View Full Version : Question for those who have purchased from overseas sellers (japan)

I have never purchased anything from an overseas seller so I was just wondering if there is any hidden little costs that might go along with it. I of course check feedback and I've seen plenty of the buyers being from the States and had great transactions. So besides maybe a longer wait for the items and maybe a higher shipping cost is there any other customs crap or other things a buyer has to worry about or consider?
Thanks for any input. :)

I've never had anything but the additional cost for shipping come up when buying from japan or anywhere in asia

I've had a lot of stuff shipped over from Japan and not once have I encountered a surprise fee or charge.

The only other possible cost would be a duty charge (a tax on goods bought in another country), but you would have to be making a major purchase to worry about that. Even then it would most likely slip through. I've made lots of purchases via eBay and Amazon Japan, and have never paid duty.

As for speed, that depends -- EMS packages usually reach me in 3-5 days, and they're even delivered on Sundays if required.

EMS is my only experience, but I've had several come that way. As mentioned above, they get here surprisingly quickly and come with your mail carrier along with everything else. No fees or anything.

The only thing you "might" have to worry about is getting charged duty if it is over a certain $ amount when shipped FedEx of UPS. I don't remember what that amount is for Washington, but when I had stuff come it was under $400 each time and never had any charges. Some states have lower $ amounts, but that's easy enough to check.

Thanks everyone :)
Looks like I won't have any problems and alot more possibilities for imports and other cool stuff direct from Japan and asia. This helps me where I won't just shy away because of the seller location.

Like I said, never a problem with the USPS. It was only one time when stuff came from HK and was more than $400 did I have to pay something. Even then I think it was less than $30.

Import away!
