A small background of the game is on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maelstrom_(computer_game)
From the screen shots it looks like a MAC game I once played at a friends house. I don't remember much about it though, but anyone recall it? It's said on there to be one of the first big games on the system. The reason I am so currious about it is because I stumbled across about 8 sealed copies at a store today and needed to know if it's even worth anything. There's no copies on eBay and haven't heard of it in years. Any insight would be awesome.

It's was published by the king of Mac shareware, Ambrosia Software.
BTW, if you have a Mac with Mac OS Classic and before, you can still purchase the game through download on their website.

$15, wow that's a lot higher than at the store. I'd be more inclined to buy it if my Apple had classic either installed or running in the background. It came formatted and I purchased OS-X 10.1 upgrade with the 10.0 install disc since the G3 on supports up to there. So, I've yet to come across v.7-9 in the wild.

If I'm thinking of the right game it's similar to the Dreamcast game Armada. Isn't it kind of Asteroids like?

From the screen-shots and discriptions I'd say yes. Once again though, I really do feel as though I've played this game at some point in time, but just can't remember clearly.

Basically, every game Ambrosia released for the Mac in the mid-to-late '90s was incredible. I've always been a console gamer as opposed to a computer gamer, but whenever they'd put out a new game, I'd jump right on it. Escape Velocity, Swoop, all of those were way ahead of their time, and back then, that was as good as shareware Mac gaming got.
I haven't used a Mac in years, but apparently they're still releasing games. I definitely recommend picking up at least their older titles.

Apeiron is their great take on Centipede.
That's their specialty: take classic arcade games and do their own take on it, instead of just porting it to the Mac. Their Wiretap Pro utility is really good too (allows you to record and save any audio file on the computer, including streaming audio). I also own their Snapz Pro utility, which has come in handy for making screenshots or capture video (Mac OSX's Capture utility won't make screencaps of commercial DVDs).
BTW, if you don't wanna dish out for their games, you can still download a demo.

Isn't that the one where the Centipede is chilling atop a mushroom taking a hit from a bong?

Yup. Well, not in the actual game (it is after all centipede) but the cover is definitely inspired by Alice in Wonderland.
