(Sorry if this has been done before. I shuffled through Classic Discussion and couldn't find it.)
I just picked up a Saturn ($12.50 at Goodwill, woot), but it came gameless and I now realize that I know absolutely nothing about this system or the games for it. So list some of your favorites while I wait for this Panzer Dragoon auction to get closer to closing time.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Sega Saturn! On the Saturn, you will find a great variety of overlooked and underappreciated games. The Saturn was the Dreamcast of its day, in that a lot of the original games for the system were of top notch quality. A great list of the best Saturn games here http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1594
Without going into those high priced rarities and obscure imports, here are some of my favorites for the system:
Astal
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Nights: Into Dreams
Street Fighter Alpha 2

Is the 3D control pad that comes with Nights really neccessary?

It's pretty much necessary for 3D games such as Nights and Sonic R (I think...). I also find it to be much more comfortable and stable controller for everyday purposes.
Congrats, and enjoy...

I'd say that the 3D pad is only necessary for NiGHTS, as playing it with the stock controller is a pain. Analog handling makes it easier to navigate other games, like Burning Rangers, but it isn't really essential.
And now, my favorite domestic Saturn games.
Guardian Heroes
NiGHTS
Burning Rangers
Dragon Force
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Panzer Dragoon
Virtual On
Dark Savior
Shining Force 3
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Night Warriors
And just a few imports . . .
Radiant Silvergun
Sakura Taisen
Princess Crown
Cyberbots
Vampire Savior
By the way, does anyone else find it strange that Panzer Dragoon II Zwei bears that title on the packaging? Isn't that like saying "Street Fighter Alpha 2 Two"?

Do you have to modify the system somehow to play imports?
Excuse my n00bishness.

No you dont have to. You can get a 4 in 1 adapter. It lets you play imports and it's a Ram cart in 1. Some games like Marvel superheros vs Streetfighter need extra Ram to run the game.

@Daphne:
The system needs to be modified to play imports, or you can buy a Pro Action Replay cartridge (japanese Gameshark) I believe they still have them on www.lik-sang.com The import games are well worth it, especially if you like fighting games, shooters, and all around funny wierd stuff in beatiful 2D graphics.
@Kid Fenris:
Hmm, i guess 2 Zwei is a bit redundant. But no more redundant than say, Street Fighter Zero 2. I guess it's ok if the redundant word is spelled out, or in a different language.
