Every year I get this stupid price guide and every year I can't believe they keep putting it out:

http://www.videogamecollecting.com/

Here's some 2600 highlights from the 2007 edition:
Sears Adventure: $6
Atari Adventure: $15
Atari PacMan: $20
Commavid MagiCard: $45
Ultravision Karate: $45
Commavid Video Life: $45
Commavid Stronghold: $280
Answer Malagai: $25
Men-A-Vision Air Raid: $45

The most expensive 2600 cart is Color Bar Generator: $540

I wish I could find one of the "20 or less" copies of Video Life for $45. That would be amazing. Then again, I also wish I could sell my extra 10 copies of Pacman for $20 a piece. I guess neither one will ever happen.

This makes me think of the thrift store thread here in Classic Gaming in which Griking "educated" some kid who assumed stuff like Donkey Kong was rare. All you need is 1-2 people per state to read this book and it will lead to a minor epidemic.

Good luck finding Video Life at all much less $45...

You would think that the people who wrote that guide would do some more research. Where would you even come up with a $45 value for a game that rare because you can't tell me that the author paid that for it in fact I can almost guarantee that he hasn't even seen that game. And who would seriously spend $20 for a Pacman, thats just ridiculous?

I hate to stray totally off topic but I can't believe a "buy it now" was put on that. Who knows what it would of gone for? A "new" video life would be as close to priceless (in the sense of an indeterminable market price) as you could get for a video game. I'd set the reserve at 5K if that's what you were looking for. Also where are all the pics for that auction? Is that all there was?

$5000 is a lot of money and it did take some time before anyone actually did decide to buy it although it would have been interesting to see what it would have went for without the Buy it now.

Well, I'd assume all of the people who were bidding on the game were probably familiar with this web site. So namedropping people from Digital Press did the trick. Why pay for extra photos if you don't need them? :)

Still overpriced by at least $1.70.

They're practially impossible to GIVE away, even when advertised as coffee table leg levelers.

:o Yeah, that's out of my price range. I believe I'd go Neo-Geo AES with the side-scrollers and puzzles first, or build an arcade cab.

That price guide though, waky.

I'm curious what this guide has to say about the Sonic 2 "Not For Resale" version on the Genesis. We've had like 3 new users in the past month who have made posts on here asking if it is "rare" and "valuable." They have to be getting their misinformation from somewhere. A book like this seems to be a healthy fountain of misinformation.

Actually, I've been selling a lot of my classic gaming stuff (sorry, locally only -- besides, most of my stuff is already reserved for buyers), and I did put my lose copy of Atari 2600 Pac-Man up for free. Some kid actually did want it...

Wasn't $20 the price the guy on Antiques Roadshow quoted for 2600 Pac?

Not that it's right...

Pac Man for $20??? woot!!! I can now open my secret warehouse of Pac Man games that I've been keeping since I hijacked a couple trucks heading to the dump in Alamagordo twenty some years ago. I'll be rich!!!

Of course, I'll probably only break even with all the money I spent on Warehouse rental for all those years.

EDIT: Oh, wait. Those are ET carts in my warehouse. DAMMIT!!!

Of course not. It was written by flea market vendors and it's looked upon as gospel.

BTW, what kind of website is that? I was looking for a forum because I had to read some of the conversation but from what I can see there's absolutely no links at all on that website from what I can see. How did you even order the book (and why)?
