I am seriously considering axing PayPal. I've known for years they are a joke for handling disputes, but within the past year I've had a couple first-hand experiences that have really left me reeling and hating them for their lack of common sense.
For those that have already dumped PayPal, I'm interested in hearing how you're faring without them. Or if you never did use PayPal to begin with on eBay, I'd also like to hear how your sales are.
With PayPal, I've been able to sell quite a bit more to international customers since they don't have to wait for the payment to arrive here. And they usually are willing to bid more on items than U.S. customers. I'd say they make up about 20-25% of my total sales. I'm pretty sure that without PayPal, I'd also be abandoning the 90% of eBayers that rely and use PayPal, a good chunk of the customers so that is why I'm sort of hesitant.

I'm curious about this too. I've had BIG problems with them in the past and have only recently opened a new account because...well, I couldn't think of anything else to simplify my auctions. If I could live 100% paypal free, I'd love it.

I would think it would be difficult going without it. Personal, I have never had any major issues, but I do understand there is a problem with the system. What are you going to do though? Take checks or money orders? I did use bidpay for a while until they shut down and have not tried them since them coming back. Going back to money orders does not excite me though.

Just open a second checking account. Put on your more pricy auctions that international bidders must wait for an invoice before paying. Make them send it to tne 2nd checking account. Then pull the money out right away.
I take my chances on little items but always funnel the money away on high priced stuff, especially if the buyers history looks somewhat suspicious.

See you shouldn't have to do that. The problem is Paypal is NOT a bank and thus not held to the federal standards that banks are. Paypal can essentially do whatever they want. They're just a service provider, and can do whatever.

So the question remains; what are the viable alternatives to Paypal? Considering the almost-monopoly that paypal has on the auction and private sales transaction market, is it possible to continue to do the business that we do without them?

It doesn't matter what the alternatives are. Ebay won't let you advertise that you accept other online payment methods, ESPECIALLY Google Checkout. They realize these other services are superior, so they ban them. They do have a short list of allowed non-PP alternatives, but they are all very obscure and very pathetic.
It's not just an unenforced rule, either. I had about 50 auctions pulled two months ago because of it. Sadly, I've gone back to just saying I accept check, MO, PP.

There is no valid basis for eBay not accepting Google Checkout amongst other formidable online payment methods, despite their claims otherwise. eBay states that there are certain factors they consider when looking at which to allow, but it is extremely obvious they are attempting to control a monopoly with PayPal and eBay. Allowing a few less-than-mediocre online payment methods covers their asses to make it look like they are not controlling a monopoly.
I still REALLY would like to hear from those sellers that are making do without eBay. Have your sales prices dipped significantly? Significantly less sales?
