I got this Sega Master System (and 12 games, only 3 loose) for free today and it only came with a power lead. I figure I can get the RF cord pretty easy but where can I find a controller? I tried Trademe (New Zealand equilvalent of ebay) and there was nothing except a 3rd party controller. Any ideas on where I could pick one up?

Use a Megadrive pad. The Master System's D-pad is an unresponsive, mashy square pile of poo.

Although I'm sure I've seen MS pads with a more normal style D-pad?

Personally, I find the Megadrive/Genesis controller so much more comfy than the SMS controller (the crescent shape means no sharp corners that hurt the palms).

The last SMS system I picked up in the wild had those SMS Wico sticks.....at the time I didn't even know they existed (I wonder if they would work on the Colecovision w/ 2 button input?)

Couldn't tell you, but I will say that Genesis/MD controllers work beautifully on the 2600.

One more vote for 'MD/GEN pad'. I always found MS pads to be prone to breaking anyway (got through 2 in my 2 years as an MS owner).

Definitely just use a MD/Genesis pad, and more over the original 6 button pad (not the re-released 6 button). Like everyone has said, the original SMS pad was pretty terrible..

Actually I'm not entirely sure the 6 button will work on SMS, never tried it but I don't see why not.. Anyone that has?

Or you could always hunt down one of these...

The Sega Master System control stick. But I wish you luck - I haven't seen one of these since 1988. Not to mention, they look like they were designed for lefty's. I would say, try sega-parts.com, but I don't know if they ship to New Zeland..

I just got one of those a couple months ago at a local flea market. It is pretty nice and I would advise to OP to try to find one on Ebay or somewhere. The only drawback is that it's very light and has a small base, unlike the wide based stick for the Genesis or the super-Advantage for the SNES. So it does tend to want to tip over but ti doesn't take a whole lot to get used to using it.
As others said a normal Genesis controller will work fine. Shadow77110, since you're located in NZ the Sega 1000's were available there so if you come across any controllers for it those will work fine with a SMS and visa versa.

Some games won't work right with the Genesis/MD Controller

try aussie ebay, most of the sellers ship to Kiwi Land, also the MD pad is better
although you may have problems playing things like Wonderboy in monster Land

A Mega Drive controller is fine most of the time, but it won't work with some games. I think Wonder Boy in Monster Land is one of those games.

I have one of those control sticks myself. It's very nice for Out Run but a bit cumbersome for platformers and stuff.

Am I wrong, or are only a couple of those actually Master System games?

No, he's right -- not a lot of them were released here in the US, but they are Master System games. :)
