the line but for now I don't care too much about the ones just simply re-released with the cardboard boxes.

Here are the variants I have:

Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (Sega classic) - C

The Lost Vikings was also rereleased by Majesco. I think.

The Lost Vikings was rereleased by Ballistic. Whether or not it was also rereleased by Majesco is possible but I don't know.

Tinhead was rerelased by Spectrum Holobyte.

Raiden Trad was a kind of strange situation. The 1991 release says distributed by Bignet, licensed by Micronet and licensed by Seibu Kaihatsu. The 1992 rerelease says distributed by Bignet and licensed by Seibu Kaihatsu. The art and text is almost entirely different on the rerelease.

Pit-Fighter (and probably Ms.Pac-Man) were rereleased when manufacturing changed from Japan to the U.S. (possibly vice-versa but I don't think so). The U.S. manufactured Pit-Fighter has the "8-meg" splash on the front, Tengen is written in a different color on the manual, the Sega seal of approval looks different and the text on the top of the cartridge changed (from pink to yellow or vice versa).

MERCS and Super Volleyball also have artwork variations.

Isn't one of the Super Volleyballs a Canadian cover rather than a US variation? Or are there 3 North American versions?

If there is a Canadian version that would make three, but that might just be a multi-language text variation on one of the artwork variations. The 1990 release of Super Volley Ball is trademarked by Video System LTD. while the 1991 rerelease as Super Volleyball is trademarked by Sega Of America.

Hmm, sounds like that could be the same thing - the Video System version is marked as Canadian (http://guardiana.net/database/view.php?id=158#v234) at Guardiana.
They also list a Canadian Mercs - are yours all definitely US copies? (You can probably tell from the barcode - 1st Party US games start 010086... while Canadian copies are 069044...)

There was also Codemaster's J-carts. J-carts being the cartridges with two controller ports in them. All were re-released in standard carts.

Yep. I've seen it in an Accolade cart and a standard Genesis cart. Can't say I've ever paid close attention to the boxes though, since I usually just shuffle through the loose carts in search of non-sports games. LOL

Looks like this is one of the hardest to find variations. Unlike every other variation we've discussed here, I can't remember ever seeing the MERCS variant. As the story goes, only the first manufacturing run had the rare artwork.

Well, that leaves me at a loss I guess. The UPC for "SUPER Volley ball" (that's how they actually spelled it) is 0724817902011. When googled it brings up one page, which says it is a French UPC. There is only English on the back though.

In a coincidence, I have a copy of the version in question on eBay right now. If anyone wants to check it out here's the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130085260885&rd=1&rd=1

A stock photo of this version was not available so I had to use a scan of the later release.

Yes, Barkley: Shut Up And Jam! was rereleased in a cardboard box (Majesco maybe?) with a standard size cart. I guess the sequel didn't make the grade because as far as I know it was never rereleased.

There was also Codemaster's J-carts.

Only in Europe for most of 'em ;) And not all also had standard versions - Skidmarks, MM '96 and MM Military are all J-cart only. They do have some Euro cover variants though.

The MERCS info is based on a thread I saw somewhere while searching for Super Volleyball variance information. Unfortunately I didn't bookmark the page and now I can't remember what I searched for to get to it. So no, I don't have a pic nor have I ever seen this game online or in the real.

After further investigation it looks like the versions of Ms. Pac-Man and Pit-Fighter that were made in Japan have the pink lettering on the cartridge. When Tengen started making the cartridges in the U.S., they changed the lettering to yellow. That's also when Pit-Fighter got the "8-meg" splash on the front of the insert and both inserts had other small modifications.

Does anyone know anything about this cart? It's TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96, normally nothing special. But it's an EA style cart. Not just that, but it seems to be an actual EA release with the yellow plastic clip and it says Electronic Arts on the back. I have the normal version of this complete and it's released solely by ASC games. Does anyone have a complete version released by EA? I'd really like to see what it looks like. Anyone know the story on this variant?

http://home.comcast.net/~nebrazca78/TNNBass_8.JPG

She said that the box says nothing about Electronic Arts anywhere. I'm guessing that Majesco/ASC games made a deal with EA to buy a bunch of left over cartridges they had. After those were used up they went back to using standard carts. Maybe someone knows more...

On the topic of Canadian variants, I know that for the first few years of the Genesis' life, before the switch to the red layout, Canada's case and manual were the multilingual ones that were released in Europe, but with the Genesis logo on it instead of the Mega Drive logo. I sent a couple pictures of the Canadian version next to the US version. If he still has them, maybe he'll post them. If not, I can take another photo. That is, if anyone cares.

The copy of Super Volleyball that I have is the one marked as the US version on that site that anagrama provided. I bought my copy used. I would dig it out, but I don't know which box it's in. I do know it's got english only.

If you're referring to me, I didn't save the pictures either. But I did run across this Marble Madness variation. Obviously the cart label is different. The insert however is almost identical except the text at the bottom on the back. Check it out:

Well, you Canadians are officially bi-lingual aren't you?

eday_2010
03-30-2007, 08:19 PM
Yes, this country is officially bilingual. But as far as I know, packaging things like video games don't need to be. Sonic 3 was only english, as were all the Sega CD games and Genesis games in the red layout.

Long time since I've been on the site, but I got to sorting through my PS2 Greatest Hits and Xbox Platinum Hits games recently - which got me thinking about older "Hits" collections like the Sega Classics series (and the even more obscure NES Classics line). Knowing that only DP would have such info ( :) ), I dug a little and found this helpful topic, which I think could use a little more research.

In any case, my point is this: Wasn't the Sonic Classics collection under the Sega Classic banner? I think it had Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Mean Bean Machine, or something like that.

Also, is the "Spider-Man" variant of Revenge of Shinobi only found in black-box carts, or did some sneak into blue-box versions as well?

After Sega stopped using plastic boxes they also switched to the "Mega Hit Series" from "Sega Classic". Even so, Sonic Classics was not originally released in the "Mega Hit Series" but may have been re-released as such.

I think there is hardly any chance Sega Classic versions of ROS shipped with the Spider-Man cart. Those Spider-Man carts would've been sold long before the Sega Classic version of ROS was released.
