For those that are completely unaware, the Playstation 3 has a dirty little secret. The secret is that if you use a Playstation 3 with a HDTV that only does 1080i and 480p, you will be in for a very rude awakening with certain PS3 games. Namely all the PS3 games that are native 720p. You see, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 doesn't feature a scaling chip. At least not one that can be used like the 360's can be used. With an Xbox 360 everything is easy as pie. If you have a 1080i HDTV that doesn't handle 720p, you simply set the 360 to output 1080i and you are good to go, no worries. If you have a 720p only display, you set the Xbox 360 to 720p and your good to go as well. No fuss, no muss.
Unfortunately, with the PS3, it isn't so easy. The PS3 doesn't have an easy way to scale game resolutions. It's mind boggling to think that the Sony engineers would fuck this up, but indeed they have. If the game doesn't support the resolution of your TV, then you are shit outta luck when it comes to the PS3. Take Resistance: Fall of Man for example. Many proud PS3 owners popped in Resistance into their PS3's on launch day, and hooked those PS3's up to older HDTV's that can only do 1080i and 480p. They didn't think there would be any problems.... I mean, why would there be? It works just fine with the Xbox 360, why would there be problems with the PS3? But they were in for a very rude awakening when they discovered that Resistance dropped down to a very last gen 480p on their 1080i HDTV's. The same thing happens with all the other PS3 games that are native 720p. Games like Genji and Madden, just to name a few.
But there was hope......
When Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3 came out, it had a special mode for 1080i only HDTV owners. Although Sonic the Hedgehog is a native 720p game, it has a special mode that allows it to work fine in 1080i. No downrezzing to 480p. Neither Sony or Sega made any announcement about Sonic being the first native 720p game to have a special mode for those of us with 720p challenged HDTV's. In fact, it was awhile before anybody even knew about it. Not suprising considering Sonic has been panned as one of the worst games in recent memory. Not too many people bought it, so not that many people screwed around with it and figured out it didn't drop down to 480p like all the other 720p games.
When Virtua Fighter 5 arrived...sporting the same 1080i friendly mode, the videophiles rejoiced! All the early adopters that had older HDTV's that could only do 1080i and 480p were relieved to find out that the problem had finally been solved. Sony had a fix, and finally all the games would work just like they do on Xbox.... Right?..... uh..... Right? Apparently not. It appears that both Sonic and VF5 are the exception and not the rule. Somehow Sega has figured out a special video mode for both Sonic and VF5 to work in glorious 1080i even though they are both 720p native, but the rest of the new PS3 releases aren't so lucky. MLB 2K7 was the first chink in the armor. Everyone assumed it would have the "fix" too, just like VF5. Then they got the game home, and turned it on, and saw some crappy 480p. F1 was another game that also showed that the scaling issue hasn't been fixed. Another 720p only game that gets downrezzed to 480p on 1080i HDTV's.
Motorstorm of course is the big one. This is Sony's big game for early 2007. So far, all they've had is Resistance, and finally they have another flagship title. It's just too bad that all the early adopters out there with 1080i HDTV's aren't going to be able to enjoy it like it was meant to. You see, most of the people that have 1080i only HDTV's are the early adopter types. They bought HDTV's when they were still a new and expensive thing. These are the same kind of people that jump on any new technology including PS3's and things like that. I know.... I'm one of them. About 4 years ago I bought a brand new Sony HDTV that was supposed to be top of the line at the time. I had no idea it was 1080i and 480p only. Of course, back then I really could have cared less. I didn't know it was going to be an issue. Here I am 4 years later, and I rarely if ever use my PS3 on my living room TV because of this. Sure, Blu Ray movies look great in 1080i, so I can watch Blu Ray movies on it. Any of the 1080p games look great too, because they all work in 1080i as well. But games like Resistance and Motorstorm look like ass. It's unfortunate, but that's just the way it is. Hopefully things will change.....SOON.:(

Q: is there a similar downscaling problem with the PS3 if the game is in 1080p and the HDTV can "only" output 720p or 1080i? Will the game run then in 720p or 1080i?
Yep, I totally agree with you. Sony certainly messed this one up. Not enough that for most average guys the HD tech talk goes anyway over their heads, nope, now the PS3 output is even for guys with some basic knowledge confusing, tedious to fool around with settings, and just plain worrisome.
I know one thing...I'll buy Virtua Tennis 3 for the Xbox360 anyway but even if I had a PS3 I would not buy it for the PS3. The Xbox 360 just handles these different resolutions nicely, and for what I know there is anyway not a noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p on TVs smaller than 50" if you sit a normal distance away from your set.

If the game is 1080p, it will work fine on both 1080i and 720p sets. So no worries with 1080p games. It seems the native 720p games are the only issue. And hopefully, everyone will do what Sega did with VF5 and Sonic, but it might be late Summer, early Fall before all 720p games have the 1080i friendly mode.

This is the gospel truth. 1080p is the most overrated marketing buzzword in consumer electronics in recent memory. The only term that is more overrated is "125 all digital channels". Like Dish Network and all the Cable TV companies all talk about how their stuff is all digital! That's so funny. People actually fall for that shit. Of course it's digital jackass! It doesn't mean it isn't compressed to high hell and back, lol.
I will also say that if you have a absolutely ginormous 1080p HDTV, or are sitting a few feet from it, then 1080p might be pretty cool, but for the vast majority of everybody out there, 1080p is a waste of anywhere from $600 to $3000, depending on the display you buy. Sometimes you only have to pay $600 more for 1080p, sometimes an awful lot more (if it's a large plasma).

It seems the native 720p games are the only issue.
...you mean on older sets 480p/1080i, right? 720p games shouldn't be a prob on 720p Tv sets. If so, that would mean that if someone has a 720p/1080i TV there shouldn't be a prob with PS3 games. (?) I just want to be sure because I was so confused after the PS3 launched when I heard about all these downscaling probs.
Console systems are supposed to be easy, that's why the won the race against PC games. Now not only the systems are slowly getting more and more complicated, nope, the TV settings and p and i and resolutions became such a big issue that I sometimes get sick and tired of it.
I enjoy a lot great graphics, and it was about time that the TV resolutiuons improved and we got a better pic for games (and even more so for movies in HD) BUT I just wanna plug in a game in my 360 and later in the PS3 without fooling around with settings.
I have a 720p/1080i LCD HDTV (32"), and if you tell me I won't have a prob with 360-games and PS3-games (let they be in 720p or 1080p native resolution) I think I'll pray a rosary tonight and have a big sigh of relief. :)

Can someone please summerize Anthony1 for me?
Nah I'm just joshing ya. That does suck. Another big win for Sony!
Formula 1 Championship Edition is 720p only as well, so I guess it falls into the same boat as Motorstorm then?
I just got Formula 1 CE and Motorstorm this week and am impressed with each.

Yeah, Motorstorm is awesome. Don't let this thread detract from Motorstorm in terms of the quality of the actual game. I had the import version for like 45 days, and I loved it to death. I'm going to pick up the US version later today, and I can't wait to play online. I play Motorstorm on my 720p DLP projector, so it's no worries for me in regards to this whole 1080i thing, but the fact that if I try to play it on my living room TV it looks like ass is just an unnecessary irritant that shouldn't even exist.

Right about the time this issue reared its ugly head all over the internets.
Sony has talked about a software scaler, which would fix the 720p games on 1080i only TV problem.

The ps3 should have never been released with all these video output issues. People with older sets are getting screwed. I have never seen an electronic device release with such video output issues. The hdmi doesn't even work on my tv. I think it is because the my hdmi tv only does 1080i and not 720 or something like that. Every time an update is released I cross my finger. Utter Madness.
Sony was trying a little to hard and wound up waste alot of peoples time due to poor product testing.

I'm a little behind the time as far as all this HDTV stuff goes... but don't most HDTV's have a chip in them to convert whatever resolution they get into their native resolution? Or is that only in newer sets?

besides the resolution issue, the ps3 is a very solid machine. hdtv sets aren't that expensive, and if you have a lcd that doesn't do 720p for some reason, then maybe it's a perfect excuse to upgrade? throw the old hdtv in a guest room or as your primary tv for watching shows/movies, and use the new sexy set as your gaming tv.

Personally, I thought the PS1 was a helluva engineering achievement. I give Ken Kutaragi all the credit in the world with the engineering of the first Playstation. You have to remember the original Playstation launched in Japan in December 1994 (or was it November?). Now, moving on to the PS2, I absolutely agree with you. The PS2 was a technological disaster in my opinion. It became the dominant platform "despite" it's horrible technical design. Remember how in the first 3 or 4 years of the PS2's lifespan you couldn't find any games that were 480p compatible? Even though 98 percent of the Dreamcast's library was all 480p compatible, and the Emotion Engine was supposed to blow the Dreamcast out the water?
After the PS2, I figured that there would be no chance of Sony screwing up the PS3 from a technical standpoint. But it appears I was wrong. I do give them some credit for pushing the envelope however. Blu Ray does allow them to have lossless 7.1 sound in game, if you have the right equipment to experience. Xbox 360 won't have lossless in game sound, because it simply uses up too much space on a 9 gig DVD disk. Also, the 360 would need a HDMI output to pass along the lossless sound.
The lack of a simple scaler within the PS3 is absolutely dumbfounding. I can go to Best Buy right now, and buy a $99 HDTV Direct TV box that has an internal scaler. Adding a specific hardware scaling chip inside the PS3 would add about 40 cents to the overall internal cost of the PS3. I honestly don't know what the hell the engineers were thinking. Of anybody, they should know about how many 1080i only HDTV's are floating around out there. I happen to have one in my living room. It's a freaking Sony. I mean, how ironic is it, that I would have a Sony HDTV, and a Sony PS3, yet when I try to put them together, Resistance and Motorstorm drop down to a very muddy 480p on it. You would think that they would have done some testing with their own equipment. Yes, that Sony TV is an older HDTV, I purchased it back in 2003 or so, but still, HDTV's aren't exactly disposable diapers. You don't use them and then just throw them away. When I make a major purchase on an expensive television, I expect the thing to provide me with at the very least 8 or 9 years of use. I've only had that thing for 4 years, and already their retarded engineering has made it obsolete.

So would you too characterize the situation as Sony "fucking everyone over"? I don't think most consumers knew what 480p was when the PS2 came out. I certainly wouldn't characterize all that Emotion Engine nonsense as Sony fucking people over. Every console has had some kind of ridiculous hype going in. I for one feel like I got far more than my money's worth over the years with the PS2. And I think it says a lot that you can play both Splinter Cell and RE4 on a PS2, arguably the definitive games on the competitors' consoles.

I don't see how Sony is "fucking everyone over" either, Kid Ice. I think its just flame bate. I know the overwhelming majority of this board are Sony haters, So I will just leave that post alone.
I never had a problem with my PS1, never had a problem with my PS2. I now have a slim PS2, not because the first one broke, but because I needed to play dev builds, and I have had no problems with that either.
Besides the video output problems that they are having, which really blows for first generation HDTV owners, it has been a very solid piece of hardware.
There have been vertually no reports of systems dying, or other hardware related issues. The 360 has had many, many hardware problems, especially at launch. The Wii has even had the odd report of a dead system, and of course the straps recall.
The only thing I can think of was some were having BT syncing problems. Though this did not turn into a widespread issue, as the speratic reports suddenly stopped quickly after launch.
How many people on DP alone are on their second, or third Xbox 360?
Sony has said they will fix the video scaling in software, we just have to wait and see on that one. Sure that sucks. It sucks they didn't put a hardware scaler in it too. But considering they took out hardware back compat. for Europe, they likely left out a hardware scaler to keep the price as low as they could (yes, even at $600).
I know you are over exagerating to make a point Anthony1, but I bet they left the scaler out to save quite a bit of money per system manufactured.
