Ok, so my friend had a ps2 with serious disc read problems. I opened it up, compressed air'd the inside, cleaned off the lense, and gave it a shot. Everything worked fine. Then, as I was putting it back together, the part that goes over the laser (which still had the ribbon attached to the top by a sticker) got stuck. I think I may have maneuvered it wrong, given it too hard a tug, or SOMETHING, but the ps2 no longer detects that it's being turned on. Dammit. Did I kill it by pulling out the ribbon? I took out the disc tray and I can see down inside. The ribbon is too mobile down there for comfort.

If I did indeed pull it out too far, is there any way to reattatch it so the PS2 works again? I don't care what tools or parts I may need, I need to know if its possible to fix a ribbon. If there's something else that might be causing the lack of power I need to know as well. ANY bit of advice or links would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!

oh, to clarify.
It's the 7-pin ribbon, the one that goes to the power/eject.

I cannot figure out how to get any deeper inside my PS2 to take a better look...

upon further inspection, I did indeed pull the 7 pin ribbon out of the bottom, which is why it is not working. Mother f---...

If someone can help me with this I would much appreciate it. Point me to a guide on how to re-solder that, if its what I need to do? Can I use the same ribbon, or do I need to buy a new one? Again I appreciate the help DP. I know you'll have some answers for me...

Although this might seem like a challenging task, it is really pretty easy. All you have to do is insert the cable back into the port that it got yanked out of. The port is roughly located underneath the CD tray. Most likely you will have to unscrew the screws that hold the internals to the bottom plastic case. Once you do this reinserting the cable is pretty easy.

really? that's wonderful news!
Thank you very much starwander, for giving me a little hope.
If anyone has any tech sites that show how this can be done (so I don't muck anything else up) I would appreciate it.

What model of PS2 do you have? I might be able to give you step-by-step instructions depending on what model you have. The model number is located on the back label. Its the number located right after SCPH.

Thanks again
