Super Mario Bros. 3 Cheat? (SNES)

Ages ago, on a few different All-Star cartridges, I had found that pressing the Select button would allow me to cycle through the suits and pick whatever one I wanted mid-level. I find that with both my own and my friend's All-Star cartridges, it does not work.

I don't see much about this online except for one section about it on Gamewinners and a single line about it under the All-Star page on Wikipedia.

My question to you is have you known about this cheat? Have you done it before? Can you still get it to work? If so, what are the conditions that must be met to make it work.

Any ideas?

If I remember correctly, this was a debug feature for the developers that was accidentally left in during a processing run of All-Stars carts that could only be available thru a mail in offer when you bought a SNES system.

Yes, you can access the cheat in the Game..the drawback is...You need a Game Genie to do it, The Debug Mode is in the NES version also

MM, the one I am talking about is without a Game Genie.

Sounds like johnnickerson hit the nail on the head. If anyone has more info though, i'd love to hear.

Does anyone have the Cart with the Debug Code in it, without the use of the Game Genie
