so ever since i graduated college almost 4 years ago, i have been going to flea markets every weekend in the spring and summer. i have yet to find one commodore 64. i usually see 2 or 3 nes, a crapload of genesis, a snes once in a while, a few ataris, but never a C64. why is this? i thought this was supposed to be the #1 selling computer of all time? this has been pissing me off because i bought 3 untested ones off ebay and none worked.

100% of untested items are faulty, people selling broken items have the inane ability to be able to increase thier value by not testing them.

however working items are always tested..funny that ?

but over the pond in the uk, you hardly ever come across any of the things you mantion apart from genesis and c64s

I was just noting to someone the other day that I haven't seen any Commodore stuff in flea/thrift markets in over a year now. In my book Commodork I mention how I always pick up C64 computers and drives when I run across them, because they won't always be available. It seems like maybe that time is coming ...

I still have mine, complete.. Koala Pad, Software, and all. I even still have my Okimate 10 - one of the very first color printers on the market! :)

The only problem is - I usually play my C64 stuff on emulators, now. It's faster and easier. I honestly have no idea if any of the stuff still works, or not. The last time I actually used my commodore was 1988 or 89. It's been sitting in a box from when our family moved in 1990.

So even if you do find a c64, finding a working 1541 drive is gonna be the hard part.

Well this site has some for sale, http://www.collectorscardsandgames.com/new/Commodore64.html , and for a freakin cheap price. Just ask if they have some in stock. I brought my Intellivision from there and like 20 games for it. :D

I just have to say that not everything listed as "Untested" in a sale thread or auction is "faulty." I've bought a few systems here and there, which were considered untested, and they always worked fine. Most of the time people were missing one or two hookups and could not "test" it. Those systems include Sega CD and the Sega Genesis. I'm not recommending people buy untested systems all the time, just saying........

ive seen a few C64's at fleamarkets and are usually covered in dust and dirt, the last item i saw at the trade center was the portable C64, but he wanted more then i had on me so i left it, this was all about 4 years ago, i havent seen anything since

i do play alot of the games on emulators, but a bunch i cannot get to work correctly, it is not like running nes games, there is alot more to it. the only reason i bought the untested systems was because they were from people who did not sell video game stuff, just regular dealers who where cleaning out thier basements. that site for the C64 stuff is cheap though, i might break down and buy one.

I haven't seen a C64 around here, well ever. They just don't exist unless people are keeping them in their closets or something. I have seen a few games though.

I've only run across a couple in the wild as well. It is odd since they did sell extremely well back in the 80's. The really sad thing is I think a lot of people, upon finding one in their attic, basement, ect, probably consider them obsolete junk that no one would ever want and just toss it in the garbage. It sickens me to think just how many old systems of all makes currently reside in various landfills. :(

I would be one of them, being that none of them work anymore.

The easiest place to pick up a spare is from lemon64.com . I'm sure some of the guys there have an extra if you need one.

Me, I still use mine.

Which makes me sad. :(

I haven't found one in a long time but I don't really go out looking like I used to either. I have at least 8 boxed ones and 10 loose ones. I haven't tested any of them but if anyone wants one I could do test some out. $10 for a loose one or $20 for one with an okay box.

Well I'm not sure where everything is, but there are two monitors in my closet and a C64 box. I'll have to look around to see what I can find, since I'm sure my mom would love getting rid of some of the stuff.

Man I would so love to get back into the C64 if I had the time. I feel your pain, bought a couple of dead units myself and gave up. Still have a (last I checked) working 1541 drive CIB, a koala pad and a crapload of disks that I haven't checked in 10+ years. Who knows if any of them still work.

My interest is piqued...

I used to see these systems frequently, in fact I'd typically pick up the monitor if it was there and leave the computer & drive...I ended up with 3 or 4 Commodore monitors that way. As with everything else they have become more scarce, but still pop up occassionally at garage sales and flea markets. A few years ago a lady GAVE me a box with about 300 bare 5-1/4" disks, many "original games" when she couldn't unload her C64 at a garage sale no matter what the price. I still occassionally come across 'sealed' software, I find it strange to find stuff still unopened after all these years.....but i've packed them away for trade fodder for any C-64 enthusiasts..

I lucked out. I had remembered that an uncle had had some Commodore stuff, so I called him. I scored two like new 64's IN THEIR ORGINAL BOXES, a monitor, a floppy drive, a box of joysticks, a couple of hundred floppy disks, and about 80 Commodore magazines (such as RUN). I have one mostly set up, but I haven't messed with it for a while. My uncle said they were both working prior to boxing them up and storing them away in a closet.

I think I've only seen a handful of C64's in the wild. Up until the early 2000's I would regularly run into TI's, CoCo's, even an Amiga (once!) but rarely a C64. I found one at a garage sale about 2 years ago for $15 with monitor and a bunch of disks, which is now in my basement. That was it.

It's strange that such a top selling system is so hard to come by. People must be hording them.
