So I opened my PS2 to try to realign my laser. I turned the gear a bit and put it back together and it still didnt read my disc. I opened it back up and saw that the gear reset to the original position. Why is this happening? I have a launch model PS2.
I was reading some FAQs about it and it said that the white gear can go all the way around, but mine cannot go all the way around as it is squared off in 1 mm or so...

It may just be that your laser finally crapped out...my launch system finally died about a month ago.

The white gear has a bigger effect when reading the outer part of the disc. The boot-up section is located in the inner section so it might not help with this case. You should prolly measure the laser coils and if they're good, adjust the laser pots. Values vary depending on the model, try a search with the KHS- number.
EDIT: Just wanted to add I use Moto GP Demo to align the laser. I turn the screw until the video starts to skip, then back until it skips again and adjust it to the middle.

I just used a piece from a cotton swab to jam the gear... Now it reads my PSOne games. :D One problem though, now it doesn't read PS2 games, when they worked before.

You need a new PS2. Those crappy gear fixes you see online won't do anything for your launch PS2.
New lasers for that version are well over $48USD per, so you need a new PS2.
