ive been thinking about my collection of genesis games...i have a few boxes, but when i started collecting i had more cartridges than boxes/shells. so i have been collecting just the cartridges.

now im looking back on the matter...i feel like it may actually be easy to complete a genesis collection all boxed. but im not sure, so im asking all of you to help.

how hard is it?

also, if i decide to start trying to find all genesis boxed, is it easy to find just the shells without games...or is it more likely that i will just have to rebuy all my cartridge only games and get them with boxes?

thanks for the help.

Genesis games are easier to find complete, since the boxes are sturdier. And they are cheaper.

Right now, Genesis games are pretty cheap on ebay now. Also, check out Game Exchange again, they sell game boxes for the old systems. I remember buying a box for Shining force II, Splatterhouse 2, Beyond Oasis, and Ys III from them.

Radiant is right in some sense, but it all depends on your definition of "complete" for the Genesis collection. Miracle Piano and Outback Joey are extremely difficult to find boxed, and the boxes for the Wisdom Tree unlicensed games are pretty tough. I am missing only ONE box right now for a complete collection with boxes, but it should be easy to find, just some of these latter ones become pricey.

Ah, I forgot about those.... But its easier than trying to find complete SNES stuff... I never see a complete Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, EVO, Super turrican 2, and tons others...

Then again, Crusader of centy is a pain to find compelte too.....

I'm only missing about 4-5 genesis games to complete my list.

damn i wish i was that close on any system.

It's not a complete set, just the ones I'm looking for. Mainly the popular stuff. I think I'm missing Double Dragon, Battletoads, Battletoads& Double Dragon, Phantasy Star IV, Contra Hard Corps, M.U.S.H.A, and Sonic & Knuckles.

Its a lot of fun to start collecting Genesis.... You spend like 50 bucks and get a crapload of games, but then towards the end its a pain.

its much cheaper for just cartridges.. thats why im wondering if i should start trying for boxed, or stay with just the carts. theres so many games as well...

EDIT: i think i may try and start buying boxed genesis..but ill stick with just carts only with systems that use cardboard for their game packaging (ie. nes, snes, n64, 32x...etc) since the genesis boxes are so sturdy, and many genesis games look like crap, would look much nicer in a box on the shelf.

Not too hard. Since they are sturdy as previously mentioned, and actually held the game nicely in place, a lot of people never chucked it, unlike SNES boxes. Therefore, it's easy to find used Genesis games CIB

When I started, I didn't care. After 30 loose carts or so, I realized CIB wasn't too hard, and made things look nicer, sure, but it was just a convenience.

I pretty much just buy complete or boxed Genesis games, loose just looks bad and feels odd knowing there's plenty of boxes/manuals floating around to complete them. A local store owner helps me out when he has boxes and manuals for loose games I own. A few months back I got Mutant League Football cart-only for $1, then grabbed the box+manual for $2 at his place. There's also a bunch of users on here that if you post a list of loose games they'll come out of the wordworks and sell you orphans.

Believe me, it's way more then pain!!! I'm looking for this since I registered on this forum. If you look the date under my avatar, you'll understand me when I say “it's more then pain”!!!!

ok so i should make a list of my loose gen games and post it up on here. people will come out of woods and sell me orphans! thanks! haha.

EDIT: i assume crusader of centy is the last game you need complete to complete your gen collection? (considering your avatar and sig)

i buy both, if its a good game and has no box, i'll still get it. i would like to one day have a complete collection though, but that's a ways off.

I could never understand why there are so many loose genesis carts especially since it was one if not the first system to put the games in the nice plastic cases.

Actually, Sega Master System games were the first to have the nice boxes...

burn lol

Over here, tons of Mega Drive games I've seen lately are boxed, and most have manuals. But the Sega systems themselves are NOWHERE to be found, not in pawn shops, Cash Converters or even those ripoff bastards Gametraders (seriously, they're selling a non-top loading NES, no box or instruction manual, just cords console and 1 control for $100 AUS..this is an actual store) . Nintendo consoles are very uncommon, but AROUND if you get often enough.

A couple years ago you could find MDs/SNES's everywhere..I'm starting to freak out when I wonder what happened to them.

Well, I have a US Genesis Collection and am missing only 14 boxes for the set. Get them boxed, it looks cooler, but you watch as people are starting to eye the Sega as time goes on due to it being cheap. I remember when Intellivison was cheap and easy to collect, now look at it. Buy boxed games now or pay more later...

I have an extra Crusader of Centy box! I bought 400 games because there were a few good ones in the lot. And the only game that wasn't in it's box was Crusader of Centy. Man was I pissed.

It's really easy. It was not difficult to get every box for my collection. Genesis collecting is so cheap, it makes sense to collect boxed from the get-go.

Yeah, Genesis cases stand up to time well. The few cardboard ones might cause you a bit of trouble, though...

How many Genesis games are there anyway? I did a line count on a PDF from RFG and it gave me over 700, thats a lot of space taken up by sports crap :(

I have 936 on my site's master list so far, and that's only counting one regional release per game, as well as modern releases like Beggar Prince. Hacks and betas aren't included.

I'm sure it's missing a few though. I've been updating for almost three years, and one always turns up now and then.

I've got 200 boxed so far, and the cardboard ones are the biggest pain in the ass. A friend of mine made high quality laser scans of a few of his, like Adventures of Batman and Robin, Ristar, and Comix Zone, and he sent me copies. That's what I'm using.

I'd eventually like to do the same thing with all my 32X games.

We owe our thanks to Funco. In an attempt to "save" space, they resorted to disposing of the boxes on the games which they received on buy backs and put them on the shelf as cart only :( I amassed a good majority of my games in 2000-2001 from Funco raids and had to settle for a fair amount of carts. Since SMS games never went through the national second hand market, there is actually a higher percentage of SMS games still in their cases today!

In wanting a better way to display my Genesis games I am in the same predicament of wanting to "box" my loose Genesis games. I like to be able to look at the titles of my games on their side and placing carts sideways doesn't work too well. I'll be checking with that Game Exchange? Then it will be to the B&S to try to compile the rest of me boxes.

If the game is cheap enough and you need or want it, then go with a loose cart. I mean you can always try to track down a box or manual later. At worst, just buy an extra copy of the game if you come across another one that is complete. From time to time you may be forced to buy the whole game to get that box and manual. Not so bad, though. You'd be able to sell or trade the loose copy of said game for something else anyway. That way, you would also be able to keep the better copy of the 2 carts inside of the box. What good is buying a complete game for serious collecting purposes if the cartridge looks like hell? Secondly, wouldn't you feel bad passing up a good condition loose copy of a "key" game for $3-4 only to get a beat-up copy (mainly the cart itself) that just happens to be complete?

It does depend on the game. You can pay just as much for a loose Sonic or a loose EA Sports game as you would if you get it complete. However, take a game like Double Dragon. A loose cart of that one can usually be obtained for a few bucks. A lot of times when I see Double Dragon loose it is just $4-6, give or take, but the price jumps like crazy if you are getting a boxed copy with the manual. Look at the rarity guide for that entry! Damn fun game, though. The guy above who said he was also looking for it needs to get it pronto. Great arcade port........:)
