I've searched the internets for these questions, but I can't seem to find the answers.

1. Does the XBOX 360 support progressive scan when playing DVD's?

2. Does the XBOX 360 upscale DVD's?

Yes or no is fine by me on either answer, because it won't stop me from buying one this friday!

Thanks!

A. Xbox 360 plays DVD movies right out of the box and supports progressive-scan if your TV can accept 480p signal or better. Here's the full list of supported disc formats: DVD Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW. Xbox 360 is also capable of playing back the audio sessions of such CD formats as CD-Extra, Enhanced CD, etc.

I did not see anything (as of yet) about the upscalling though.
so I hope this was at least 1/2 way helpful. :D

2. Does the XBOX 360 upscale DVD's?

Yes, via VGA cables only. The 360 will not upscale if you're using component cables.

Thank you both for your input! My tv does support 480p, plus 720p and 1080i, so this should work. As for the VGA input, well, I don't have that.

I don't know that I would use the 360 as a DVD player. I've tried it a couple of times, and each time I thought the picture quality was god awful. Both times were on HDTV's as well. Now, I have heard different things regarding the upscaling over the VGA cables, but I haven't actually tried it myself. I've heard that DVD's look very good upscaled over VGA, and I've also heard that the color is kinda off via VGA. I'd like to try it myself if I ever find a 360 vga cable for like 10 bucks.

Yea the Dvd player over Vga upconverts very nicely but the text is a bit blurry and colors are a little off. But the Hd-Dvd player at 1080p over component is SaWeeeeet... :)

Then try GameStop. I found a slightly used first party Xbox 360 VGA cable for about $10 at one of their stores. I just recently purchased an Xbox 360 myself in time for GTA IV coming in October. I did give DVD playing a tryout and I found it to be a bit of a disappointment (at least at 640x480 and at 768p). While it plays letterboxed movies fine it tends to pillarbox TV shows which is something my Mac Mini doesn't do. My Mac gives everything a proper ratio regardless of whether it is a movie or TV show. Hopefully this is something they can fix in their next X360 OS update.
