So I got Street Fighter 3 - Double Impact along with a dreamcast and some other games recently. But the game has an odd problem.
It loads up SF3 just fine, but when I go to play Double Impact, the menu shows, but after a few seconds, or if I try to start a game, the screen goes black and it ends back at the main dreamcast menu. Every other game i've tried so far on the system works fine, so i'm not sure if it's the disc or the system. I'll be trying it out on my own dreamcast when I get it back from my girlfriend, but for now I have no clue why this is happening.
The disc doesn't look that bad, alot better than some of the other games i've played before with no problems. No scratches on the label too.

I have had this happen before but it was on a disc that had a scratch near the center of the disc. The disc would load upto the chosing of the SF3 games. Then regardless of which game you chose it would go back to the Dreamcast OS screen. You may have a bad disc or your laser is going out, most likely it is the disc.

It must be a problem with the disc. My copy of Double Impact has seen several plays, and both SF3 & Double Impact load up fine.

Damn, it does look like there is a tiny scratch right on the first "rim", right past the barcode thing.
Think buffing this thing will help it out?

I had this problem recently with a new DC I bought. After a few days and me slapping it around a bit, it works fine now.

Slapping it around? Should I use a large trout or something else? :)

Here's a trick I learned. Hold the disc up to the light, if you see any holes coming through from the light on the disc itself, the Dreamcast is damaged. Dreamcast disc are very fragile and can have their data easily erased more so than any other disc format I've seen, by a mere mark.
I have had a similar problem this week with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. Whenever I do an air combo, the announcer will not say "AIR COMBO"...but when in training mode, he will say it perfectly fine. Yet my disc has no signs of damage, which is odd to me.

Buffing or resurfacing may help, of course, it depends on how deep the scratch is.

The first copy of Sonic Adventure I bought did this. It's probably got some scratches, so get it buffed.

That perticular problem stems from the power supply having poor contact with the mainboard. In the Dreamcast (and the Saturn too) the mainboard has a series of metal posts that stick up. The power supply slides down onto these posts with little sockets that make the power connection. Where the Saturn had a pair of screws in the back where the power cord plugs in (that kept the power supply board from moving around when being plugged into / unplugged), the Dreamcast does not. So over time it's not uncommon for the DC power supply to lose it's solid connection to the power distribution posts. Usually opening up the DC and removing and reseating the power supply will fix things. Sometimes the posts need to be bent slightly toward their connecting surfaces on the power supply, sometimes the socket tabs on the power supply need to be bent out just a bit more.
Of course, as mentioned, another way is to give the DC a few good smacks on the left side and hope things settle against one another properly again. :)

That's the one.
Yeah, I could open 'er up and fix it, but it's more fun to smack it around. I used to have an RCA b&w "portable" tv (with vacuum tubes) that would only work right with a few smacks. Neven thought I'd feel nostalgic for that. LOL

If the laser on your dreamcast is starting to go, Double Impact and Third Strike will be the first games to stop playing. I've seen many dreamcasts that will play any game but those two. I would not recommend resurfacing the disc unless you are 100% certain it is defective. Dreamcast games don't take well to resurfacing and often will not work afterwards.

Odd, but actually good news.
I Double Impact came with a game/system lot I bought on eBay. I'd rather the system suck as opposed to the game.
Guess i'll have to wait untill I get my system back home to be 100% sure.
