View Full Version : <Rant> DO NOT BUY from Discount Games! Scammer!!

Hello everybody. I know others have been screwed by discount games because I've heard stories. Here is a place for anyone to share bad experiences with discount games. Here's mine:
I hate discount games! They have the worst service I have ever seen on eBay and that says a lot. Let's begin at the beginning:
Order 1: I ordered 5 or 6 games. A couple of the games were a little rough but I didn't expect much from a discount store anyway. Overall I was happy, nothing was glaringly wrong with the order. So later I made another order...
Order 2: I ordered 7 or 8 games this time. Unfortunately when I received this order, some of the games were in really bad condition. The worst one was missing the plastic on the case and just had the insert taped to the case. Now that's horrible. The description said nothing about this and I was pissed. But I contacted discount games and they said just send them back for a refund. I was satisfied with just the offer of a refund and I was too busy to send them back so it ended there. But then...
Order 3: This time I ordered a mix of games and manuals. Not only were a few of the items in substandard condition again but they also sent one incorrect game! It's strange how their service gets progressively worse. I had ordered two of the same game purposefully and I guess they only had one in stock. I messaged them again, same old story, send the stuff back, rah rah rah BS. So I guess you're wondering why I ordered from them again, right?
Order 4: I guess I'm too nice! I was willing to give them yet another chance, which they managed to ineptly screw up again. So I order 3 manuals and a game. Should be a really easy order, right? Not for these morons. They sent the three manuals only and no game. Now I hate them.
In addition, while all of this was happening, a customer of mine asked me if I had ever ordered anything from discount games. I said I had and related the whole story of how much they suck. Not surprisingly, he said they had done the same thing to him, sending him one of the wrong games. Of course they told him the same thing, send the games back. Difference is, he lives in Canada and it was an even bigger hassle for him. That was recently so I don't know if he eventually got what he ordered or not.
Wow, I feel much better. Discount games rots.

I don't understand why you continued to purchase from them if you were not really satisfied with them. I could possibly see buying something once more after your first unsatisfied purchase (to see if it was a fluke) but twice?
Two unhappy transactions should be a sign to take your $$ elsewhere.

250 people have left negatives or neutrals this month alone. While 17,000 have left positives, 250 people still got taken. I guess if you know your percentages you know how many people you can screw and still maintain acceptable feedback. That doesn't make sense on my order though because the things I got ripped off on were not expensive.

You're very right. The only reason I made the last order was because they had one of the last two Genesis games I need to have them all. And that was the game that was missing from my order.

I won five seperate auctions from them for five, new and sealed, Game Gear games. They sent me one sealed and the other four looses and used. I thought I got screwed, but I did the whole return with form thing.
They did end up sending me back the correct sealed games, but failed to refund my return shipping (as there form claimed). I think I learned my lesson.

DiscountGames? Are these the guys who send their manuals with yellow post-it notes stuck to them? I assume it is some sort of inventory or item number in their system. Honestly, I have ordered from them 4 times and haven't had a single problem. Sure, one or two manuals could stand to be in "better" shape but they are all intact with no missing pages or anything.

I think those jerks show up EVERY TIME I look for games. I actually bought Shenmue off of 'em a few years back, "complete", but it was missing its manual. They never offered a refund or anything.
It took me two years to find the manuals here at DP. Oy vey.

Heh, ironic you brought them up. I recently purchased three genesis manuals from them (Shadow Blasters, Shove It! and Taz Mania) and they are most certainly the ones that put sticky notes on their manuals. However, i recieved the Shadow Blasters and Shove It! manuals and Taz Mania THE GAME. I sure don't plan on bothering to contact them since i figure they lost some money in transaction anyhow.

I did BIN on a couple of their manuals the first week of this year. Paid through Paypal. Got one of them 2 weeks later. So I emailed asking them if they were sent out at different times as I got one but not the other.
Another week goes by and the other manual shows up. I went ahead and posted positive feedback on both items and call it a done deal.
Then the next week I get another copy of the missing manual I emailed about.
Then the following I get another copy of that same manual.
I'd be cautious of them at the very least. Seems they've got a right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing type thing going on there.

yea, i've got a few thing off them here and there, its always been minor problems, like stickers on the labels, or writing when it said nothing in the description. i have got everything i've bought but it usually takes about a month to get to me, i live in Canada, so i don't mind the extra shipping time, but a MONTH? c'mon

It sounds like they get mixed up a lot. With 17000+ transactions a month, they're probably not prepared to handle that kind of volume. And their prices are pretty high. So I'll stay away unless they have something I want enough to take a gamble on.

I don't think you're the only one who "lucked out." They have 99.4% positive feedback, which is actually quite good for a huge seller. I was expecting them to have sub-97% fb.
If they had anything resembling a decent price, I wouldn't have any concerns about buying from them. Especially with Paypal's buyer protection (which as a seller, I normally hate).

If you were referring to me as your Canadian customer, you kinda confused these geeks with another seller.
Until last week, I had not bought anything from discount games because they never have any pictures of their games. So I won't buy games from them unless it's in desperation. I did, however, buy three manuals. All the manuals had pictures of the actual manual with a post-it note with a number on it. In all my emails I mentioned these numbers. So we will see if they screw up or not.
The seller that sent the wrong game was Chunky Investments. I ordered Ecco The Dolphin and they sent Rocket Knight Adventures instead. I wrote them, and they said that I can return the game for a refund or for the game I wanted. I asked about paying the $5 for the game instead and having them send it, and they said that would also be good. So I did, and less than two weeks later my game was here, just as pictured.
So they screwed up, but they fixed it and were very helpful doing so.
Rockraverguy, who runs the Bargain Gaming Depot, had many auctions going. I bought several cheap games, and where he had more than one auction on the same game, I specified which auction it was I won. He sent two games from the wrong auctions - same games, but not in as good of condition as the ones I bought. He said to send them back and he'd send the correct ones. I just sent them back today so idon't know how it will turn out. Well, hopefully. Before receiving these games, I bought a few more. Hopefully all of these are correct.

No it wasn't you but I'm interested to see how your order turns out. Seems they like to sell things they don't have in stock and not send parts of orders. I wonder if it's a matter of course for them to try and leave things out of people's orders, knowing only a certain percentage will return items and/or leave negative feedback.

I just recently joined DP. I'm more active on the Atariage forum, but I saw this thread and had to reply. I bought an instruction manual for NES Crystal Mines from discountgames on 2/25/07 BIN and payed right away. Ok, so this is the first time buying from them. I always see their auctions and won't buy a cart because I know they use stock photos but I figure a manual no big deal. After waiting 23 days and 3 emails later, with no response, item still not received. I posted a thread on the above mentioned forum and got a few bad/ok stories about discountgames. This is a seller that just dosen't care. I will never buy from them again. I opened a dispute with Paypal today about this item. Its true they have alot of positive feedback but they have alot of negs, and more that don't get put up out of fear I'm sure.

While I am still waiting for my stuff from Discount Games, I received my other set of games from Rockraverguy (Bargain Gaming Depot). Again, one of the games was wrong. I had bought Tiny Toon Adventures for the Genesis. The copy I bought was in excellent condition in the picture and made sure that I specified that I wanted the copy pictured, as the auction says that is the one I will get.
Well, that wasn't the one I got. The one I got had a rental label on the cart and the manual was in piss-poor condition. I emailed him stating my greivance, and that had I known they would have come so quickly, I would have waited to send the other two back. (Incidentally, he mailed my first set of games TWO WEEKS after I won them). Anyhow, he said he would refund me for the game and to just keep it. Of course, I will have to buy a real copy of the game, but at least he works at correcting his errors. Once I get the refund, I will still leave positive feedback stating that the games was wrong, but the refund was right :).
Anyhow, purchase with caution.

Alrighty, so my 3 manuals from Discount Games came in. I'm suprised it was so quick, and they were the exact ones in the pictures. Wow.
But wait: there's more. Their pictures aren't that detailed, so I didn't see the line of gunk stuck to the cover of one manual when I looked at it. I had to check it again and look real close to see the stuck gunk. Without seeing the manual, you wouldn't be able to tell anything was amiss.
Anyhow, the order was right, but the quality of the manuals wasn't that great. I don't think I will be a repeat customer unless I am desperate.

Even though Discount Games has a fairly positive feedback, the amount of negatives they receive isn't worth it. If you'll notice, a lot of the negs are for not receiving the games at all. This is an excerpt from a typical auction:
"Why Choose DISCOUNTGAMES? Because WE GUARANTEE OUR GAMES TO WORK AND ARRIVE - Or Your Money Back!!!!"
Well, I hope that if my games don't arrive I'll get my money back. Why is "guaranteeing" games to arrive so special? Sure, they have mostly positive feedback, but nearly 200 negatives this month and tons of neutrals don't speak highly. I'd say avoid.

I do business with them every once and a while and they have always delievered EXACTLY what they had described in their selling posts. The only time I had a problem with them (about Christmas time) was a bundle of Sega Genesis games and when the parcel arrived at my house all the games (CIB at that) arrived except one in particular. I emailed them and they immediately put the amount for the one game missing back on my credit card which I verified (3) days later.
I can understand the warning to others given here, but I gotta' stick up for a business that has proven to me to either deliever what they state they have, or make up for it as quickly as possible if they're in error.

I bought a CIB Competition Pro joystick for the NES from them a while ago and it never arrived...I just let it go, because I assumed it got lost in the mail (never had anything lost in the mail before, but I figured it could happen sooner or later). First purchase: 10 complete sms games.
3 weren't top condition and one was missing the instruction. I complained and received the instruction two weeks later so I was rather happy.
Second purchase: bought a cheap star trek academy (32x) which wasn't released in europe. Then thought "maybe I can buy a couple of others to save on shipping, in case someday I start the us collection ?"
Received my 10 games, was pretty much disappointed: two missing instructions (once again, they sent them) but moreover, poor package making most of the game tatty and star trek's box (the game for which I bought the stuff) was totally destroyed !
I know I won't buy anything else from them unless they have some really rare cheap stuff (saw they sold a complete copy of mah-jong for the master system for a ridiculous price last month)

Discount Games can be fine at times, but you have to realize they are another quantity not quality seller. I bought 9 NES games off of them and they came fine and in good condition. However, I bought a few months later (Castlevania II&III, A Boy and His Blob, Elevator Action, and Skate or Die) and Castlevania III came with 90% of the cart covered in sharpie (just scribbling) and the labels on the others looked like somebody spilled coke on them and everything was sticky. A real mess in other words. Needless to say they refunded the money for the games and I haven't been back. The only other company that has given me trouble is DK Oldies from time to time.

Yeah, I bought a copy of River City Ransom from dkoldies a while ago, and received it with Sharpie all over it. They have a 100% guarantee, so I exchanged it for another copy, and this one had part of the cartridge melted. I'm not a fan of them to say the least. The auction listing said the game was in "excellent condition".

Hello everyone, just thought I'd chime in real quick. No, we are not the same company as Discount Games. We have been around much longer than they have, and can assure you that are service is far superior. We do not do 17,000 transactions a month and have more time to dedicate to individual customers.
Yes, we do on occasion use stock photos but can assure you that are descriptions are accurate. When we make mistakes we try to fix them immediately. Also, Dark Sol, please e-mail us with the e-mail records, item number and or approximate date of the auction, or any other information you might have on that Beyond Oasis auction. Although I am personally unaware of this incident, I would like to clear this up with you as soon as possible. This is a terrible thing to happen to any customer.
Any questions, feel free to PM me, cheers.

I just noticed this thread and even though it's about a month old I'm gonna bump it has I also had problems with Discount Games before.
I bought about a dozen games from Discount Games back in the spring of this year, it was all common/fairly common games for the NES & Genesis that are all worth about $2 each roughly that I haven't been able to find in the wild over the last few years. I was hoping for the best but wasen't surprised to get the package to have something wrong with it as I could tell what I was getting into with a seller with way too many items for sale along with the amount of negatives they would get each month. 2 of the games I ordered were missing so I e-mailed them probably 4-5 times over a month giving them more time then they deserved to fix the problem with them only once getting a reply back to me saying "we'll get those sent right out" which they never bothered to do. I paid less then $2 per a game and only ended up losing about a buck since they screwed up the discount shipping in favor of me by about $2 :) Another thing worth mentioning about my experience with them was that they say buy 5 game get them shipped for $10 and it's even a little better per a game the more you buy over that but I felt like they were trying to avoid honoring that if they could with me as it never showed up with combined shipping for me in the checkout and I had to message them and ask them for the combined shipping rate :( I waited till the last day possible day to leave them a negative feedback hoping they wouldn't be able to retaliate with a negative feedback with the usual call us at *********** (which is long distance) we'll fix your problems! which I noticed they did to just about everyone that neg'd them. It must have worked too as they didn't negative me :D
I also ordered before once from DKoldies and they sent me 1 wrong game (Thunderbirds instead of Thunder & Lightning) out of about 12-15 games but with them I sent back Thunderbirds and got Thunder & Lightning in a reasonable amount of time although they ignored the idea from me of refunding the return shipping seeing as it was a mistake on their part. I just didn't leave them feedback because of this as I didn't think leaveing neutral or negative feedback was worth the trouble on $1.50 to risk getting one back at me. Some of the games I got were pretty rough. I had to go over afew of the NES games a couple of times with q-tips and an eraser before they would even play, the one game actually looked to me as if somebody took a sharpie marker and colored the games contacts lol
With both Discount Games & DKoldies I planned on only buying from each of them once and never again (for all of the obvious reasons) but tried to buy all of the games that they had from my wanted list that I could get cheapest from them compared to elsewhere on eBay.
Some of the things about these sellers I expected like the condition of games being bad at times with no pictures and vague descriptions at best about anything cosmetic. Also I wasen't surprised to have very dirty contacts on certain games as if they just came out of somebody's basement or attic after being stored for 10+ years as it's pretty obvious that they don't test or clean anything with all of the games they must get and sell.
The two games Discount games forgot were Phantom Fighters for the NES (which I'm actually better without) and Insector-X boxed for the Genesis which I ended up lucking out and finding at a yardsale for about .25 in a genesis lot which made paying about $2 for what was probably going to be a ratty cart only copy look fairly expensive :D

I must be of the very few who have had a good experience with them. But yeah, when I sold my broken nes with a lot of games, one of their branches bought it from me. Those games were in bad shape cosmetically, but could be cleaned easily, and I think they will be sold just as such. So beware.

One thing that amazes me about DG, is the fact that when I'm about to sell something on Ebay, I will look up the item via completed auctions, to get an idea on what it's going for, and typically the highest a game sold for, is an auction from discount games. For example, there will be a Super Nintendo RPG, and they will have sold a loose copy for like $24.99 as a BIN, yet I will see some other auctions that have the same game complete for like $9.99, yet this guy somehow sold it for almost 3 times the price and a loose cart at that. It always amazes me whenever I see that.
Oh well, I guess "Tho shall not playa hate".

I see the same thing all of the time (but not typically as bad as seeling loose for $25, while others are complete for around $10). Some newer buyers ain't as wise I'm sure and think more feedback = safer to buy from which wouldn't be the case with a seller like Discount Games but buyers thinking like this may be willing to pay $20 BIN for something they could easily find as a BIN from another seller for say $12-15 at any given time. Also most of these games that sell BIN for well over the average are probably from eBay stores so they probably sat on the Bay for alot longer then 1-10 days before selling I would think. I know I have the same problem with seeing stuff selling for more then my BIN listing (sometimes with me seeing BINs for more then mine selling everyday) I've even seen some of my BIN listings go as the cheapest BIN not to get a bite.

First of, they are a large seller and cannot keep tabs on everything. They always offered you refunds, and thus weren't in the wrong. If you had bad experiences, then I don't feel bad for you since you went back four times. Your your own worst enemy, and thus you need to grow up. If you don't like there service then ask for them to give you a positive feedback, and leave them a negative. Honestly, this post is pointless and needs to be closed immediately. EVERYONE, has a bad ebay experience.

I recently bought Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic and Knuckles, and a variety of NES games from DG. My biggest complaint about them is how dirty their games, especially Sonic and Knuckles.
I spent the entire day getting all the dirt and grime out and in the end, got all but one game to play right. On top of that, the label for one of the NES game was nearly torn and mangled that I barely recognized it.
Luckily, it was my first and (hopefully) last time I'll do business with them. Better off going to a respectable retro store. I had bought a few rare systems from Joe's and never had a problem with any one of them.

Are we a Discount Games shill? Yes we are!
I don't think it's your place to call for other people's threads to be closed, especially 1 year old threads. One of the reasons this forum in particular to exist is for people to rant about their bad experiences, praise their good experiences, and discuss what's going on in auctionland.
If the mods closed every thread with a (supposedly) baseless rant then there wouldn't be much of a forum. As it is its GOOD to have people's experiences out here in the open where they can be discussed.

Yes, awfully emotional for such an old post; 20ish posts and your calling for a thread to be closed? Very demanding.
I have had mostly good experiences with discountgames myself. I know I have bought dozens of games from them (usually a bunch at a time).
There have been issues. I think I got a couple sports titles that didn't match the description, but they were resolved one way or another to my satisfaction.
While I am happy with my dealings, my dealings also made nebrazca78's issues believable, and worth reporting in this forum...
I would not tell anyone to avoid discountgames just to be aware that they make mistakes because of their volume.

As a forum member I'm allowed to call things as I see fit. You never see people going on here to rant about "positive" encounters they've had with ebay members correct? And to be honest this specific thread was created to state "don't buy from this person, even though I continually bought from him several times after a bad experience." I don't know about you, but if I go somewhere and am mistreated, I will never go there again (and probably will tell others of my experience). I think your being a it sensitive, to something that doesn't require sensativity.

Oh Noes!! Discount games is empty!!

Where will we get our overpriced games that show up a month after ordering, if at all????
By the way, if you happen to get one of their pages that shows a live auction, if you click on it, it says its now invalid

I think I've been really fortunate. I ordered from them a couple of NES, Genesis, and GameBoy manuals and everything turned out ok.
To think, I was planning on doing another order...now I am not too sure...

The one time I ordered a game, it never showed up, they ignored my emails, and even ignored the paypal claim! Paypal gave my money back, but realized it wasn't a place I wanted to deal with again.

First it was RedFrog then Discount Games, now it seems DKOldies is throwing the towel too.
I'm all for teaching the substandard merchants a lesson in quality over quantity, but what the hell is going on with Ebay? They're acting like the apocalypse is coming.

Yeah it is. Unfortunately, they're no longer doing business on ebay. I wish they were still around they had a ton of sealed turbo grafx games I still wanted to get my hands on.

Red Frog is not TZD. They bought what remained of TZD's stock a while back and then jacked up all the prices.
