I have two young boys, 4 and 6, and they both love Spiderman. I have a few Genesis and Super Nintendo games that I let them play, and I was just thinking...."Man, I should get these guys a Spiderman game". I know there are quite a few different Spiderman games for the Genesis, Super Nintendo and Sega CD, but I don't remember any of them as being particularly good. Of course, I really didn't play any of them back in the day too much, so maybe some of them are pretty decent.

Basically, which Spiderman game on 16-bit would be considered the best?

I liked all the Spiderman games on the Genesis.

The first one is a bit more slow-paced and strategic, but if you (or your kids) like that sort of thing then I think it's actually the best Spiderman game I've played on any platform.

Spiderman/Venom: Maximum Carnage is pretty much the opposite. It's totally hectic beat'em up arcade action. It's not the best beat'em up on the Genesis, but it's pretty good and if your kids love Spiderman, they should like it a lot.

Spiderman & The X-Men is sort of inbetween as far as pacing goes. It's my least favorite of the three Spiderman games on the Genny and I also prefer the two straight X-Men games, but it's okay. The levels aren't really that well designed, especially for web-slinging.

I haven't played any Spiderman games on the SNES, though the same Maximum Carnage and Spiderman & The X-Men games were released on the SNES as well. I don't know which versions would be considered superior.

Spiderman/Xmen was god awful, but Maximum Carnage kicked all kinds of ass. I never got to play the Kingpin one, but I've heard nothing but good things from my friend who owns it.

Seconded, horrendous. This game is more punishment than fun.

This one's okay, a little on the repetitive side, and street thugs shouldn't be able to hurt Spidey, but whaddya gonna do. LOL Standard Final Fight type stuff.

The original Genesis Spidey is still among the better titles, as another poster mentioned. The only other one probably worth trying is the Separation Anxiety game (SNES version), but I don't remember too much about it. I sort of equate that one with Maximum Carnage, but it's been a while since I've played it.

IMO the best Spidey games are the Atari 2600 and Sega arcade games. :)

I don't know if this would count but the revenge of shinobi the original release not the rerelease had a crazy casts of ripoff guess star villans, The teminator, batman,Spiderman,Godzilla. When I was initally playing the game and saw spiderman come out man I was hooked. Awesome game.

What about that one that was supposed to be based on the animated series? I think it was simply titled "Spider-Man"...

Spider-Man the Animated Series.

It's pretty good actually. My favorite is the Sega CD version of Spider-Man vs. the Kingpin, but the cart one is excellent too. It might be too hard for them though. I'd recommend Maximum Carnage, since it's a simple beat-'em-up that both can play together.

MC is single player, last I recall.

Forgot about Seperation Anxiety. Has anyone even played that one?

Spiderman vs The Kingpin was a tough little game, my brother had it for his Genesis and it really wasn't all that bad.

The Genesis Spider-Man, Maximum Carnage, and Separation Anxiety were the three that sucked the least, to me, anyhow.

Yeah, come to think of it, you're right. Moreover, it's harder than SMVK, so it's not a good choice for small children. I've never played the other two though.

I haven't played these SNES Spider-Man games quite yet:

-Spiderman/X-Men Arcade's Revenge
-Spiderman (The Animated Series)
-Spiderman & Venom: Separation Anxiety

However, I've played

-Marvel Super Heroes (Spider-man is part of the playable cast and I quite like this Capcom game, it's very similar to the Capcom SNES X-Men game)
-Maximum Carnage (I thought it was rather boring and annoying)
-Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes (this is the RARE and somewhat pricey EXCLUSIVE Super Famicom import game... I liked this... though it is no masterpiece)

To read more of my thoughts on Lethal Foes, as well as see a crap load of pictures on the game:

EDIT: more fun with Spidey (yes, this is my personal work, just in case anyone is wondering if I stole it from someone else or not)

I'm down with Spider-Man Vs. Kingpin for Genny or Sega CD. It was my first game for Genesis (tied with the Sopic Pack-in).

It's unfortunate that there isn't an awesome Spidey game out there, although the arcade only Sega brawler is OK. I saw a build of the 360/PS3 Spidey and wasn't impressed at all. New York still looks like a ghost town. Next gen Spidey huh?

Spider-man vs the Kingping is really good on Genesis (and the Sega Cd version of course) and is the only 16-bit console Spider-Man game I'd recommend. It was produced by Ed "Ecco the Dolphin" Annunziata and you can sort of tell by the complex level designs and the difficulty of some parts. It is indeed difficult and maybe kids today just wouldn't put up with it.

But its got Spidey clinging to many surfaces, great freeness in web zipping, and many enjoyable enemies including Doc Ock, Electro, Sandman, Venom and Hobgoblin. The Sega CD version is much faster-paced with many more levels and extra graphics thrown in.

I always viewed Spider-Man the Animated Series for the SNES as a hidden semiprecious stone, not truly a gem, but something like an amethyst - Worth finding. The controls are pretty tight, and the representation of Spidey's world is well done.

Seperation Anxiety is harder than Maximum Carnage, and could be pretty frustrating for the youngsters.

There's a PC game which I have a copy of (haven't played) from about '91 which would also be considered 16-bit...doubt it's as good as the others (and that's a a relative thing too; I don't like the others that much).
