In the new Edge, there's a pretty good interview with the director for the new SEGA Racing Studio... not only did it somewhat dispell my fears about Sega Rally Revo (it's going to be a purebred AC racer, lots of ephasis of Blue-Sky classic SEGA AC aesthetic, handling largely modeled off SR1) but the guy also hinted at what the studio's next project might be... and (surprisingly) a Daytona revival was one of the possibilities mentioned. :D

this revelation sent me for a loop!

There has not been even a hint of a new Daytona USA, since like 2001-2002, when Daytona USA 3 was listed as a Dreamcast game, canceled, then got re-rumored as a NAOMI 2 arcade game, then got re-rumored again as Daytona LIVE for Xbox-based Chihiro arcade hardware linked to an Xbox home version, which never happened.

this time, I hope it happens for real, on an Xbox 360-based arcade board for arcades, or at least, as a console-only release with lag-free local area networked gameplay as an option (XBL-only would not be good enough, too much lag).... Most importantly, new tracks that are designed as brilliantly as the original 1994 Model 2 arcade Daytona USA.

of course, a new Daytona USA would have to be combined with included ports of Model 2 Daytona USA, Model 3 Daytona USA 2: Battle On The Edge and Power Edition, all unchanged, unaltered from their original arcade incarnations.

I don't know how much longer I can take the torment of not having PROPERLY done ports of Daytona USA and its sequel at home.

Honestly, I'm much more interested in a new Sega Rally game. I hope it retains the arcade-style gameplay. Sega Rally's going to have to be excellent after having played RalliSport 2, which is my favorite rally racing game to date.

I'm with you 100%. Sega needs to bring out perfect ports for a majority of their Model 1, 2, and 3 titles.

Never cared for the DAYTONA series myself AirRaid... personally, I'd rather have SEGA finally get around to making good on their promise to bring out a home port of Super GT /Scud Race. But as with that ever happening, I'll believe it (a new Daytona) when I see it. Shoot I'm ready for another "Fighter's Megamix" right about now too.
:pimp:

50s Brawler, I would definitally go for a carbon-copy port of
Scud Race / Sega Super GT. or an all new sequel for the new current-gen consoles, but I would not care to see another Fighters Megamix, or the oft-speculated "Racers Megamix" because of Sega's history of making poor arcade-styled games that are built specifically for consoles. Sega's original arcade efforts have always shined, but their attempts at console-sequels or remixes have mostly failed IMO.

I most thouroughly agree with the above quote.... I'm still waiting for Star Wars Trilogy and LA Machineguns. I'm surprised no ones ported them to the Dreamcast, of all consoles....

I want those games, as well as Model 2 Manx TT Superbike,
Model 3 Harley Davidson & LA Riders.... in fact, every MODEL 2, MODEL 3 game ported over to Xbox 360 and/or PS3, with NO changes to anything.

the PS2 was a poor platform for porting/emulating MODEL 2 games to.
Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally and the upcoming Virtual On do NOT look as good as the arcade versions even if all the polygons are there - the textures and colors SUCK.

although PS2 is far more powerful than MODEL 2 in terms of CPU, pixels, polygons, the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer chip is not as good as the Martin Marietta graphics chipset in MODEL 2, as far as textures and rendering features.
although much older, the MM MODEL 2 was made by graphics-industry experts, the Graphics Synthesizer in PS2 was Sony's homebrew attempt at a graphics chip--a very very powerful one, but lacking in many ways.

I would be totally happy with Daytona AND Sega Rally......on the Wii. That console is MADE for over-the-top arcade racers!

Agreed. Esp. on 360, its controller is great for racing games.

Agreed for the most part (VF2 is a HUGE disappointment, and Virtua Racing doesn't look or control right), but have you played the Sega Rally 1995 bonus disc that came with Sega Rally 2006? It's pretty close to perfect. The control is butter and the graphics are definitely on par with the arcade. 2006 was a terrible game, but 1995 is worth the price of admission and then some.

We all know Sega really needs to release at least some of these games for play in the home. They are holding those cards very close to their chest. It is almost like a security blanket. If things start really going south, they can bust them out as a lifeboat. Capcom eventually did it with their classic arcade games. Sega will too.

We all know that they should do an arcade racing game series or compilation based on their old stuff. We need that perfect Daytona. Bundle it with a port of Daytona 2 if you are afraid people won't buy Daytona again (you bet your you know what people will.). A US release for at least the PS2 version of Sega Rally 1995 would be nice (it'll never happen); a port of Super GT would be even better.

They need to make sure they give Sumo Digital a call if they decided to do one of these at some point. Even the PS2 port of OutRun 2 is absolutely excellent. The bonus run through the Sega GT & Daytona 2 tracks in the original XBox OutRun 2 release was just a tease, but a truly incredible looking one. They are the right developer for the job.

Despite the fact that OutRun 2 & SP were two of the best racing games I have ever played, I don't believe they sold very well. The truth of the matter is that people need to buy games like these when they are $40-$50, not when they drop to $10-$20, for us to see a gift like a racing comp from Sega. The fact that so many would rather drive cars that control like a tub full of water on wheels with a broken tie rod, in Gran Turismo 4 than powerslide with a Ferrari like you're a GOD in OutRun 2 is totally insane to me. The handling is totally preposterous, yes, but what's not to like about it? The press needs to stop forcing people to think that everything needs a campaign mode and a million multiplayer options (though a splitscreen 2p mode in OutRun 2 would have been awsome no matter how bad it could have looked).

Sega eventually gave at least Japan a nice amount of System 16, Super-Scalar stuff on the Saturn and DC. Even the uneven PS2 Sega Ages games aren't too bad a deal most of the time. They are relatively affordable as imports go. The Next Gen systems truly have the power to emulate these games correctly, so we may see some of them at some point. It has to be profitable to be possible. Hopefully we won't have to wait until the waning days of this next generation to reap the benefits.
