View Full Version : How long before GC, XBOX, PS2 dies off?

you think this will be the last year for the GC, Xbox, PS2? or you think there will be 1-5 titles coming in 2008. usually the kid cartoon show games always keep coming out for 1-2 years after the new gen comes...atleast i think. anyone know?

Xbox and Gamecube are just about dead right now... PS2 will linger on a little longer. 100 million PS2-owning homes= market, and developers won't give that up so quickly for just a few million PS3-owning homes (and before you criticise this as a PS3 bash, the exact same thing happened with the PS1 and PS2 at the start).

There are still a few GameCube games coming...but not much. This will definitely be the last year for that system. I'm amazed how quickly a system dies off when it's successor has arrived.

yeah they die off quick, but usually they have those kiddie games come out i assume because they dont think the kids have upgraded to the new system.
Nebagram - common sense that they wouldnt stop production for the PS2. its the best selling console ever. i didnt see any PS3 bashing, its understandable. just wonder how long it will stay alive. if the last game for PS1 was in..what 2004? maybe the PS2 has a few good years left.

Yup. This is why I've been busy buying up Xbox games as I come across them. My local Gamestop/EB has a huge selection of games for $9.99 or under!

I was thinking the same thing the other day. The ps1 last game was 10yrs after the release if the ps2 follows suit that would be 2011
Well at the end of the PSX's life, there were a lot of budget titles thrown out, so that's probably what will end up happening.

I was going to stop when I reached 100 GameCube games because I felt that was a nice round number...but now I've decided, what the heck, I'll keep going.

On that note does anyone know for sure the official last PSX game? I have been trying to find a thread or info on that for a long long time... I have heard from a lot of people but no one who knows for sure?
If anyone knows please let us know..

as far as games youd like to play, this is the last year for the GC. xbox too, or maybe even 06 was it.
as for my predictions, i think game for the gc will keep coming out this year and maybe some of the next, since they so flawlessly wokr with the wii, budget devs might do that to save dev costs. as for xbox, i really dont see anything come out for it, there are pretty few kiddie games for it as is... maybe some crappy racing or hunting games might come out, but i hihgly doubt anything in 08. ps2 i think still has at least one year left in it.

All final games were released in 2004. The final 3 PlayStation releases in order:
Madden 2005
NFL GameDay 2005
FIFA Soccer 2005 (official last game ever, released October 12th, 2004)
I find it comforting to know that Fifa was the final game; at least the system went out with a kick.
The PSX's 11th Birthday hits September 9th, 2006.

I was working at a best buy at the time and you couldn't pay people to take ps1 games at that point especially not at $29.99 or higher (I believe they were 29.99 but don't remember for sure), they sat there until they clearanced for a few bucks.

Microsoft was stupid by cutting off the Xbox when the 360 came
Exactly! The Xbox was on a roll in 2005...and then Microsoft just decided to pull the plug and say "screw you" to everyone who had an Xbox. "No more new games (at least from Microsoft themselves). Sorry, but to get more games from us, you have to buy our new system! Oh, did I mention that you have to pay for extra content that should have been in there in the first place?" That's what Microsoft was basically saying when they did this. The Xbox would have lasted until now if it wasn't for MS pulling the plug on the system when the 360 came out. It would have been nice to have all three Halo's on one system.
Sony, on the other hand, refuses to let the PS2 die, since there are millions and millions of systems out there that people own, and they want to make people happy. Not everyone is ready to jump ship yet to the PS3. Hence why developers are still releasing games on the PS2 (since it costs half as much money to develop a title for the PS2). PS2 will probably last until the later half of 2008, since more developers might port some of their Wii titles to the PS2 (ex: Medal of Honor Vanguard, Rayman Raving Rabbids). The Xbox has been dead since late last year, and the Gamecube has been "dead" since late 2005.

I wouldn't be shocked to see new Gamecube games come out for a while. The Wii is backwards compatible so it's not as if there isn't a market.

Domestically, this will be the last year for XBox & Gamecube Games because major retailers won't carry them on the shelf past 2007.
The Playstation will continue to have games (mostly sports and budget titles) made for it until 2009 I'm guessing. This is the PS2's last good year. In 2008, everyone will be onto the next-gen consoles.
Japan is a whole 'nother story. The PS2 will probably have games made for it over there until 2012 or some crazy crap like that - look at the Dreamcast - it died in 2001 and new games are still coming out for it.

If you look at Japan, though...well...Square Enix and Capcom are still putting out reprints. Last new game was May 2004 though I believe (Black/Matrix 00).
Anyone know about Europe? Latest release on VGR is 7 Shoot Games (2005), though considering the dearth of PAL entries I wouldn't trust that too much.

I'm proud to have got my XBOX when I did (Xmas 2005). It was kind of on it's way out, yet it was still getting some new games released last year.
But now that stores want to rid themselves of XBOX games, it's a wonderful time to get games for it. :rocker:

So there is nothing else on the schedule then for Xbox?
Am I correct in assuming that some Backyard Baseball game is the only thing slated to come out for Gamecube? The last time I looked at a release sheet, that one was apparently scheduled way ahead to August or October (something like that). I can't understand why someone would be waiting that late in the year to release it with nothing else (that I know of) due between now and then on GC, unless it is still being developed.
Like it would have killed EA to do Madden 08 on Xbox and Gamecube then call it a day......

For GameCube, there's a few others, I think. Radio Allergy is supposed to be coming out but it's been delayed another month (according to Gamespot) and is now listed for April 27 or so. And I have seen Meet The Robinsons (based on a Disney movie) as another GC release.

Probably because by the time Madden comes out, most major retailers won't have any shelf space dedicated to Xbox or GC.
Well, GC stuff might still be able to be fouund in stores - it's actually been selling decently well lately - but Xbox is definitely on life support.
You're not going to find much out there besides Platinum Hits, sports games and clearance stuff... and even those sections are dwindling fast.
PS2 is going to be around for at least another 2 or 3 years. You're not going to see any AAA titles like God of War 2 past this year, but there'll still be plenty of games shoveled out for it. Don't forget that the PS2 is Sony's bread and butter right now with the failure of the PSP and the struggle of the PS3, so they're still going to support it.
Hell, I was at Sam's Club a few weeks ago and they still had PS Ones on the shelves, along with 3-packs of games.

Well but it proves that the PSP is not a failure especially for Sony's first handheld console.
I still like how people are saying it's a failure when it's really not doing that bad
It's not doing as well as the DS but that's to be expected.
I just don't understand why people are so against the PSP.
I don't own one but I plan to, it's a great system though and deserves more respect.

I think the PSP is a neat system but the price is just way too high and from what I've heard people say, it's just too big and is a battery sucker. The next PSP (which may just be a redesigned one) better be no more than $150 and have a 10-hr. gameplay / video watching battery life or its gonna be screwed as well.

Wow, I never even heard anybody actually complain about the size of it. I also really see no point of people complaining about the battery, are your really gonna sit and play a game for 2-3 hours during one gaming set? Even then, you can just plug-in the charger and still play.
Sometimes you don't have the luxury of a convenient wall outlet like on long car rides and airplane trips. Having to recharge the unit fairly often defeats the portability of it.

I second that. I will be buying it for Sid Meier's Pirates, which may not sound like a killer app on paper but when every review I read insists it is better than the XBox 1 version in every way, well...........it peaks my interest.

Back to the matter at hand...
The XBOX isn't "dead" - there are still titles slated for release this year.
The Gamecube has at least three that I know of that are coming out in the near future.
However, I would expect that the Cube will be done before the beginning of the holiday season. Nintendo has created quite the buzz for the Wii, and everything is going extremely well.
They'll focus 100% of their energy on the Wii and DS.
As for the XBOX, it's basically over, but not completely. However, like the Cube, Microsoft is putting all of their efforts into the 360, which has been out for over a year now (Nov. 05.)
They simply cannot focus their attention on a system that's out the window, when they're trying very hard to make those games compatible with the 360.
The PS2 isn't done yet - that's for certain.
For the Cube and XBOX, expect them to be almost completely done by the end of October.

I went looking for an Xbox Major League Baseball 2K7 and couldn't find one. EB/Gamestop didn't carry it and neither did a few other major chain stores I stopped at. I wouldn't be suprised if it did exist because it also came out on the 360, alleviating any obligations Microsoft would have in making it backwards compatible. But I haven't been able to see an actual physical copy of the Xbox version yet.

Just guessing, I think he might be referring to any one of these that has been announced, given release dates, and then puffft, disappeared.

The PS2 debuted in October 2000 in North America, so that's not quite 3 years (closer to 2). Besides, how can you prove the game was actually made right before you bought it? I bought brand new NES games in a department store in the summer of '03, but they definitely weren't made then.
At any rate, the well for last gen releases is rapidly drying up.

I haven't seen an XBox console on a store shelf in what is nearly a year, if not more. A few people I know were forced to resort to buying second hand systems due to Microsofts stop on production. I'm in the same boat that it'll be just about dead by the end of this year, along with the GameCube. GC had some great games for it but it just hasn't done much. When I go to a store the GC is always the smallest section, even against the N64! PS2 of course will last an extra several months to a year, so mid-late 2008 as a projection. I made sure to pick up the slim silvers upon release and proved to be an awesome time to buy.

The reason I said it was brand new was because it hadn't been released until then. I asked a couple stores when they were expecting it, and the launch date from such stores as EB Games, FuncoLand, KayBee, and Toys R Us (Forgive the lack of the backwards R.) was still a couple weeks away. A couple weeks later, I got Origins as it was being pulled out of a box of them. Far as I can tell, you can't get much newer than that.
Long story short, it was worth the wait.

As far as I can see, Fifa 08 (which already has my reserve down on it) and madden 08 are the final swan song for the xbox. I just picked one up about 2-3 weeks ago (my 2nd xbox), and am loving it. I'm looking forward to picking up cheaper games that I missed the first go round, and assembling a pretty collection of xbox 1 titles, before I get a 360 (a BLACK 360, hopefully.) Besides, I'll be playing some Fifa by the end of September, I can't wait. :D
I think the PS2 will last a couple more years.
The Xbox & the Gamecube are pretty much on their death beds.

I don't like to say that a console "dies", because it doesn't. Consoles simply retire. :) The Xbox and Cube are retiring. The PS2 will join them in about two years.
Heh it depends what you mean dies off, if you mean from an NA/Euro perspective then my honest guess is that the PS2 will last roughly a full year and a half - two at most, and that last 8 months or so will probably be garbage titles with maybe the odd little ok game between and almost 100% sure those games will all be NA made.
If you mean when will the ps2 fully die ? worldwide ? that is hard to say because the PSX in japan is still getting games put out for it, now yes these are not NEW releases, they are either best or re releases but rockman 1 and 2 are coming out soon for it in the same way that strider one was, as in a hardcover book with some art and pages etc.
The PS2 in japan has at least 3 years or more left in it imo, for new titles and I would say maybe right up to 2012 or more for re releases of ps2 titles. alot of those will be the limited editions idea factory and other guys doing the strat or rpg games or dating stuff, but fist of the north star and GGXX core is out soon and SNK plans to do another neo geo collection, this time being samurai spirits WITH tenka on it, I am sure there is alot more to come which we will not see, glad I got my ceramic white ps2.
Xbox is basicly dead and so is gc, even in japan other than some crappy sports titles nobody cares about other than yanks or welfare families.
