I was looking around just now, curious about ALL the Wonder Boy titles, 'cause they seem to have very little consistency...
When I found this:

Wonder boy on a Sega Card and on a Sega My Card?
I don't know anything about the "My Cards" but I thought that the Standard cards were only 32k... and I've NEVER heard tell of a card release of Wonder Boy...
Then again that picture DOES look a little fake... I don't know...

The My Card is for the SEGA SG-1000 system, an early Japanese Sega console, this game is dumped and playable in MEKA, if you're interested. It's like playing Wonderboy on a ColecoVision.
The SMS Card version of wonderboy, I dunno where that pic came from, but it's been around the internet for a while, and has done nothing but confuse SMS collectors. Probably an early mock-up used for promotional purposes.

I don't believe it.It's not real and wonderboy was never made on a sega master system game card or sega would of had to say something about the game coming on the game card a long time ago.

Believe it.
It's true. I own a bunch of MyCards, but not Wonder Boy. I've seen it in real life. Here's more proof:

And here's an auction from Yahoo Japan that's currently running with one for sale:

Well, there seems to be a little confusion.
The MY Card in that pic is for the SG-1000, and not for the Master System/Mark III, which is what we're debating the existance of.

I believe it. I have had many sega cards that I didn't think existed at first. Hang On, Bank Panic, among a few others. I can't remember what game it was, but I sent a card based game over to Zoop a long while ago that he didn't even know existed...and he is pretty much the master of the master system!

FYI, Master Higgins IS Wonder Boy in a sense. But...Wonder boy is a SEGA character and Master higgins is a Hudson soft character...whatīs the mistery between this two sympathetic boys????

Yeah, I always wondered... which game is the rip off? I always assumed Sega ripped off Hudson, but I never knew for sure.

I'm not sure of the exact details, but I remember reading awhile ago that Sega were the original creators of all games in the series and that Hudson had some sort of licensing deal with them. When you look at the differences between Wonderboy 1 and Monster Land you'd guess the other way around. If the story I read was true, I'm curious as to how Hudson would have still been allowed to make their own sequels based directly on the first game. Maybe they bought the rights to that "version" of the series altogether? None of Sega's later Wonderboy titles resemble the first one in any way at all.....

I'm quoting from memory, so forgive any innaccuracies:
Escape, who developed the WonderBoy arcade game with SEGA wanted to publish the game on other consoles, so they broke off and joined or created Hudson Soft. They took some Japanese personality and stuck his characture in place of wonder boy, and published the Uber-rip-off game Adventure Island. The following Monster Land, Dragon's Trap, Ect were all developed by Westone for Sega, and thus the reason the series headed off in another direction.
And Shame on you Evan, SEGA never rips-off anyone, they're too busy creating fantastic original games!

Actually, Westone created Wonderboy. however they had help from Sega.
BUT it wasn't sega's game, so they couldn't stop them from releasing it on other platforms. BUT sega created the name WONDER BOY. so only releases on sega products could bear the WONDER BOY name. The TG16, PC Engine and NES ports had alternate titles, eg Adventure Island (instead of wonderboy), Dragon's Curse (instead of WB III:Dragon's Trap) , Monster Lair (instead of WB III: Monster Lair).
There are 6 WB games, comprising 3 seperate storys in all. and they go:
1. Super Wonder Boy (aka wonder boy<sms>, adventure island<nes,tg16>)
2. Super Wonder Boy in Monster World (aka wonder boy in monster land <sms>)
2. - Monster World II (aka wonder boy III: dragon's trap <sms>, dragon's curse <tg16>)
2. - Monster World III (aka wonder boy in monster world <genesis, sms>, Dynastic Hero <tg16>
2. - Monster World IV (only on japan megadrive/genesis)
3. Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (aka monster lair <tg16>)
However they WERE released as Super Wonderboy (the first), Super Monder Boy in Monster World (the second), and Wonder Boy III: monster Lair (the last), with all the extra Monster World episodes being console releases later on.
CHRONOLOGY:
The above chronology is the order in which the stories proceed, however below I will list the order they were actually released in.
Super Wonder Boy (shortened to Wonder Boy on sms and retitle on nes)
Super Wonder Boy in Monster World (renamed wonder boy in monster land on sms)
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (final arcade WB game, not ported to sms, ported to genesis/megadrive with identical title)
Monster World II (released in japan on sms, renamed WB III: Dragon's Curse in north america due to it being the third WB game released here and just Dragon's Curse on tg16 due to restricted WB title. Is RARELY referred to as Wonder Boy IV, even tho it's the fourth release.)
Monster World III (released in japan on genesis/megdrive, renamed Wonder Boy in Monster World on genesis and sms, for no apparent reason other than they couldn't use THAT title after fucking up the naming scheme.
Sometimes reffered to as Wonder Boy V because it is the fifth wonderboy game out.)
Monster World IV (only relased in japan, so not really known by any other title. sometimes reffered to as Wonder Boy VI.)

And as well, only the orginal Adventure Island was based on Wonder Boy, all the AI sequals, were NOT based on other WB games, but original creations
And yes, I'm a Wonder Boy freak
